There was a similar situation just a few weeks ago in Fort Worth at Van Cliburn's funeral. President George W. Bush & Mrs. Bush, Gov. & Mrs. Perry, & several Russian dignataries attended the services at Broadway Baptist Church. Cliburn had made many significant contributions to the church & I know that many members did not get to attend. My friend sings in the choir & it was a major chore just to get into the church to participate.

And you didn't stop by to meet a WS'er in Waco???? LOL, just kidding!

:seeya: Yay! As another poster said ( upstream ^^^^) we need to keep supporting West as they rebuild and recover. I'd say I'm going to just have to gain a few pounds as a sacrifice for having to stop and buy kolaches every time I drive through West. (Sounds like a PERFECT excuse, eh????)

I haven't been able to really follow the news in the last 24 hours, crazy here. I did watch about 15 minutes of their Town Hall meeting last night on TV - going over volunteer manpower, and their official "plan" on rebuilding will be turned in (to ??? I don't know, maybe a City Council?) on Friday. They were going through very mundane, but simple and critical issues such as "how do I pick up my car that's parked by my house so I can at least have my own car" to the water issues. I did hear they said they have over 100,000 bottles of water. The lady speaking mentioned laundry supplies - yep, a temporary place where locals can go do their laundry. The little things in life we take for granted. She also mentioned that there were over 500 meals available for every breakfast, lunch and dinner at one of the sites. She said no one should have to make a meal if they don't want to, for several weeks. Sounds like they have great resources in place.

Here in Waco, getting ready for tomorrow, it's nuts. We're having to use hotel rooms in Temple (about 30 min south of Waco) for staff and manpower, as Waco is sold out. Many locals are upset that the POTUS visit has negatively hurt the accommodations for traveling Fire Dept's coming in, families of West (maybe they'll be going to hotels in Hillsboro?), and even one charitable organization was having a hard time donating/hosting rooms for the FD honor guards ...
<snipped for space>

:seeya:

I waved at you as we drove thru Waco, DD! We'd have stopped by with our kolaches and coffee but they were all gone by then. ;D

Drove down to Austin this morning, and as we headed back we got clogged in traffic on I-35 going thru West. Big fire truck with lights flashing by the school with the 'thank you' on the fence, and CBS news truck and camera crew taping south of Czech Stop. We were worried so checked Twitter - I believe firefighter Captain Harris' funeral had been going on. (In the process of checking Twitter, discovered fugitive Tobias Summers was apprehended and brought back to CA today, for those following that case.)

The famous Czech Stop...the kolaches are as good as the people's hearts in West, TX.

Also found this good news for the people of West:

NEW: The Czech Republic government is sending $200K in aid donation to town of #WestTX. FYI, big Czech heritage in West - @edlavaCNN

I'm not trying to be obnoxious, but I refuse to let this thread die.

14 people died in this explosion, hundreds injured. People are still not allowed in their homes. Water may not be restored for weeks.

Folks, this is a bad situation still!

I gave blood last week.

I am sooooooooooooooo sorry for what happened in Boston, but really? This wasn't a terrorist, which seems to be the only thing that gets any national attention.

14 people have been killed. Mostly first responders! Hundreds injured!

Ugh... I'm just venting, because these people, and this community seem to be forgotten, until tomorrow when the POTUS comes. And then to just cause more distress to the very victims, and loved ones. A photo op!

I only say this per the media, because us TEXANS will will never forget them!

We will continue for the weeks and months to come, to help them.

DD is awesome, and I wish her and Mr. DD the best in a bad situation!

:blowkiss: Sorry y'all, It just irritates me to no end...

:rantofff:

OSHA: Last West Fertilizer Plant Inspection Was in 1985

Posted: Apr 24, 2013 1:16 PM CDT Updated: Apr 24, 2013 5:44 PM CDT

(KCEN) -- According to a statement released to OSHA, the last inspection at the West Chemical & Fertilizer Co. was in February 1985.

OSHA has been working with investigators and officials to determine the cause of the fire since the blast.

A spokesperson for OSHA said, "On the evening of April 17th, at approximately 7:50 p.m. CDT, an explosion occurred at West Chemical & Fertilizer Co., a company with nine employees in West, Texas. OSHA responded and has been working jointly with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Chemical Safety Board to try to determine the cause of the explosion, if any violations of health and safety standards occurred, and lessons learned. OSHA also deployed a compliance assistance team on-site during the recovery period to make sure the people entering the accident scene are properly protected and trained on safety and health issues."
