A woman died Thursday after an Arlington officer shot her while firing at an approaching loose dog, police said.

Margarita Victoria Brooks, 30, was taken to Medical City Arlington, where she died, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

First responders were called about 5:15 p.m. to check on Brooks, who was reported to be passed out in a grassy area near Cantor Drive and North Collins Street. The officer approached her and noticed an unrestrained dog. When the officer called out to the woman, the dog began to run at the officer and bark, police said. The officer retreated from the dog, pulled out his gun and fired multiple times at the dog, police said.

NO WAY I just found out this was NOT A pit bull it was a small dog ....I don't have a link , I'm local but I'M SURE he should have called animal control, that was their dog pit mix and I'm sure he was protecting the owner or could have avoided shooting at the poor doggie WTH and If he is that bad of a shot he needs to be fired!!!! Fox 4 said witnesses saw him turn to run as he shot this morning , I don't know if that's totally accurate but they need to release the body cam footage or I will be out there protesting for said Cops removal. They Better get this right .

ETA: I'm so angry about this one Didn't even read your link which backs up newscast I mentioned.

A more complete article:
Texas officer accidentally kills woman while shooting at dog

A police officer carries multiple weapons. Why did he chose the most lethal one for a dog which was "small and a mix between a beagle and Labrador retriever and didn't appear to be aggressive"?
Because he is a cop, and in America a cop can do anything they want and get away with it if say they were in fear for their life. Over and over again.

I am really upset that he shot at this dog in the first place. If he was so afraid of a small-ish dog that he had to turn around and run, he shouldn’t be a police officer.

Rest in Peace Margarita, a very sad situation. So vulnerable living on the streets. Praying for her and friends and family. So so sad JMO

LE sometimes has to make split second decision, to protect themselves and others. Not going to be able to make correct decision every time they draw that weapon. But it doesn't make this Lady's passing less tragic. JMO No disrespect to other opinions. Dangerous out on the streets. Very sad this incident.Am sure it will be investigated

Poor woman :(
If the dog wasn't big (a pit bull for instance) I don't understand why that police officer used his handgun...
Things like that really should never happen :(

. Thank you, hard to watch. Was dog coming toward Officer aggressively ? Can shaper eyes interpret for me please ? Very sad, what an awful way to leave this life. The police officer will live with this every day for the rest of his life. Just a tragic encounter all the way around

I understand the split second decisions officers make, when their lives are in danger. I never second guess the situations when a weapon is involved, in a situation that is life threatening to the officer. Even in the cases where a toy gun was pointed at an officer, if it looks realistic I can understand.

But this dog did not seem to be capable of threatening the life of the officer. My own opinion.

I didn't see a threat from dog either, but am a dog person and have lived with multiple rescues for years. Thank you, my eyesight is not the best anymore, appreciate your comments on this sad situation. JMO

I'm sick of hearing excuses for ridiculous conduct like this. It only leads to more paranoia on the part of officers. This is not some video game where everywhere they turn someone or something is trying to kill them. We had a sleeping homeless woman and a smallish dog. And dammit the rest of us don't get to irrationally shoot at every dog that barks or looks at us wrong and call it justified.

I just watched the full video. So he gave that dog like 2 seconds before wildly shooting to kill. And then he has the nerve to tell the woman to get a hold of her dog...the woman he just shot. What a flipping moron. But I bet that dog was more threatening and aggressive than the old woman the cop shot in the back at Costco. I mean he shot her in the back and they aren't releasing THAT video.

I'm a completely law abiding citizen. I've never even gotten a traffic ticket. Cops scare the crap out of me.

. I wasn't calling this a justifed shooting, there's a lot we don't know, I don't know the police department here, nor the officer involved. But I believe it will be investigated. I asked because viewing that video, I did not see the threat when weapon was fired and I explained why Thanks for your comments. JMO

I think some police officers are really stressed because of their job. That's why they become paranoid and use their guns without thinking enough! :(

For the flip side of this story, quick action by officers early this morning potentially saved the lives of hundreds of people. A mass shooting in a crowded restaurant/entertainment district in Dayton Ohio, and officers neutralized the suspect in less than a minute.

Nine people died but it could have been so much worse.
