GUILTY TX - Maliyah 'Tootie' Bass, 2, Houston, 22 Aug 2020 *arrests* #2

I thought it said he told detectives that the mother beat the child with a hairbrush and then "they" put her in the closet, naked. He is charged with not doing anything to help Maliyah, and both for failing to seek medical attention.

Not that I wouldn't believe he's more involved than what he says, but where did it say he also beat her with the hairbrush?
Doesn't say he beat her with the hairbrush.
Says he beat her with a "blunt object"
which was not specified.
Which raises questions but I find no more details.

This is ridiculous and makes no sense. Why would this poor excuse of a mother stop allowing her child's father, who actually cared, to contact the child? Why? I don't see that dude wanting to be a daddy to someone else's child despite of the whole "I teached her the ABC's and the 1 2 3's" story. Did he tell her to stop talking to Maliyah's father and that's why she stopped letting him contact their daughter, or did she just really want her new boyfriend to be her dad?
And then, they don't even bother showing up to her funeral? I mean, not even the mother? She was scared to be pressed about what happened. These people are trash. I feel terrible for Maliyah's dad.

My guess is the child was being abused/neglected or something was happening that triggered her being killed once bio dad wanted to see her again.

I also think the boyfriend is being truthful about the hairbrush being the weapon used. Could easily see marks made from a brush appearing "loop like" if held right.

JMO, but I doubt the biological father's genuine care for the child meant much to her.
The reason could be resentment toward an ex boyfriend, or perhaps she got assistance checks having a child in the home.

A more sinister reason? MOO SPECULATION
I'm aware children of all ages get abused. But---and this may be my perception only--- it seems that one murder after another concerns a particular age group.
I mean 2 to 3 years, toddlers.
Is it because at that age they need as much as an infant, but can move around, ask or insist for things, can't just be dumped in a crib?
I actually suspect that is also the age they can tell on you.
Just think, all parents get worn out by toddlers but they don't kill them.
But most parents aren't living like the parents who have something to hide.
(I know Casey Anthony was acquitted. No comment.)
Some little ones reach the age they can tell Grandma you don't feed them or you sell drugs or you steal or you put them in a cupboard when lots of men come over.
Toddlers can be exhausting. Maybe for some people the child became a liability.

According to the article, court documents allege that "Ervin" struck her with a blunt object. The ME said the marks are consistent with an electrical cord or a hanger.

I still can't find where it says Thompson admitted to hitting her himself. He claimed that she beat Maliyah with a hairbrush. He is charged with failing to protect Maliyah from her mother and they are both charged with failing to seek medical attention.

After hearing some of the ridiculous lies Thompson has told I'm not sure anything he says can be believed. Hitting a child with a hairbrush may sound more acceptable to him than beating a child all over her body with an electric cord or a wire hanger.

I would think a hairbrush would leave distinctive bruising. From what the ME said it sounded like the marks were a more circular pattern without bruising in the middle. They were described as looped. Imo

It may be that we don't have access to source of accusation, but if news reported it they may have seen the entire arrest report, have heard it from LE or DA?

It only said he hit her with blunt object, not he admitted to doing it.

We have to remember these preliminary charges are almost certain to change when the ME finishes report.
The autopsy still not complete, and there is no mention of murder or manslaughter charged but they have been saying she was killed by the couple. So they got enough to lock them up at least thank God, but the full details may be far more specific.

I haven't read any news article that reported Thompson as hitting her with a blunt object. The one you linked specifically said Ervin struck her with a blunt object. If he is charged with failing to protect Maliyah from her mother, than it follows that she is the one who beat her with the object, while he did nothing to stop it. Then they both put her in the closet and hid her body in the storm drain, although I suspect she was already dead when they put her in the closet.

Boyfriend of mother of Maliyah Bass caught on camera with trash can
This article states that the boyfriend told LE that the childs mother beat her with a hairbrush because she wouldn't sleep and was crying, she then placed her in a broom closet naked and left her. They woke up the next morning and she was dead. I'm guessing it was at that time the boyfriend put her in a trash can and carried her to the storm drain near the apartment and dumped her body in then they called the police and reported her missing. I don't know if I fully believe his version of events though, the autopsy showed a broken arm and that she had a pattern of injuries all over her body consistent with an extension cord or wire hanger. I would think the pattern from a hairbrush would be distinctly different. Also, why was she put in a broom closet naked? I think there was more to it than that and maybe he's just trying to take the path he thinks will get him the least amount of charges when in reality I feel they should both be held equally accountable no matter who did what. Of course this is all just my opinion. MOO

Prosecutors: Video shows man charged in Maliyah Bass case dumping trash bag into storm drain

Video shows Thompson taking garbage bag to a bin near storm drain, then dumping bin down storm drain that leads to bayou.

Although we dont know all the details, we were told Maliyah was face down naked in bayou.
She was put naked in closet on last night of her life.
I wonder if the other items were disposed elsewhere: her clothing, extension cords or hangers, pillowcase/bedsheets etc.?
Or were they in the trash bag also?
Maliyah was spotted from the road by a jogger, who reported a child in bayou. I doubt they would have called 911 over seeing a trash bag in the bayou. So, is there possibility they had the storm drains searched? Some items might have got snagged and stuck in drain pipes.
Maybe the rest disposed elsewhere... I hope the dumpster by that convenience store had the pickup date tracked to landfill.

