HOUSTON, Texas (KBTX) - Houston police are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 24-year-old woman, last seen earlier this month, who has ties to Aggieland.

According to the Houston Police Department Missing Persons Unit, Sydney Marquez, 24, was last seen on Dec. 11, 2025, in the 9100 block of Bellaire Boulevard. Authorities say Marquez suffers from a mental illness, raising concerns for her safety.

Police describe Marquez as 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing approximately 120 pounds, with red hair and brown eyes. She is Hispanic. At the time she was last seen, Marquez was wearing a gray hoodie, beige shirt, gray pants, and white tennis shoes, according to a missing person bulletin.

Her former roommate, Kate Girvin, tells KBTX that Sydney graduated from Texas A&M in 2023.

Grizzy’s Hood News in Houston has been in touch with Sydney’s family and says she traveled from El Paso to Houston to meet a friend, but since disappeared. She reportedly left behind her phones, clothing, and makeup, and her vehicle was found abandoned in the Chinatown/Bellaire area of Houston.

Anyone with information about Marquez’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Houston Police Department at 713-884-3131 or the Houston Police Missing Persons Unit at 832-394-1840.

This article updates the info on the mental illness she was being treated for (but had not taken her prescribed meds for). Late onset bipolar, schizophrenia is the term her father used. Medically, I think he may be a bit mistaken on the terminology. Late onset for those conditions is normally after age 40 (and into the 50's for bipolar). . Experts consider late-onset schizophrenia to mean a diagnosis between the ages of 40 and 60, In her 20's it would NOT be considered "late onset" - most people are diagnosed with Schizophrenia in their late teens to early 30s.

Without her meds, the possible symptoms, hallucinations, thought and movement disorders are frightening.

Yes she is - adding to your hope for a safe recovery. My thoughts are with her family.

What's next:
Houston police continue to investigate.

What they're saying:
METRO gave FOX 26 this statement:

In the case of the missing person, Sydney Marquez, last seen by her family on route #46 the METRO Police Department (MPD) is actively cooperating with the Houston Police Department (HPD) by assisting with the retrieval of video footage from the METRO bus the individual was reported to be on. While the remote download of the requested footage was unavailable during the initial request, MPD is currently conducting a manual download of the requested footage to support HPD’s investigation. We remain hopeful for the safe location of the individual and will continue to assist HPD in any way possible as the investigation continues.

That body of water has me worried. I hope they're also checking any abandoned or unlocked vehicles.

Authorities say Marquez was last seen in the 9100 block of Bellaire Boulevard near Ranchester Road.........

KHOU 11 has obtained new surveillance video from the area. The footage shows Marquez walking northbound along the sidewalk on Ranchester. Tim Miller of Texas EquuSearch, who has been helping with the search, said the video does not show signs of distress.

“It didn’t look like she was in distress, like a normal walk, not running, not staggering, it certainly appeared to be a normal, normal walk,” Miller said.
Miller said search efforts in that immediate area have been exhausted, and teams are continuing to move forward.

“We’re back to square one and again it’s process of elimination, this area is now eliminated, so we have to keep moving forward,” he said.

Why isn't this getting the same attention as Camila Olmos? It's been since December 11th! I only found it by following Camila's case. I understand the media is sometimes reluctant when it is a minority, but Camila was as well. Because Sydney is older? I'm not sure there is enough information, but i'm thinking of reaching out to John Lordan on YouTube.

Her parents have yet to make contact with SM themselves. SM was found by a stranger who reported it to police. Police then released her. Her parents don't feel as though the situation has been resolved.

She's 24. If police suspected she was in danger (from others or herself), they would have responded a different way. After reading the posted article it's clear she doesn't want to be with her family. I suspect they're controlling and she's breaking free from that.

"Officers say Sydney asked to leave on her own free will, and she didn't want any help, so she was released.
Sydney's family says police should not have let her walk away. Sydney told police that she would reach out to her mother via email at a later time."

I'm interested why she abandoned her car, which was reportedly found still running with her phone and other belongings still inside.

Bipolar, schizophrenia. Nonsensical decisions.

Law Enforcement made contact with her and she identified herself... "I am 24 years old! I am not missing!".... no need for medical attention was found, so she was free to go.

I don't know who the family member is but there is insistence she has bipolar disorder.

Officers couldn't force her to stay with them.
