Imagining in my mind's eye how this would have happened, I would say the child wasn't supervised at all.

What H-E-B in Houston has an escalator?
Edit: the article says a store in the Bellaire area

Not necessarily. I saw a toddler almost get strangled by their long woolen scarf getting caught in the escalator. Mom tried to get it off him but the teeth of the escalator was pulling it so tight as they reached bottom---luckily an employee with scissors was able to cut him free.

Her little fingers got wedged, but it does seem like she had to be reaching down---maybe she dropped something or saw something she tried to pick up? But I can't really fault a parent for that kind of sudden thing.

According to the lawsuit, the 3-year-old was shopping with her parents at the store when her right hand became trapped by a "dangerously" wide gap between the escalator steps and the skirt. Her hand became wedged, resulting in the amputation of her fingers.

Crump, who has focused on cases such as Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and George Floyd, said the escalator's safety features should have stopped the machinery but failed.
