KAITLIN ARMSTRONG TRIAL:It is a full courtroom here in Austin, TX for the opening statements in the murder trial of Kaitlin Armstrong. This case drew international headlines after Armstrong fled to Costa Rica. I will live tweet below.
The family of Mo Wilson just walked in and is sitting in the front row behind the prosecutors. Court documents reveal in 2021, Mo Wilson got caught up in a love triangle between herself, Armstong and professional cyclist Colin Strickland. Wilson was shot and killed May 2022.
Don't worry, nothing is happening yet. We are about 10 minutes late and counting. Attorneys are casually walking around and chatting with each other. Neither Judge nor Armstrong have entered the courtroom yet.
A lot of people are asking about how to livestream the hearing.
@KXAN_News is NewsNation's affiliate and is livestreaming the hearing with analysis by
@willrdupree. I'll be reporting live throughout the course of the day on
@NewsNation.
Judge Kennedy has taken her seat at the bench. Armstrong has just entered the courtroom. She is wearing a blue blouse and black pant suit. She is not restrained or cuffed in any way. She did not show any emotion on her face. About 5-6 deputies escorted her inside.
Jury now entering courtroom. They are on the left side of the courtroom. Judge in the back right corner. Prosecution on courtroom left next to jury. Defense courtroom right. Four sheriff's deputies surround Kaitlin Armstrong.
Kaitlin Armstong stands and responds to allegations within the indictment: NOT GUILTY. She speaks those two words with authority and confidence. The state will now begin making its opening remarks with the help of a PowerPoint slide.
State begins by sharing information about Mo Wilson. Says she was one of the best gravel racers in the world. Says on 5/11/22, the last thing Mo did on this earth is "scream in terror. And you will hear those screams," state says. There is audio of the assault and murder.
ADA Rickey Jones is giving these opening statements. He introduces himself and his colleagues. He now introduces the three key players: Mo Wilson (victim), Colin Strickland (professional cyclist), Kaitlin Armstrong (defendant).
In 2019, Kaitlin and Colin began a romantic relationship. They became business partners.Kaitlin and Colin shared access to laptops and iPads that had access to iMessages from Colin's phone. The relationship became on again and off again. When the relationship was off, they dated others but continued to live together.
In Oct. 2021, Colin began a relationship with Mo Wilson. Jones says Colin had to confront Armstrong for calling Mo and confronting her. Colin and Mo continued to be friends, but he changed her name in his cellphone to keep it secret from Armstrong.
In Oct. 2021, Armstrong called Mo. Armstrong owned a 9mm Sig Sauger. In Jan. 2022, she goes a purchases a 50-round box of ammo and is seen practicing her firearms in the months leading up to the murder.
CELL PHONE RECORDS FOR MAY 2, 2022: Colin is in California and messaging with Mo while Kaitlin was home with the laptop. Kaitlin is logged into Colin's gmail and IG. She can view his messages. 9 days before Mo is killed, Kaitlin looks up pictures of Mo from her phone. Kaitlin decides to fly to AZ to drive back to ATX with Colin. Kailtin and Colin arrive back to ATX on May 9, 2022, two days before the murder.
May 10, 2022: Mo comes to Austin a few days before her scheduled race in Hico, Texas. She stays with her friend Caitlin Cash in East Austin. I visited that home yesterday. Neighbors tell me Cash still lives there, but spent about a month after the murder away from ATX while the crime scene was getting cleaned up. It is unclear whether or not Cash will be called as a witness. She was the first person to discover Wilson's body and called 911. A neighbors Ring Doorbell camera caught Armstrong's jeep at the scene on the night of the murder.
On the days before Mo was killed, Armstrong was monitoring Wilson's whereabouts on Strava, an app that tracks people's location in a general area. On May 9, Armstrong looked Wilson up once. On May 10, Armstrong looked up Wilson four times.
On day of murder, Colin and Mo arrange to go swimming together at Deep Eddy pool. Colin tells Armstrong he is running errands across town. Mo gives Colin the apartment address where she is staying. Armstrong has access to all of Colin's text messages.
Night of murder:
5:43pm: Colin picks up Mo at Cash's apartment. Goes to pool & restaurant

Day after the murder, 5/12/22 police canvas area and find the Ring Doorbell cam-Police interview Colin and he tells all, confirming the story-Prior to interview, police discover black Jeep at Armstrong's home. Colin admits that is Kaitlin's car.
At this point, police now consider Armstrong a person of interest. She has a class B warrant out. Armstrong is brought in but can't explain why her Jeep was there. Police release her. A search warrant is executed and two 9mm pistols are located, including Armstrong's Sig Sauer.
Days following murder:May 13: Kaitlin caught on camera selling Jeep for $13K, Kaitlin Ubers to airportMay 14: Kaitlin flies from ATX to Houston to NYCMay 18: Kaitlin buys ticket to Costa Rica using email, credit card and sister's name & passportJune 22: Kaitlin uses different name and pays $6,425 for plastic surgeryJune 29: US Marshals locate Kaitlin in Costa Rica and return her to the U.S.
The jury made up of 8 women and 6 men are listening intently to the ADA's opening statements. He is doing a very good job speaking directly to them and walking them through the process. Armstrong sits quietly and is paying close attention, as well.
Cell phone evidence for Kaitlin:-May 27: From Costa Rica, Armstrong searches her name and reads news articles about murder investigation-June 29: Kaitlin factory resets her phone and erases all data
Video Surveillance:-Colin and Mo leaving the area before the murder-Four surveillance cameras caught Kaitlin's Jeep circling the area-Kaitlin's Jeep spotted at the base of the apartment stairs one minute after Mo Wilson unlocks the door

DNA Evidence:-Mo Wilson's bike was swabbed after it was found in the bushes 20 yards from murder scene. DNA expert expected to testify of strong likelihood that DNA matches that of Armstrong.
Now fast forward to Oct. 11, 2023 -- 19 days before the trial, Kaitlin Armstong attempts to flee from law enforcement while heading to a doctor's appointment. That attempted escape was all caught on camera. State has rested its opening statements. Defense up next.
