No one had to "order" us (Texans) to lower our flags to half staff....they've been at half staff all over the state since just hours, maybe even minutes after this tragedy occurred!

We are "Texas" and we take care of our own! My heart has been so very blessed to see the outpouring of support for West...all of Texas is loving on West!

Oh, well-said, momtective! ;D

I'm behind on this issue trying to keep up with Boston suspects. Was it determined if the fire was intentionally set or accidental?

No determination on the cause of the fire has been made, no.

DD - I have a question for you.
When you are running background checks for people to meet the president... what are you guys looking for?
Will anything disqualify someone? Or just a violent crime?
With the other presidents who've been killed, did the person have any criminal history?

Does that mean that the people are hand picked to be near Obama at disasters... like tornadoes?
I would imagine many people in that situation may not even have their identification.
Do those people have to have background checks before being near Obama?

I know with GW... with the disasters it seemed much too spontaneous to be that structured.
Is this just for memorial type things? So weird to think about... I had never really thought about it.

This picture is from right after the explosion. (There is a better one, but you get the idea.)

I thought that night "I bet those were flags were down because of Boston..."

What timing!

Mr DD just got off work, and was calling to check to see what plans we had for tonight, as he said they didn't have anyone scheduled to cover at the mortuary tonight...we have NOTHING more important, so he and one of his coworkers have signed up for tonight's 6pm - midnight shift at the mortuary.

Then I saw this post of yours.

In general, the background checks are for those who will be in close proximity of a protectee, or working in critical areas, or on/with certain equipment.

Examples: airport mtce/ramp crews at airports, volunteer motorcade drivers (not staff, but oftentimes there are more 'dignitary visitors' participating and they need drivers - and I've learned over the years it's usually coordinated by the political party in that area), etc.

For yesterday, names had to be run for the speakers on the stage (ok, except for the Gov and Senators, LOL...I mean the fire association representatives, chaplain, etc), some Baylor staff, and then the family members and fire association coordinators that were meeting in a room afterwards. In addition, normally there are photo ops set up in advance (a set number on each departure), and those people have to have had their backgrounds checked. That is different than any unscheduled photo op.

Disqualifying info is normally due to violent crimes and/or threats. We don't care about DUI's (well, except in case of a motorcade driver!), most drug use, misdemeanors, even old felonies, etc. It really takes a lot to get someone disqualified, but we need to check just to be sure. Yesterday's one that I needed higher up approval for was because he had a conviction for Prohibited Weapons, an Agg Assault with serious bodily injury (probation had expired), and he was currently on Parole for a Burglary of a Habitation. He was allowed in, but the staff there had him flagged and knew who he was.

Interesting!!

You know, I watched the memorial from start to finish & there were so very many emotional moments. However, the thing that touched me most was the video portion recorded by family members. To participate, in that way, required a tremendous amount of strength, love, & courage. I can hardly imagine how difficult that must have been for them. No doubt in my mind that the people of West are a hardy group who will someday recover from this tragedy. West, you showed the world your determination to carry on.

I agree. I wonder what day they taped those. I give them so much credit, I don't know that I could have. What a tribute to those men. I do enjoy hearing and seeing about their real lives that they led.

I know absolutely that I could not have done it (crying is my specialty). Maybe that's why I respect them so much.

Not sure if these have been posted already, but saw these photos on Twitter today and thought they were quite moving.

People lined up for the Memorial outside Baylor Thursday.

Firefighters carrying the hats of their fallen comrades.

Caskets of first responders lined up at memorial service.

It is the fire dept rituals that always get me. Carrying the hats, final call and the whole ritual.

What bothers me the most is in my state this story was barely covered. I had a thought and I hope I'm wrong, did someone steal a bunch of this fertilizer from this warehouse and then start the fire so no one could figure out how much is missing? Maybe they didn't realize the impact of the ammonia nitrate mixed with the other chemicals, and fire acting as a detonator. Or maybe they wanted to see how powerful the explosion would be.

At this point no one knows, but it is being investigated. Everyone is examining that crater. And by everyone I mean from different areas. The ATF, the agricultural area, the state and the feds.

My guess is that it is probably accidental. That along with an alleged lack of safety measures is what caused so much much damage.

In a case like this, I'm always glad when ATF & other federal agencies get involved. They have many resources plus the money to investigate that no local or state could hope to to have. I have faith they will find the cause.
