Teen, 18, fatally stabbed 'by 16-year-old girl during fight after arguing on social media' | Daily Mail Online

A Texas teenager was fatally stabbed by another teen girl, reportedly after weeks of feuding on social media.

Authorities said Kaitlin Leonor Castilleja, 18, of San Antonio, Texas, was fatally stabbed Friday at about 1am after she and Vivian Foster, 18, confronted a 16-year-old high school student outside the teen's home, according to My San Antonio.

Police said that while the three teens were fighting, the 16-year-old stabbed Castilleja and Foster.

Castilleja was said to have been mortally wounded by the unnamed teen, while Foster received superficial cuts.

Police said that after the attack, the 16-year-old called authorities to report that she had been assaulted in her driveway when she returned home from work and noted that Castilleja and Foster had been sending her social media messages 'stating they want to fight her.'

Marie Fernandez told WCVB that Castilleja 'isn't able to give you her side of the story, but it's been ongoing bullying on both sides,' adding that: 'There's so many factors that have contributed to this, and at the end of the day, whether it was wrong, in all aspects my niece had no intentions of hurting anyone.'

Fernandez told the San Antonio Express-News that Castilleja and the 16-year-old were supposedly fighting over Castilleja’s ex-boyfriend and said that her niece was 'lured' to the house and 'had no chance.'

Fernandez said that the attack was videotaped and asked 'What kind of person does that?'

The 16-year-old is being detained until her hearing, which is expected to be next week. San Antonio Police are continuing to investigate the incident as a homicide, according to KENS 5.

Is it just me, or is there a significant discrepancy between the way this incident is being portrayed by the victim’s family members (some of whom say she was “lured” to the spot where she was murdered) and the way it’s being written about in MSM (which say the victim and an accomplice went to the perpetrator’s house specifically to “confront” her about a matter related to the perp’s relationship with the victim’s ex-boyfriend?

And though I am absolutely NOT blaming the victim, I am wondering if Texas has “stand your ground” laws similar to those in other states and, if so, whether they would be a potential defense for the alleged murderer (assuming she’s able to prove that she feared for her life due to the victim’s arrival)?

A Madison High School junior who's accused of stabbing two other teens, killing one, was ordered to remain in juvenile custody following a brief detention hearing on Monday.

The teen is accused of stabbing Kaitlyn Castelleja, 18, to death early Friday morning in the driveway of the home of the 16-year-old girl now facing murder charges.

The suspect claimed that the victim and another 18-year-old girl came to her home and confronted her over a series of ongoing social media exchanges that included threats.

Jarrett ordered that the teen remain in custody until her next detention hearing, which she set for March 18.

Texas does have an SYG law. The Texas variant, however, directly states that the person citing the law cannot have:

- Been engaged in any illegal activity at the time of the incident.
- Provoked the other party.

The article states that the stabbing occurred as the result of an on going social media feud. If the attacker provoked the other party through inflammatory social media messages, or has the article mentioned "mutual bullying", she cannot use the Texas SYG defense law- even if the other two made a decision to confront her.

In addition, subjectively, speaking, Texas prosecutors and juries seem to be willing to hold people to a strict interpretation of the "cannot provoke" provision of the law when defining what constitutes as a provocation.

For example, a Texas man who confronted another about urinating in public- then chocked him to death after he was struck had his SYG claim rejected as he initiated the confrontation (provoked the other party). So was the SYG claim of another Texas man who challenged several party goers to a confrontation, then opened fire.

In short.... my strong guess is that if the attacker challenged, taunted, insulted the other party- even mildly, a SYG claim is going to get rejected. Then factor in the strong possibility that any such occurances of the above were probably not mild.

Girls in San Antonio’s fatal teen fight participated in social media’s aggression culture

March 11, 2019

"In the weeks leading up to the March 1 fight that ended with a 16-year-old high school student accused of fatally stabbing Kaitlin Castilleja, 18, videos of Castilleja and the younger girl in separate scuffles appeared on social media.

The videos collected dozens of “likes” and generated obscenity-laced spinoff arguments about who won and who fought fair.

Teens who might once have scrapped in front of 10 or 15 people for respect or credibility are now doing it in full view of hundreds on the internet for the same reasons, experts on teen psychology and digital behavior said. On camera or in writing, some are publicizing and escalating conflicts for social rewards from the exponentially wider audience that social media bring...."
