GUILTY TX - Noted sniper Chris Kyle & Chad Littlefield slain at Erath County gun range

Maybe he is truly mentally ill .... Evidently he will not adhere to medical advice. I mean he was sent to mental professionals many times before the killings.. No hospital can treat you beyond your will to be treated. So... My opinion is he should be locked away, if mentally ill , treated and never be set loose on society again. Ever. Imo.

I agree with locked away forever, mentally ill or otherwise. The strange thing to me is that he appears to be able to switch sanity/insanity at a moments notice...........whichever is to his advantage at any given moment. Just look at how sane & "with it" he has been at the trial. IMO, he's crazy like a fox.

Right. And they can lock him up just like the guy who shot Reagan. Just wish they wouldn't wait around for them to harm others first.

IMO if he seems stable now it's likely because someone is overseeing his treatment - he's being taken care of and taking his medications and doesn't have access to drugs or alcohol. (It might also be why he's put on weight.)

I think it would hold true to minimize mental illness whether a person is military or not. Our society tends to stigmatize it. Also, it is scary when your body betrays you and fails, I can't imagine how much more so when it is your mind. People probably want to deny it even to their own self.

MOO, one of the reasons society tends to stigmatize mental illness is because there are criminals who use that excuse to escape being held accountable for their crimes. Think of all the people world wide who have mental illnesses & would never, ever consider killing someone. The problem with committing someone to a mental institution is that very often they are eventually released & set free to cause more mayhem. I have even read that John Hinckley is allowed out of the mental institution on week-ends to spend time with his family. How scary is that? Probably the only reason he is still institutionalized at all is because it was a POTUS that he tried to kill.

Do you have a link to something about this? I've been searching everywhere but can't seem to narrow it down. Thanks.

In a brief filed with the court on Tuesday that detailed other offenses, prosecutors said Routh "lied about shooting a child in Iraq, pulling dead bodies out of the water, or piled up dead bodies in Haiti or [having] seen multiple dead babies."

The filing goes on to claim that Routh told a friend "he was making false claims to [the VA] to get benefits."

Also if you know right from wrong you are guilty. He knew what he did was wrong... he told LE that. He tells his guards "it's more fun to be bad".. ripping toliets out and doing bad stuff while locked up. Ok he may have some mental problems (personality problems and drug abuse) but he knows right from wrong that is the difference in punishment or guilt.

He was sick before he was a Marine. I also read somewhere he was faking it for disability so that he wouldn't have to work. I have no links.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this link!! It is a filing brief presented to the court that tells everyone what they need to know about Eddie Ray Routh. If it is presented as a brief I would think it has to be backed up by evidence. Otherwise, I don't believe a judge would let it be filed.

True. I read the same about Hinckley when they were considering weekend visits.

Edited to add:
I think the reason mental illness is stigmatized in our society has more to do with our obsession with perfection and we don't like the thought of defects. Especially the kind that can't be fixed.

I agree with you that people use MI to try and get away with things. On the other hand, many times people with MI actually commit crimes. Prisons are full of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing/reading the evidence. I suspect we will see the most evidence dealing with his mental health in the PT rebuttal case, after the DT has made whatever claims they are going to make regarding his mental state.

Like i said previously, it is too late for ERR. He is going away for life somewhere, be it prison or a mental hospital. But...

If he was sick before he was a Marine, that begs the question of why he was ever allowed to enlist and further, be active and deployed for four years. They need to seriously reconsider screening if that is the case.

And...

It still would not absolve the VA in my mind even if he was sick prior to joining. To expound on my diabetes analogy from before; if a marine, soldier, sailor had diabetes before joining and somehow that was missed in the screening process, then later began to experience some things that diabetes can cause such as kidney failure, I would fully expect the VA to do more than throw an insulin script at them. I would expect dialysis and for the VA to get them on a transplant list. In other words, treat them to the fullest extent possible.

No doubt VA should be responsible for treating any disease acquired by a veteran during the course of his/her service. Unfortunately the VA is just like any other bureaucratic entity............incompetent!

Not only that but the killer didn't have reason to have combat flashbacks that day correct? Don't believe he was ever in combat ... Im gonna read everything this weekend so I can understand fully the evidence.

No he didnt. Those in the military who have PTSD can have flashbacks of war if they hear rapid gunfire. Yet this wasn't the case here. The only one firing weapons was the murderer and I think it will become relevant that both victims were shot in the back. It shows imo he knew he couldn't take them down if they had had time to react and were facing him when he drew his weapon.

Rut-roh, if all of this comes in during the Prosecutor's rebuttal it will not bode well for the defendant.

It will make the jury not trust the defendant nor the DT and they may think he is just pretending to act mentally ill when he is not.

If the jury gets to the point they don't trust the defendant's claims then he will be convicted in short order.

Texas jurors don't take kindly to someone who is trying to pull something over on them.

IMO

Tweets are coming in on the nbcdfw website. The LE who transported ERR to Erath Co. & booked him into jail is currently on the stand.
