I know LE is saying that the grandfather's arrest was not connected to Jake's death, but I wonder if they're saying that because they have no positive proof yet that it is. Just seems like too much coincidence that he would be arrested so quickly after the child's body was found.
I'm not sure whether the 8 or 9 y.o. is making up what he saw or not. One snippet of the local news said it was the mom who told searchers to look in the septic tank. Why would that have occurred to her. People don't usually leave the lids off their septic tanks because of the smell. No 2 y.o. could open that heavy lid, and it was said they had to call in a septic company to open it up, but that could have been for security reasons, IDK.
Many years ago, I lived in Winona for a brief time, but I haven't been to the town itself in a long, long time. It is very small, used to be smaller than that before they put in all the liquor stores. Maybe I need to drive up there and check out the scenery. I'm about 45 minutes southwest of there.

I know women can drop off babies up to a certain age, varying state-to-state, but what about older children? Just wondering if there is safeguard in place for people who know they don't want the child, but the child is past the age limit. Can they "turn them in" legally somehow?

It is called legal adoption. That means you don't sell your baby or child and you don't just drop them off somewhere. You do everything according to the law and you ask nothing in return.

Legal adoption means that although you are unable to give your child the patience, support, guidance and stability he or she needs, you love that child enough to do what is best for them, no matter what anyone else thinks of you. Their life is too important to base your decision on what others might think of you!

BBM. If I remember correctly (its been a while since I lived in a place without city utilities) the actual lid to the tank is about 4-5 feet in diameter and made of cement. There is an access hole that would be about 10 inches wide that the septic company can use to check the levels of the tank and to add chemicals if needed. Its usually just a pvc lid with a couple of smaller openings on it. The company was called out im sure to remove the large cement lid, which would require a tractor to safely remove it.

IMO, if there is way to donate directly to the funeral home, well, it may be a better choice. There is way too much that folks don't know right now. Little guy does need a lovely place to lay, and a lovely service, too, but unless the rest of the money is going to the other children...

I'd be willing to bet that we find out he was autistic. A family that has so many children, probably living in poverty from what we've read, probably couldn't deal with it. My son is 12 with Aspergers and the early years were horrific. It's no excuse. But I'm as certain as an outsider can be that his 'condition' definitely played a part in it. Poor little guy.

Completely agree. My son has ASD, too. He's almost 5. As soon as I read the first few posts on the topic, my ASD-dar was pinging... LOUDLY.

I think that aspect of this case makes me more mad x 10000000 than I already would be naturally about any other similar case.

I'm in Cali, maybe it's different in Texas. Our septic tank is a concrete vault and is buried three foot in the ground. It does have a pump port (roughly 8" in diameter) which allows the septic company to evac it, but there is no way you are going to get the lid off that thing without without a sling and a backhoe or tractor.

Are septic tanks in Texas normally level with the surface?

I guess maybe this is more in line with what it would have looked like. But why in the world would they have it exposed/open and with the clean out lids off? Ya'd think the odor would be atrocious :what:, let alone a safety hazard with children around. I'll never understand how people sink to the depths we see here at WS. You don't have to be rich to have a sense of pride in your surroundings and instill that in your children. Old and run down can still be neat and clean. Personally, I like old houses and homesteads, I think they have character.

Knox, that picture helps a lot. I can't imagine a toddler being able to take those cleaning caps off. The odor would be awful, too, I agree. My boys got into a lot of dirty stuff when they were two, but an open septic tank? Yeesh. Not all toddlers are the same, though. I still can't see how he could have just "fallen" into that hole.

We have a septic tank, but I believe it's round. Could be mistaken, because it's been almost 30 years since it was put in, and I wasn't here when it was. The lid is level with the ground, but it's probably 5 feet across. I have a big wooden wishing well sitting on top to kind of hide it. But you are right, it would take a backhoe to get the lid off it. Maybe 10 strong men could budge it a little, IDK. Nobody is going to leave the lid off one, though.
I would really like to know how long that little boy had been missing, and when the last time someone besides the parents and siblings saw him. The news stated that the father was at work when the missing report came in. Also, I've heard 3 other children, and 5 other children, I have no idea which is right. Jake had a twin, not even sure if the twin was a boy or girl.
What a nightmare. Maybe we will hear more details about this next week, but it's strange how the different channels report different things. Ugh!

The foster parents where the other children were placed will be getting help from the state. I would bet they are not all in the same home, but it's possible. I would donate towards funeral expenses, but not to the family directly until I know more. I'm not cold-hearted but I don't want the money going to buy drugs or alcohol. Maybe a cleaning service and exterminator to get that house in shape, or to move somewhere else in case they ever get their other kids back. I feel so sorry for the other children, they must be so confused and frightened.

I would guess that gma really can't say much else. Maybe she wasn't there. But if she knew the details, LE would not allow her to speak out right now, I don't think. Just a guess, but until they know how he died, they are not going to release the facts until they have confirmation from the ME. Not even to the family, probably.
I wish we could know more, but it's just wait and see for now.

If you do a search on Gregg county jails site, you can find out some of the dads criminal history. If you dig deep enough you can find the moms familys history also. Seems mom is the only one that had a clean record.
