TX TX-Hunt, Overnight flooding at Camp Mystic, all girls camp. Unknown number of missing. July 4, 2025

‘A Texas official said the forecast provided by th¹1¹•°`$1e National Weather Service underestimated the amount of rain that lashed central Texas ¹before devastating flooding.’

Forecasts can underestimate or overestimate. Their job is to warn. They gave the flood warning. It is enough. The rest laid with the locals. 6,300 for four weeks per person. The camp owners could have done a better job when they got the warning about the flooding the day before.
I am not sure how the cost of the camp has anything to do with this heartbreaking event.
I answered above. JMO - the camp owners had the money to organize things better.

We are now more than 24 hours into this tragic event, and KPD, KFD, KCSO and other first responders from around Texas are continuing to conduct rescue and recovery operations along the Guadalupe River corridor.

As of 8:55am, we have evacuated over 850 uninjured people, 8 injured people, and have recovered 27 deceased. This includes 18 adults and 9 children. Six adults and 1 child are currently unidentified. We are unable to release any further information on the deceased at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and their loved ones. We are working hard to locate anyone who is still missing and ensure they are safe.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with you. It must be horrible job. I hope there is a FB detailing what the inhabitants of the area need now. I usually follow fire areas, but sometimes things or utensils can be mailed to local churches to distribute. There are lots of poor folks who lost their houses too.

At least two of the missing Camp Mystic girls — and possibly their camp director — were found dead during search and rescue operations following the devastating flooding in Texas as the death toll rose to 27, according to officials and local reports.

Renee Smajstrla, 8, and Janie Hunt, 9, were among as many as 27 campers who were washed away in the deadly Guadalupe River flash floods.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I am still looking for confirmation a flood warning was issued. A flood watch issued differs from flood warning. Watch means: be aware, it may happen. Flood warning -=flood is going to, or happening right now.

It is important
to avoid contact with flood water.

Wet food, even packed, should be thrown away.

It is not rainwater or water from the river that floods houses, buildings and streets.

This is often chemically and biologically contaminated slime mixed with sewage, oils or gasoline.

Contact with this liquid can be dangerous.
People need to use wellies and gloves.

There is a mind blowing video of the Guadalupe River at Center Point Bridge on 480. Hopefully one of the news outlets will pick it up so I can share the link.

Months' worth of rainfall fell within just a few hours in Texas' Hill Country on Friday, overwhelming riverfront communities and forcing emergency teams to evacuate children's summer camps threatened by rising water.

In central Kerr County, up to 10 inches of rain inundated the area overnight, causing the Guadalupe River to swell rapidly and overflow its banks, sparking widespread flash flooding.

Not that it matters what I think under the tragic circumstances, but it will be very hard to convince me it could not have been avoided. As soon as you see heavy rainfall, you do not keep people and esp kids anywhere near water.
I’m honestly shocked , and heartbroken for all those parents. IMO the Camp will close for good after this.

The National Weather Service had issued a flood watch for parts of south-central Texas, including Kerr County, on Thursday. It warned that a slow-moving system could potentially bring major storms to the area.

The rain that fell was even more intense.

At 2:03 a.m. the National Weather service issued its fifth warning of the evening, each of which had been more strident than the last.

This one said "This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW! Life threatening flash flooding of low water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses."

This article link seems to indicate the first warning to move to higher ground NOW was issued at 5:14 am. If that is correct, the camp managed to evacuate more than 700 people in a very short time. Still, not enough. Not enough.

Oh my heart is so heavy right now, I know you're all feeling the same. I know lessons need to be learnt from this, but gosh, whole families and many camp -kids are still missing right now. Then also people that evacuated but that have lost everything - insurance will state "act of God" - it's honestly a tragedy that happened.

I live in an area with a lot of creeks, rivers, & lakes. Every time it rains steadily, potential flooding warnings go out. These warnings are put out so often that I wonder how much (speaking generally) public apathy feeds into people not heeding warnings early enough?

This image (seen in a DM article but with an AP copyright mark on it) shows the terrifying scale of this tragedy, imo:

My heart is breaking at the thought of the dead child who hasn't been identified, and his/her family waiting somewhere hoping for good news.

Does anyone have a number on how many people are missing besides the campers?

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I can't stop thinking about the families and those poor girls. Is there any hope at this point? Do we know for sure if the cabins were swept away, or is it possible some of the girls were trying to evacuate themselves and got caught in the floodwaters that way? Just praying for a miracle.

I don’t think officials even know at this point. There are campgrounds all up and down the river. I’ve seen mentions of RV’s in the trees. So it wasn’t only the Summer Camps.

Some folks might not have even been reported missing yet. Though I guess they will have reservation lists to work from?

Until a person has witnessed or survived a flood, they will never understand the power or the dynamics.
