Houston Police Department officials said Gaona and three friends were walking north that afternoon in the 6500 block of Ashcroft in far southwest Houston. They were approached by what was then a newer-model black sport utility vehicle. Someone inside the SUV began to verbally harass Gaona and his friends, police said. When Gaona did not respond, the person in the vehicle began to fire at the group. Gaona was shot and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police said Chad Bujano was 16 when he shot and killed another teen on a West Houston street in broad daylight. The incident happened in 1995. Since then, neighbors said Bujano was more suburban soccer dad than accused killer.

Police said from the beginning Bujano was their suspect, but after the shooting he fled to Mexico to avoid arrest. Cold case detectives learned Bujano was back in Houston. That's when he was arrested and charged with murder...

Bujano is married and a father of four just blending in to suburban life. "He seemed mild-mannered," said Greg Damon. "He seemed pretty confident. He loved his family."

The charges were dropped back in May.

Prosecutors dropped charges Wednesday against a man accused of shooting and killing a teen more than 20 years ago.

Prosecutors dismissed the charges against Bujano because they believe the evidence on him would not have proven their case.
