This has been discussed extensively on previous threads. HS/College Kids use a lot of chat apps that don't register with cell towers. The tower information is easy to get and they can get it within hours - every detective knows how. The chap apps are internet based and harder to access.

Cell tower information for phone location tracking is now obtained only by search warrant, decided on June 22, 2018, by the Supreme Court (Carpenter vs US) with huge implications for digital privacy. Prior to this decision, the info was easily obtained by what the court deemed an overreach of a court order. I don't know about the chat apps you are referring to but Carpenter vs US is worth a read. Unless the phone data showed he was planning to meet someone out there (I feel this is doubtful) or that someone had been after him (I don't think this was the case either) I don't think it will lead to where he is.

Anything on that phone happened prior to the car accident which, unless he wasn't in it, I'm pretty sure wasn't planned. MOO

I'm kinda thinking he was meeting up w/someone. Small time dope deals are frequent using WhatsApp and SnapChat. I'm wrong more than right but I think the answer is in his phone.

You could be right.

I wonder though, if he was, and that is why he was there on that road, why was the (dope) left behind?

That's a tad wide is it not?

Also, this could possibly explain why he had chosen such a tough passcode for his phone. MOO is that the last person to have seen JL was someone he met up with to buy illegal drugs from before he eventually wandered down SFR and straight into into a tree, only to vanish without a trace. . .

RSBM

IMO I don’t think he necessarily chose a “tough passcode”. For example, my iPhone requires a scan of my face or a 6 digit code to gain access. I’m not hiding anything (other than desiring the basic privacy of not everyone being able to get into my phone and info), it’s a basic feature of the device. But without JL, you can’t do biometrics for facial id and there are about 1 million possible combos for a 6 digit code making it tough. LE have resources, but there are legal limits on what they can do and not every department has the budget for the necessary people or equipment. That makes it possible, but time consuming.

I also believe his phone will be of no help in finding him. I think he either dozed off at the wheel or became confused in some way for whatever reason and had the wreck and now is just waiting to be found...:(

When I just re-read his father's last statement, I was surprised to read that his father had been a trial attorney before becoming a pastor. I wonder if this has been a help to the investigation.

I doubt it, hopefully it acts as a deterrent to the trolls and media spreading fake news as fact .

Someone posted a few pages back about the security light on the northernmost vacant house. I drove by there last night and that light does work, but it is fairly dim. Not something he would have been able to see from the accident site (because of trees, etc.), but if he walked south he would see it fairly quickly.

How far south would he have needed to walk in order to see it did you notice? Would he have encountered any major obstacles while attempting to access it in complete darkness, possibly quite seriously injured as well?

I'm guessing it's less than 1/4 mile from the accident site. The search HQ was 900 feet south of the accident site and I'm guessing that the house is another 500 feet further south. No major obstacles I've seen. The house sits very close to the road.

Thank you @Luling
Okay, so he stumbled along, I think we can say with certainty he was in deep shock because that invariably accompanies car accidents.
possibly physically injured too..
it's starting to catch up on him after 900 feet or yards..
he's feeling shook up... possibly his body is feeling overheated at this stage too- common in a head injury if that is what happened, sets bag down.. heads off towards the light..
Could he have gone off road at this stage or is there another reason his tracks disappeared at this stage?
Putting disappearing tracks aside, he arrives at light.. sees it's not an occupied residence..
looks around from there, possibly for another light..
What would have been visible to him from first light area?
he's possibly not thinking straight, just knows he needs to get help..?

Not much visible from that house. He might be able to see some gas flares in the oil fields, but that's about it. There are some very steep creek beds all throughout that area (Plum Creek). The area was very dry until recently and there have been a couple of heavy rains. I keep wondering if they should walk the creek bed again to see if the faster running water may have pushed him somewhere downstream if he originally went/fell into the creek.

Thanks.
I think it's worth another look too.

This is what I'm wondering: Has there been any mention of LE trying to access data from JL's cell phone or bank account? The last information I read stated his phone, wallet, etc. was initially returned to his family.

Sadly, now that a month has passed and no sight of JL, IMOO he is deceased.
It would be a miracle if he was not. Sadly, I think he is probably not far from the accident site. So sad.

Thanks for confirming the light is there and it wasn't the reflection of the media camera.

That house is interesting. I suppose the property owner is paying an extra monthly fee to the electric company for that particular security light to stay on. Why bother, if no one lives there? The house is old, but the property still looks somewhat maintained (unlike the other house).

Just want to make sure we are talking about the same security light... is it the one behind the house?

Yeah, I'm not sure. I've never seen any evidence of someone living there. If they were using it as a deer camp I'm sure I would have seen them there during the season. Could be an elderly person that passed and the house is just sitting there vacant...can't imagine the electric bill is much at all for that light...maybe they keep it on just to discourage vandalism.
