No, it was in the news. I can't remember who found the mom - if it was the family, LE or what. But the newly found missing mom had expressed she didn't wish to reconnect with her first family. I don't remember what year this was or where, maybe 5 years ago?
I was referring to Minnie’s case.

If this poster is actually her daughter, Minnie died in Alabama December 1976. However they know nothing more about her disappearance.

Message Boards

I strongly suspect this was an error. Ancestry has death records for Minnie Cole on the date and at the location in the message, but the deceased is listed as black in the Social Security records - and the Minnie in this case is white. The original match may have been made on a common name and birthdate, but it seems to have just been a coincidence.

So the case still seems to be unsolved.

It might be helpful if we knew the reason for the hospital stay. What kinds of treatments/procedures normally required that length of time (12 days)? jmo

Galveston is about 4.5hrs/280 miles from Meridian. So not only is there the question of why Minnie went to the University of Texas Medical Center after disappearing, but how she got there.

I have the impression that if she ended up in that hospital it was for some serious reason... maybe she was hit by a car or something like that, and she met someone there... they discharged her from the hospital and she went with that person without remembering who she was... It's unfortunate for her children and husband who never knew what happened, and her children, maybe some of them are still there or they're very old...
whatever it is
Rest in peace

I agree with you if she was hit by a car. At this time in history, they did not understand brain injury and concussion. The question remains what happened to her from 1958-1960 and then after 1960. If the race is different with the death date, then this is not her. (IMO).

The Minnie Pearl Cole @Diane Redfern posted is black, as @alb1on mentioned:

(1950 census linked above, and additionally she was living in Florida at the time.)

This is the person linked to the SSN 417-58-9868 the daughter mentioned in the Ancestry thread.

So, was the daughter mistaken (wish we knew how she found the person in Alabama), or is Doe Network for stating she’s white?

Interesting point about race, could she be biracial or pass for being white? I ride the bus a lot and at times I cannot tell the difference. Real life.

In the south, at the time, it would have been a very touchy issue due to the ‘One Drop Rule’ (one drop of ‘black blood’ and you’re black, legally) as well as the usual societal mores. I’m from Louisiana, was a teenager in the ‘80s, and there were still older people of both races who referred to people who could pass as ‘passe blanc’.

Which is a long way of saying that the question of her actual race (or rather, what Minnie would have been considered at the time, given the above) did cross my mind. That said, Texas has a lot of German immigrant descendants, so superficially her ‘Heine’ maiden name implies (to me) that she was probably white.

It crossed my mind that Heine would be German. My late father's ancestors were born in the Austrian Hungarian Empire, and I can usually recognize German names. Not all the time. If anyone is researching Minnie, Heine and Conrad would be names to research. But I am confused about the last name Cole. Is that a married name? I'm from New York and also a teenager in the 80's. As I recall, we did not have a lot of forced busing in the early 1970's.

We don’t have a ton to go on, but according to Minnie Marie Heine Conrad’s daughter, Conrad was her married name (and the daughter’s father).

Somewhere along the way she discovered Minnie Pearl Cole in Alabama. We don’t know how she made the connection from MPC to her missing mother.

Here’s her story on the Ancestry forums.

I am going to the library and will do some deep diving. According to the daughter she was born in Meridain, Texas. Minnie could be short for Mary, Minerva, Wilhelmina, Winifred, Winona and Hermione. Also, the surname Heine could be German, Austrian and Jewish. I wish we knew if the surname was shortened from a long German name. Also, I found a gentleman who died in the same area and his name was spelled Heiney and was from Missouri? He was about 4 to 5 years older, could he be a brother? Find a grave has the information. Regarding Minnie Pearl Cole, in my personal opinion, the daughter could have heard stories that we do not know about that lead her to this discovery.