Thanks again crush. As usual I get 'access denied' to this link. So I appreciate you letting me know the information contained in the article.

Only a little bit I have to add to your thoughts... I think it's highly unlikely anything placed in a bag would remain in the bag very long once in water. The two items would quickly become separated once the bag was in water.

I don't know whether an extension cord or hanger were involved, those were the shape of marks on her body that the ME said seemed consistent, I think a hairbrush could make the same marks but maybe didn't come to mind for the ME. I have seen several cases where the ME says 'marks consistent with an item such as......', and when a weapon is found, they say 'yes, this could also explain those marks'. I don't see any reason for boyfiend to say a brush in preference to a cord or hanger. It's no better/worse.

Pillowcase, toys and clothes are still a relevant and mysterious aspect of the story I think. I have no idea how, but maybe will come to light as the sickening story unfolds.

God bless you sweet, innocent, trusting Maliyah :(

I rechecked it you are absolutely correct! I don't know why I confused him and her but my apologies!

There's a typo "boyfiend" that I actually like as a new descriptive phrase.
And Thompson had a girlfiend.

I agree that there's much more to the story. Whatever part each played in Maliyah's murder strengthens my suspicions that neither really cared about this poor darling.

IMO Thompson's interest in her came from something other than love and a desire to nurture. He chose to let Maliyah suffer and not call for medical help. He threw her battered little body away like yesterday's trash. Repeating what I said before, I believe his interest was to make Maliyah see him as more important than her own bio dad. I believe it was about control and possession and not a lick of love.

IMO Sahara appeared to take some interest in Maliyah until early this year. On her FB pics and posts of Maliyah stopped around mid-January. Maybe Maliyah was away at the time with grandmother or bio dad - which makes me wonder how long she had been living with mom and Thompson.

But Sahara's persistent search for victim funds makes me think her main interest these days is cash - maybe for drugs? MOO. And it seems the rest of the people in Maliyah's life are looking for a little spending money too - at least three online fundraisers were reported and closed. Two are still running.

So mom's flopped on the ground howling and Travion ignores her, runs right past her and up the hill, immortalizing the moment he decided to throw her under the bus. IMO they both knew they weren't going to get away with it. MOO.

More from the same ABC reporter interviewing Maliyah's grandmother:

I asked her if she thought there was a chance that her daughter and her boyfriend Travion Thompson were innocent and she said 'no'.
ABC13-Mycah Hatfield

That's a powerful statement coming from Sahara's mother IMO.

I love this post, especially about Sahara and Thompson. If you look at the video is that Tim Miller in the back with the hat? ( I saw his face at Thompson's "helicopter" monologue, and as Kahan said in the interview they both thought it was so obvious).

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this without re-posting the links, but in one of his interviews, the first interview to come out in the media, dad said he'd only ever met Maliyah once, last summer. So she wouldn't have been with him earlier this year. That's the only thing that makes me think that him asking if he could see her at the time of this tragedy is a coincidence. If he was a regular in her life, it would be much harder to put the visit off and cover up abuse, but being as he'd only ever seen her once in 2 and a half years, I think it would have been very easy to say 'that would be great but we're just working on 'x,y or z' so can we make it October time? She loves Halloween so would be great if you could spend that with her'. I think I'm just chatting bubbles now because I'm reading this back and thinking someone who can grin like that for a mugshot weeks after their beautiful baby has died would never think that clearly. They should never have been allowed around a child, and I'm sure there are a few people around this baby who wish they'd taken more drastic action. It's hard though

I can picture Sahara Ervin owning a hair brush for black hair shown below. The rounded shape at the top of the brush might leave marks similar to a coiled extension cord or hanger if it was angled downward from the top while connecting. If it was used in a jabbing motion, it might also resemble a cord or hanger.

I think both methods of a hair brush beating could be classified as blunt force, and I am wondering if they could cause internal bleeding. Although her autopsy result is not complete, there was no mention of head or internal injuries...other than a broken arm bone. In a recent case, A.J. Freund was repeatedly hit with a hand-held shower head, which agreed with his autopsy findings, but a fractured skull was also documented.

These two cases are similar, in that both men (one a bf, one a husband) admitted that the child was beaten by their mother the night before they were found dead the next morning. These statements were only made after incriminating evidence was produced. Both males disposed of the children's bodies.

I am hoping that Maliyah's final autopsy will show a cause of death related to abuse, so that both Ervin and Thompson can be charged with murder, as in the Fruend's case. If it doesn't, I hope that a review by another pathologist is requested for a second opinion. jmo

Your post made me think about Maliyah's funeral; we had no knowledge then of the broken arm.
As long as the autopsy report remains unready for release, there can be other injuries we have yet to learn. LE seems to just be parceling out only what is necessary, IMO, to keep them locked up.
I really want to know if they are being held in "administrative detention", away from general population, as those charged with crimes against children often are.

It's about time. I don't think one person fell for the boyfriend's ridiculous dramatics in his interview. That had to be the worst performance from a suspect I've ever seen.
I actually had a physical reaction to that dude's performance, it was grotesquely obvious he was lying. So is he also lying when he points the finger at Mom and says she beat that poor baby with a brush? Are we to believe that's the looped pattern on her body?
