TX - J'Zyra Thompson, 19 mos, burned in oven by 3yo siblings, Houston, Nov 2015

Ovens have safety brackets that are supposed to be installed to the floor. The base of the oven then has a metal slip thing that slides into the installed bracket to prevent tipping over. I assume that tipping ovens must not be that uncommon for this safety feature to have been invented.

"Mr. Malone stated that when they returned and went into the apartment, he could 'smell something burning,'" according to a probable cause affidavit.

Thompson and Malone told police they found the three other children crying and pointing to the kitchen. In the kitchen, the oven had tipped over, with the oven's door face down on the floor, with J'zyra apparently inside, according to the affidavit.

Malone "stated he uprighted the 'range' and the next thing he noticed was J'zyra was lying on the floor. He stated that she was obviously burned and deceased," according to the affidavit. The oven had apparently been turned on "all the way."

My 6 yr old grand daughter cant lift her 2 yr old sister nor reach the oven knobs on the back of the stove.. I'm not buying this.

What knobs in the back of the stove? None of the ovens I had had any knobs in the back. I know children that age who can easily turn the knobs on the stove.

Why can't I find any articles where it said the parents had to pick up a prescription? There was an article that said that, right?

Most free standing ranges have knobs on the back plate of the stove where you turn them to designate the heat of the burners and the oven temperature. Slide in ranges have the knobs in front, but I think free standing ovens are more popular in apartments (they are less expensive).

It's mentioned in several articles, eg

J’Zyra’s mom, Racquel Thompson, left her four kids – all under the age of 5 – home alone while she and a boyfriend got food at Domino's Pizza and filled a prescription at Walgreens, police said.

HPD investigating death of 1-year-old girl, says child was burned | abc13.com (November 17, 2015)

The grandmother who lives in the complex says she doesn't know why the couple didn't tell anyone the kids were home alone. She says she was home and would have gladly gone over to the other apartment and watched the children if her son and girlfriend wanted to go out.

Other neighbors say it's not the first time they've seen the kids without adult supervision.

"She leaves her kids by themselves all the time, when she goes to work," said Miranda O'Neill Johnson.

I'm not buying that. When something like this happen, suddenly everyone would have been available to babysit.

All the print articles say the mom left to take the BF to work, but the video there says something completely different. It says SHE was at work, and when HE came home, he found the oven knocked over.

This story is horrendous. I don't think the 3 year olds did it. 3 year olds don't knock ovens over.
Whoa.....haven't heard this before. Three year olds playing with oven.....sure, maybe. Knocking it over.... No way!!!

Ontario Mom at post 34(?) gave Oct 2010 link describing oven tip-overs.
Not personally saying that in this case the kids were solely responsible, IDK. Per link it is possible.

Key findings in Consumer Product Safety Commission study:
"There were 1,600 injuries in 2006 from appliance tip-overs; most of the victims were children under 5.There were 13 deaths from 2000 to 2006; most victims were children under 10 or adults over 70.
The ranges associated with tip-over fatalities and injuries are freestanding or slide-in stoves with oven doors that swing downward.
How do these accidents happen? Children pull open a stove door and climb on top of it, causing the range to tip over. Older adults lean on a stove door for support, causing the range to tip over.
Heat from the range makes injuries worse.
None of the ranges involved in tip-overs were secured to the wall, floor or cabinets." bbm

What I don't understand is why they're only charged with abandoning a child under the age of 15. There are 4 counts, but still...Remember how Marjorie Knoller is doing 18 to life because her dogs killed someone? Seems like Jyzira's mother should be charged with at least manslaughter even though she didn't personally commit a murder.
