GUILTY TX - Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger, indicted for Murder of Botham Shem Jean #7

She doesn't have to talk about the ills of a community if she chooses not to do so. She spoke about what was in her heart and her experience. There was a cover up, there was an interview that was stopped, there was a recording that was stopped, no-blood draw for hours, there was a smear campaign of her child (announcing he had trace marijuana in his system on the day of his funeral), there were political people who refused to act based on votes lost, and more. She spoke about what she experienced as a citizen of St. Lucia who had to bury her innocent son. She had enough to question and make comment on. IMO.
I was trying to compliment the woman...for heaven's sake. She could make a huge difference. <modsnip>

I am really glad this is over. Thanks to all of you for your insight and thoughtful conversations these past couple weeks. Good night everyone.

It has been a long year. I think that this was an amazing outcome. I am waiting for the Hallmark movie.

I am glad AG was sentenced to murder, that was appropriate. I was surprised by the sentence, because I thought that the jury would really be emotionally involved with the case. They did a great job, and did show mercy to AG.

What? Check out the 0:15 mark in the video. A sheriff deputy is comforting Guyger and stroking her hair after the verdict was read! What a weird trial.

I don't get the hype. It's a human comforting another. And thank God for that officer, because no one even so much as touched her shoulder before Botham's brother.

She was sentenced to 10 years. This is from a district court judge speaking on WFAA: she will be eligible for parole in 5 years, however parole on the 1st try rarely happens. More likely she will serve 75-80% of her time, so 7-1/2 to 8 years.
Thanks. Still better than the minimum sentence of 5 years, which would be 3.75 to 4 years if paroled. Of course I was thinking the sentence would be 20 years, which would 15 to 16 years if paroled.

I was shocked at every turn in this case and I don’t think we will ever see anything like it again. I personally felt as though history was made. Botham’s brother taking the stand and everything after that, words can’t begin to describe! That kind-hearted young man spoke directly from his heart and I don’t think he understands the enormous impact he had. Not only on himself and his path to healing, but his family, Ms. Guyger and her family, and judging by the lack of dry eyes in the courtroom, MANY others! We could all learn a thing or two from him. He said it perfectly - it’s what Botham would have wanted. If Botham was anything like is brother, I believe he is absolutely right!

Seeing him plead with the Judge, who had trouble answering through her own tears, to allow him to step down and give Amber a hug and then watching her almost run into his open arms...the most moving act I’ve seen in a courtroom! I respect the Judge also for addressing Botham’s family and Amber face to face the way she did. People forget this is real life and real people’s lives have forever changed and that little bit of compassion and respect (even towards a convicted murderer) may likely be the exact thing each of them needed to begin the next step of their long journeys!

None of this was fair and I stand by opinion that absolute justice was never possible in this case. But I think the best possible outcome was reached. (JMOOs)

**this photo is reminiscent of the one taken of Devonte Hart crying in the arms of the officer several years ago. It’s worth a thousand words!

I am not a heavy sentence guy - but it is kind of amazing how poor people get massive sentences for run of the mill crimes whereas this perp who gunned down a man in cold blood gets 10 years

I really hope this makes LE think more carefully before shooting

I think it will, for those who are thinking before they shoot. Too many of them are untrained, scared and pumped up by online rhetoric.

This raw video(more of the deputy at the booking ) look toward the end, the deputy is brushing lint off another deputy’s shoulder.
Lol. Maybe it’s that deputy’s thing, grooming others.

This was an amazing experience for everyone. There is nothing wrong with a bible being given to someone. No matter what their personal beliefs are.

It seems like Judge Tammy was caught up in the emotional events. It was not "favoritism".

I am not talking about favoritism. I'm talking about the separation of church and state that was not respected by a judge, who is employed by the government. I don't care what the belief is here, I care that it happened and it's wildly inappropriate for her position.

I agree that in most states this would fall under manslaughter or second degree murder laws. Malice is usually required. But this is TX. The law is simply different. They don't require that. They followed the law.

Thank you. I honestly feel like most people who are unhappy with the 10 year sentence are forgetting this. In Texas there are no degrees of murder, it’s broad and that’s why the sentence range is so broad 5-life. I think they sentenced her closer to what she would’ve received with a lesser charge in other states. Just my opinion

It seems to be a military thing as well. My coworker is ex military, and always has his lint roller on his desk. He always wants to "roll" me.

Not hype, but surprising to see a court officer stroking her hair and all. Her lawyers doing that yes, but not the sheriff deputy. I remember the somewhat racist text that Guyger sent her married lover about black officers: "They have a different way of working and it shows." Now she should be thankful for their "different way of working."

I would like your source on this.
It has been on TV and in the newspaper. Evidently she had to decide and apply before the trial began. But, here is a source.

"If a defendant is found guilty, a punishment phase to determine the sentence occurs.

In Texas, the judge is the default choice to decide the sentence. However, a defendant has a right to have a jury decide the sentence." https://www.texasdefenselaw.com/library/trial-process-in-texas/
