Feit’s conflicting 1960 statements reviewed during murder trial

"...McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez read Feit’s 1960 statements to investigators while on the stand Monday in Feit’s trial.
Feit was a 27-year-old priest on April 16, 1960, preparing to offer the sacrament of confession when Garza, a 25-year-old second-grade teacher and beauty queen knocked on the door.

Yet Feit, now 85, told investigators at the time conflicting versions of what transpired.

“I had never made the acquaintance of this person before,” Feit told investigators at the time, “and to the best of my knowledge I’d never seen her before.”

In that original statement to authorities, Feit said that he did not take her confession, and that another priest had been present in the rectory when Garza arrived. But on June 14, 1960, the young priest contradicted his earlier statement, claiming he was alone and that he had indeed taken her confession.

The last Feit saw of Garza she was standing on the sidewalk in front of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen, he told investigators. Her body was found in an irrigation canal five days later. She had been beaten, raped while unconscious and then asphyxiated.

“It makes his first statement an obvious lie,” Rodriguez said. “I believe it was deceitful.”.."

Explosive testimony by Dale Tacheny caps Day 3 of John Feit's murder trial. He claims that Feit confessed to the killing of Irene Garza while the two were at a Trappist monastery in 1963. #FeitTrial

John Feit Confessed to Murder, Former Priest Says

"EDINBURG, Texas (CN) — Three years after he killed her, John Feit admitted that he’d used a cellophane bag to murder a South Texas beauty queen in a bathtub, a former Catholic priest testified Monday on the third day of Feit’s murder trial.

Prosecutors say Feit had a penchant for attacking young women in high heels from behind while they prayed in church.

“I get anxious when I hear, ‘click, click, click, click,’ when I hear the heels on a hard concrete floor,” former Trappist monk Dale Tacheny testified that Feit told him in 1963..."

Here's my recap of day 3 — Ex-monk testifies that Feit confessed to killing a woman in South Texas in the early 1960s and police chief offers new insight into alleged cover-up by Catholic Church

dvIdySxC

Police chief, former monk testify about concealing evidence, confession

"EDINBURG — The Catholic Church actively worked to conceal evidence incriminating a former priest for the 1960 murder of a McAllen schoolteacher, witness testimony alleged on the third day of the John Feit murder trial...

An autopsy report found that the 25-year-old teacher had been beaten, raped while unconscious and asphyxiated. Investigators believe these events likely transpired in the church’s rectory.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez testified Monday that while investigators never recovered any physical evidence from the rectory, the police file on the decades-long cold case indicates that investigators had “testimonial evidence that property of hers … was found in the church and subsequently disposed of by members of the church.”

He did not specify what this property entailed, but noted that it was “articles of clothing.”..."

Doyle: If people knew priests were “running around committing crimes” the institution of the church (church officials) would lose authority

Erik De La Garza‏ @eidelagarza
1h1 hour ago

Former @dallasnews reporter Brooks Egerton told jurors of his 2004 story where Sacred Heart’s fmr priest Joseph O’Brian was interviewed and said John Feit confessed to the killing. “John, how can I help you if I don’t know the truth?"

Egerton said the line of questioning “almost provoked a fist fight” between O’Brien and Feit in the 1960s. #FeitTrial

Thomas Patrick Doyle, an inactive priest who worked with sexual abuse victims in the Catholic Church, is next up on the stand. He has just been qualified as an expert witness permitted to testify. The jury is about to walk back into court. #FeitTrial

“This is a 57-year-old case. I think the one question that’s on everybody’s mind is ‘What took so long.’” Prosecutor Garza says Doyle will shed light on why the case has never been prosecuted until now. #FeitTrial

Doyle says it was common for prosecutors to make agreements with the Catholic Church in criminal cases. “The Church would take care of it and priests were not prosecuted,” according to Doyle. #FeitTrial

Doyle says worshippers are “more vulnerable” during confession. Prosecutors have said that John Feit attacked Irene Garza while she was giving confession on Holy Saturday 1960. #FeitTrial

“I’d consider it a punishment,” Doyle says of the Trappist monastery John Feit was sent to after Irene Garza’s murder. You pray, sleep and do manual labor, he said. #FeitTrial

Doyle talking about New Mexico’s Servants of the Paraclete, a religious order that house troubled priests. Feit was sent there but eventually became a superior in charge of making decisions on when troubles priests would be returned to duty. #FeitTrial
