Affidavit: Lufkin man pushed child in pond to make room in home for another child.
The Angelina County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 17-year-old man charged in the drowning death of a 3-year-old boy last week.
Bobby Woods Jr., 17, is charged with capital murder.
According to the sheriff's office, Woods confessed to killing Mason Cuttler.
According to an arrest affidavit, Lieutenant Brett Maisel and Texas Ranger Steven Rayburn interviewed Woods, who said he took Mason to the pond and pushed him into the water and watched him as he began to drown and turned his back to him, making no attempt to rescue him, despite Mason's cries for help.
The affidavit states Woods said he wanted Mason to die because his girlfriend was pregnant and he wanted to make room in the home for his unborn child.

Whoa...I never expected this. I just really thought this was a case of a child getting out of parents' sight and accidentally drowning. I wonder if the police knew of this right away? or was it found out through texts/informants? He might've gotten away with it?!
what screw is loose in someone's brain that tells them "gee my gf is preggo, let me off another kid so there will be more room" that doesnt jibe at all. more than likely the teenage guy thought the kid's 3 year old behavior was annoying and he just decided to dispose of him. disgusting and cold.
I take it Mason's footprints weren't the only ones they saw around the pond after he vanished.
I imagine they were eventually able to follow Mason's footprints from the house to the pond, accompanied by another set of prints that were much larger.
I'd guess that the videotaped confession is going to be pretty telling to a jury, he can claim he was coerced all he wants to. Him being only 17 y.o. may end up causing them some problems in a capital murder case though.
worst he can get is life with chance of parole, the supreme court has ruled. not possible for him to get the DP or even LWOP anymore.
bogus confessions do happen. in the majority of cases i've followed that involve them, all involve the same factors
1) dead/murdered child/children
2) public pressure to solve a case
3) young/not too intelligent suspects.
so i'll keep an open mind both ways on this case.

I didn't think there was any public pressure at all to solve the case, was there? I think the public would have been completely satisfied with a finding of accidental drowning. i think it was an enormous surprise that someone drown this child on purpose.
On Friday, an Angelina County Sheriff’s Office detective, a Texas Ranger, and Vernon Parish, Louisiana Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the aunt of 3-year-old Mason Cuttler, who drowned on a pond, on a capital murder charge.
Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said that Billie Jean Cuttler, who is also Bobby Woods’ girlfriend, was arrested in Leesville, Louisiana at 2:53 p.m. Friday. An Angelina County grand jury indicted Cuttler and Woods on capital murder charges Thursday.
