I would be curious to know what type of gaming JL was involved in and if it involved racing, iRacing, etc.
I would also be interested to know if he had an interest in the hugely popular street racing.
I would not rule out "Drifting" by the driver of the wrecked car. Here's a demo and explanation of "drifting"

My guess is he was speeding. That's my personal opinion. I say this because I saw on one of his social media sites where he liked a post about speeding around. Doubting there was much traffic out there at that hour so I wouldn't exactly be going the speed limit myself.

I'm speaking more of the "Drifting" stunt that is enormously popular among kids his age and has resulted in numerous fatality accidents

Speaking of reckless driving and stunts. I'm aware of a young man (I did not know him- mid 20's) just last week was messing around in his car in a empty parking lot, lost control and rammed into a building. He freaked and left without calling LE. Of course video caught the whole thing, witnesses nearby saw/heard it. Everyone was looking for him, he never returned home that night. He was found on his families large property yesterday with his truck running, he committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. He rigged his exhaust. Everyone is devastated and shocked. Yes, he would have been in trouble, but he would have got past it. He had his whole life ahead of him. IMO

Doesn't the act of drifting require speed? Sure looks like fun! I suppose he could have potentially taken that gravel side road to drift for a bit before continuing on his trip. I would think there'd be evidence of that on a gravel road. I wonder just how much investigating (looking at) the road investigators do? Do they just look at the crash scene, and not much further down the road? Things that make you go hmmmmm...

I reckon they looked at all of it and very closely too, there were several highly competent teams in on this.

That’s awful. :(

Some teens “drifted” right up into my neighbor’s yard a couple of years ago. Lots of landscaping damage.

If he was drifting for sure it would show on regular road or gravel. It is a very hard brake ..you jam on the hand brake so the wheels lock. You leave rubber marks on regular road. I live rural people play on the roads alot. You do not need to go very fast to loose it on a gravel road. Just hit a pothole ..it is like driving on marbles or ice. If he was carrying drugs could of just taken back road so as not to run into police. Moo

What would be the fun of drifting all by yourself in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere? Wouldn't you want a friend to be in on it with you?

Except that back road was going away from I10 instead of toward it. He was definitely not taking that road as a back way—it was the complete wrong way.

Not me. I could have fun all by myself doing this. IF I was to do it. I'm too chicken to do something like this but it does sound like fun!

I think the fact that the backpack was left in the And IMO probably impairment since he was so far off course and as we know some sort of drugs were left behind in backpack. I don’t think he would have left any of those things if he were okay

Self harm is still on my list b/c the wreck at least appeared survivable and I can think of a lot of pressures he could have been facing. It’s a tough age.
RSBM. The thought that keeps coming to me about the backpack being found with “narcotics” still inside of it throws me.

If I was not badly injured, or so impaired that I was not thinking clearly, I would’ve definitely taken the “narcotics” out of my bag and left them elsewhere. Maybe hidden, to be retrieved later, or just to keep myself not associated with them because you would know in one way or another LE would be involved at some point with an accident.

Of course this all means someone not concussed or worse, and not chemically impaired to begin with.

A little OT, but there’s been discussions on weed being described as a narcotic. I do know that if you seek self help for addiction to marijuana, the 12 step program for that is Narcotics Anonymous which I thought was crazy.

That is crazy. Isn’t weed not even addictive? At least physically—I guess anything can be psychologically addictive.

I personally was psychologically addicted to weed after smoking daily for 25 years. I tried the 12 step route to stop (many years ago) and I was directed to Narcotics Anonymous as I was not about to go to rehab. Long story short I just quit on my own 17 years ago (quit drinking the same day) and never even thought about taking up either again. Sorry for OT just my personal experience

Sorry for quoting my own post but I wanted to add... if you take being concussed/injured out of the equation and are thinking maybe JL was under the influence of something so he wouldn’t have thought about distancing himself from the “narcotics” - from many years of personal experience (sadly) I could’ve have been heavily under the influence but if there was a chance that I’d have to deal with LE, I would have totally had the presence of mind to get rid of the “evidence”. You get sober in a hurry when you’re worried about being arrested.
Just wanted to clarify my statement and of course all only my personal experience!!! MOO

I agree! He either was so so injured he wasn’t thinking about taking his things (including the drugs) or he knew he wasn’t coming back. MOO

This ^
I don't think he'd be doing this alone and in the middle of the night. Seems more something that would be done in daylight and with others to challenge and show off with.

I'm inclined to say they didn't do much. The broken pieces of tail lights and broken off car pieces were left at the scene by the tree. I have a hard time imagining that they went overboard doing an investigation at the scene.

In drifting you do not break. You go into a turn under power and reverse your wheels opposite of the turn. It is hugely popular with young kids and has resulted in numerous serious and fatality accidents. It is part of the street racing scene.
