I am getting the impression that maybe the daughters DNA was entered into Ancestry (or whatever, ie not a criminal or LE system) and the "hit" has been made with someone, possibly a sibling or cousin who innocently sent their DNA in like posters above have. That would lead the researchers to contact that family and they've worked out who FLEK is from that. Maybe?

Could you imagine submitting your DNA, then finding out you have a connection to something like this, but no idea how (without every other family member also submitting their DNA)? Family reunions would become a Logic game!

That would work. I watch the Louisiana Public Television show where famous people's roots are traced. It can be traced all the way back to Mayflower days and way beyond. Maybe this IS a reverse trace and someone was found through ancestors.

You know I didn't put all that together! I just found it by googling!

It is still very well done and very well put together in a great format from beginning to end!

Could happen to you in a few weeks, HerStory!

I imagine whoever had voluntarily submitted their DNA would be told of the match, and told of the approximate DoB of Lori. It shouldn't be too hard from there to work out who the mother might have been, even if the person had never been told about Lori or whatever her name was then. I'm figuring because there doesn't seem to be anything "official" out there on Codis, and that these DNA researchers aren't LE, that this might be how it's been worked out.

Before tonight I didn't know there even was such a thing as being able to submit your own DNA for genealogy purposes. Will look it up tomorrow.

I'm really torn on how much to believe this. I think on one hand if it came from DA that's a pretty good source. However, could he have misspoke on the name? It's not like he is actively researching, and basically what we have is someone heard from DA who heard from someone else. That definitely could have some elements of the telephone game in it. But, I could see the Ruff's wanting to know more, even if they are quietly pursuing it. And I could see them submitting something on ancestry.com, getting a result, but needing help on actually pinpointing who FLEK was within the realm of the family hits, hence DA knowing someone who worked on sorting it out. Soooo all that just to say I don't know what to make of it all.

Haha I was about to say "thank you"!

Yes I thought it was a useful summary at face value, pretty thorough from what I know about this case, which aint much compared to some of you!

I want to add to Cagney's observation (thank you Merlot wine!)..... "Her family came from Pennsylvania." does not mean SHE came from Pennsylvania. That is just where the DNA association tracked her to. She could be from ANYWHERE, but the DNA link likely traces to PA.

Ok this may seem random but I promise I am thinking about something here, is a tooth cap the same as a crown?

I would assume so, a 'crown' likely implies a metal. Caps can be made of anything nowadays (including amalgamate).

Which is why I'm willing to believe her identity has been discovered but not ready to believe it will be revealed.

I'm lost again. Is DA the name of aperson or is the person providing the information a D.A. (District attourney)?

  • #912
If it has been matched in Ancestry's process #1, would it not have to be verified in CODIS' process #2? Thus prolonging the reveal? Sorry about the Merlot infusion tonight (rough week).

DA is a third party's initials.

Locally, anyway, a crown is on a back/molar/grinding tooth while a cap is on a front/shearing tooth. FLEK may have had caps applied, and eliminated the gap in her smile.

Your mileage may vary....

I have posted a few times in the past, but I am guilty of quite a bit of lurking :) I usually just check in here every few days, but I was on my work computer today and not logged in. Quite honestly, I have not been able to stop checking in since this last bit of "big news".

I believe the show you are referring to is "Finding your Roots". There was a fascinating episode recently where LL Cool J's ancestry was compiled and it was found that his mother's parents were not her biological parents. Using Ancestry.com, they were able to find his mother's biological siblings using DNA (I think the parents were no longer living, if I remember correctly). Also, I believe the person they were originally in contact with, was a more distant relative (a cousin, maybe?), so it likely took a little while to get in touch with the actual siblings, so maybe that is why there has been/will be a delay in any type of official identification.

IMO, I don't think FLEK is Cheryl, just judging by the photos, but I am fairly new around here and certainly no expert :).

Did anyone check out Canada's missing people? Velling seemed to think Lori might have been from there. I had a quick look but it's nowhere near as easy to organise as Namus, unless I'm missing something obvious?

I wondered this at first (because I'm Canadian) but...the thing about Canada... it had a population of 26.9 million in 1988. The States had a population of 244.5 million. California alone had a population of more than two million more people than Canada in 1988.

I'm not great at math, but.. I think it's just so much more likely she's from somewhere in the States.
Heck, it's more likely she's from any one (populous) state or any three (less populous) states than that she's from Canada.

I totally agree it shouldn't be discounted, but it's just so much more likely she's an American.. If she was Canadian and wanted to disappear she could move from Toronto to Vancouver or Calgary to Montreal. Or whatever. Maybe not. But that's been my feeling.

Looks like the Wikipedia page has been updated.... though not with a source or a name.

Thanks I have had the luck of never needing any dental work and when I googled it it all came back about crowns. I have always thought she resembled Susan Williams from CA to a great degree. Susan has little info out there and I assume all her info came from her license for the most part. Her height is listed as 5'7" and it mentions double pierced ears and a tooth cap. But I feel like so many of the areas and the timeline add up so well. Probably wishful thinking on my behalf. But I have attached two poorly done overlays and the original images for consideration. Also I just renewed my license and it was the first time I have gone in in 12 years and noticed my height was still listed as 4'11", which I am now 5'1" so just some food for thought(persuasion?) on the height.

ETA: she also used an alias/nickname which kind of piqued my interest.

If she was Susan Williams she would have been about 55 though when pregnant right?
