Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn has been missing since Dec. 27 – but she is not the only person still missing in the Big Country.

Another Big Country resident, 87-year-old Loy Cosby, has been missing for almost 13 years.

Early on the morning of June 2, 1998, Nolan County authorities were called out to Lake Sweetwater for the report of missing Cosby.

His wife got up around 6 a.m. that day to find he had left the house. Cosby suffered from dementia. He was last seen just north of the lake dam and recreational area.

Dozens of volunteers came out to look for Cosby, handing out flyers and helping anyway possible. Hundreds of tips were called in.

Nolan County Sheriff David Warren was chief deputy in 1998 and worked the Cosby case.

"It's just so disturbing to know that somebody may have gotten into a car and made it halfway across the country and something happened to him or something. We just don't know," Warren said.

Warren said he's never forgotten the Cosby case. Nolan County sent Cosby's DNA to the Texas Department of Public Safety's Missing Persons Database. In 2005 they resubmitted material as the system was updated. Still, no matches.

  • Medical Conditions Cosby was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease several months prior to his disappearance and suffers from short-term memory loss and confusion as a result of his condition. He walks with a slight limp due to gout in his left foot.

<<Cosby was employed as a shipyard worker in California for many years before returning to his hometown of Sweetwater in the 1980s. His relatives canvassed the area near the shipyard after his disappearance, hoping to locate evidence as to his fate. The business has since ceased operations.

Investigators believe that Cosby may have received a ride from a passing motorist who did not realize he was a missing person. He may have attempted to travel to the west coast.

Cosby's wife said that her husband complained of discomfort due to gout in his left foot during the day prior to his disappearance. The pain did not affect his walking abilities. Cosby is described as an independent person. He developed dementia after suffering a stroke in 1997.

All of his immediate family who lived in the area at the time of his 1998 disappearance have either died or moved away in the years since then. Cosby's case remains unsolved.>>
