Just spoke with a juror who said none of the jurors were adamant that Criner was innocent, but a handful had some things they needed to work through. He said bandanna and glasses were key.

I wonder if there will be any problems due to jury being 100% white. I can already see the appeal. This was a terrible crime. Now, at least one killer is in lockup.

Just spoke with one of the jurors—he said a key piece of evidence that helped them come to a decision was the gray and yellow backpack. @KVUE Prosecutors say we saw that backpack in the storage room, in the surveillance video, and again in dashcam video from the vacant building

Austin Police Detective Anthony Nelson spoke with Criner before arrest. Jury never saw video. Nelson tells me: "He is the most calculated and manipulative individual that I've ever met. Very well trained. Trained, I don't know how. Maybe it's natural. He is very good."

“Mental health has nothing to do with this, if it did you would have heard it from the judge in your charge,” Gonzales tells the jury

Well, I disagree with this, but then again I don't think anyone who rapes or murders has a healthy mind.

Family, attorneys respond to guilty verdict in Haruka Weiser case
"...The jury foreman said the jury took more than 10 hours to review the evidence because they wanted to make sure the state had proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“There was just way too many things that lined up to be coincidences,” the jury foreman said. “When you combine all of the elements together, to be a coincidence at that point, it just becomes so implausible, it's unbelievable."...

Ariel Payan, Criner’s lead defense attorney, said they would be appealing the verdict, but had no further comment."

I'm so relieved this killer was found guilty. He murdered a beautiful soul who would have had such a positive impact on the world. I'm thankful the right verdict was reached.

Meechiael Criner will not get a new trial in murder of UT student

Meechaiel Criner, 20, was found guilty in July of killing Haruka Weiser in 2016. His attorneys appealed, saying he should get a new trial.

The judge acknowledged that while the defense had found new evidence, the circumstantial evidence of Criner's guilt was "overwhelming." He said the new evidence would in "no way" affect the guilty verdict. He denied a motion for a new trial.
