The more I review old news articles from when the disappearance took place, and see how many persons of interest there were, and how many people the PD questioned and investigated, I'm beginning to change my mind about how FWPD handled the case.
Did they mess up in the beginning by looking at it as a runaway case. ABSOLUTELY.
BUT, I'm also seeing information that both Rachel's mother and TT, both initially said they thought Rachel wrote the letter. Also statements from people that claim to have seen the police report that say Rachel's mother falsely told police that she knew TT was at work because she was there with him.
Information like that leads me to think that more than a couple of folks weren't honest and forthcoming with the PD. And if that is the case, the police with taken down the wrong path from the get go.
Now of course PD should have looked at the fact that there were two minors with Rachel. And of course if they thought that Rachel ran away and took two minors with her, they should have charged her and viewed Renee and Julie as her kidnap victims. That didn't happen. But jumping to just a short period of time after the disappearance, everything I've seen reported tells me that the PD did work this case from top to bottom.
Jump to now. What I see now is someone very close to the case that is virtually ignoring any information that doesn't fit with their tunnel vision. I'm seeing VERY good and important information being handed to them and ZERO indication of that information is even acknowledged, much less being forwarded to the PD. I see someone that says they THEMSELF have excluded persons of interest and known serial killers. NOT the PD. Just that person on their own. Even to the point of that person going into an abandoned home where a convicted serial rapist (who was a good friend of Rachel's father, per a member of the family) had lived and searched and removed a bag containing human teeth that were found inside the house. That is NOT how a criminal investigation works. At least not if you want results. And never if you want ANY kind of relationship with the actually PD that are charged with working the case!
I guess my bottom line (jmo) is that yes, FWPD botched the investigation in the beginning. But I'm seeing reasons why that may have happened. And as for now? I just see someone with blinders on and whether they realize it or not, are working AGAINST what should be the ultimate goal.
