Teenage girl, 51-year-old woman found dead with gunshot wounds after Arlington house fire

Police say a 15-year-old girl and a 51-year-old woman who had gunshot wounds were found dead at a home following a house fire in Arlington.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Police say a 15-year-old girl and a 51-year-old woman who had gunshot wounds were found dead at a home following a house fire in Arlington.

Some neighbors saw the fire and law enforcement response but didn’t hear anything leading up to the shooting.

Crews first found the 15-year-old, who was later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office and Arlington police as Maddie Prescott. She was rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

As crews continued to search the home, they found a 51-year-old woman with a gunshot wound. Her name and manner of death has not been released, but police confirm she was a relative of Maddie.

This corrects the spelling of the young victim’s name to Mattie Kay Prescott, and specifies she died from a gunshot to the head. The 51-year old woman is NOT described as a victim of homicide, as Mattie is, and no suspects have been identified or sought by law enforcement, so IMO this likely was the murder of a child by a parent.

She said Mattie lived in the house with her mother and that they were both beautiful people. Mattie had recently won a volleyball tournament and her mother was active in the community and seemed like a good mother, the neighbor said.

Layla, who said she knew the family well, added that Mattie’s mother was a “kind, sweet person” but had recently been struggling with depression. Another neighbor, Brenda Zamarripa, said she didn’t know the family well but would say hello to them when she saw them outside. Zamarripa saw the smoke when she came home Thursday evening.”

Definitely determined to have been a murder-suicide. Jennifer Prescott, the mother, murdered her daughter and the killed herself. Mattie was homeschooled, and I can’t help but wonder if there were signs of trouble in the home that might’ve been caught if she had attended school outside the home.

An absolute tragedy. Hoping family members know something about why this happened and can help each other get through this horror.
Both of them, especially the young girl, died way too soon.
I guess LE has really nothing more to do, and that's a tuff thing for LE -- their motto of "to serve and protect" has been done in this situation, I would assume. They probably were as sure of the result as to "who did what" as possible -- along with the M.E. SMH.

she attended a private school, none of us (her classmates) knew her mother would ever act out violently, even though her mental illnesses were already known by some, i don’t suppose many knew the extent. i never met her, but according to my family members who had, she appeared to be a polite person.
