GUILTY TX - Noted sniper Chris Kyle & Chad Littlefield slain at Erath County gun range

What in the actual heck did they start sending a check for AFTER he killed two people! Our government is stupid. The end.

Agree with the stupid part. I'm guessing that the hospitalization in the VA hospital several weeks prior to the murders confirmed Routh was mentally ill, and thus eligible for disability. It usually takes about 6 weeks or so from confirmed diagnosis to beginning of disability checks. (Although he was hospitalized in the Fall, prior to the murders???) So he'd probably have started receiving checks even if the murders didn't happen. I wasn't aware that someone in jail could receive disability checks, though.

Personally, I have no doubt this man was mentally ill -- the question is, did he understand what he was doing at the time he did it, and did he understand the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, probably the best outcome for Routh is to be found guilty. In prison, as is already the case, due to getting his meds regularly and not being on drugs and alcohol, he'd probably be in the best shape psychologically (except, of course, the prison part). He's already demonstrated that, left to his own devices, he will abuse drugs and alcohol (aided and abetted by his mother and uncle), and not follow his doctor's advice, and thus he will continue to present danger to his family and to society in general.

Ok, I need some help understanding something. Tweets indicate that a Routh family friend of 27 years is now testifying. Routh also worked for her. She looks to be middle aged. She testified that she sometimes smoked pot with him. His mother testified yesterday that she sometimes smoked pot with him & his uncle has testified that he & Routh smoked pot on the day of the murders. Since I am elderly I may be a bit out of touch with reality. Is it usual for older more mature people to run around smoking pot???? I will be the first to admit that I have wanted to just to see what it was like, but I never have simply for the fact that it is illegal. I've lived way too long without any criminal offenses to risk going to jail at this point in my life. Whenever I think of using pot I think of younger people, not mature people. Is my thinking all screwed up?

I agree with everything you wrote.

As for the check, I know that's probably how it played out and that the justification for continuing it until conviction probably runs along a technicality theme but I really do wish that SOMEtimes they would employ common sense and maybe think " well, perhaps we should suspend this just until we see what the outcome is, seeing as the taxpayers are already covering his housing. Not to mention being on the hook for all trial cost"

I don't know that I'd say unusual, but I'm never surprised when I find out someone smokes pot. I'm 50 and have friends both older and younger who do. And if you think about it - people who started smoking pot in the 1970s are now in their 60s and 70s.

America is turning prisons into mental hospitals, but jails are neither meant nor designed to treat sick people. How many prisons have psychiatrists on staff 24/7? Someone with a mental illness in jail is more likely to be preyed upon, not given the treatment he or she needs, disciplined more often (because they have more trouble following the rules) and more likely to be injured in a fight. Etc. Why is mental illness so often treated with handcuffs and incarceration rather than compassion and care? Based on what I've read and seen so far, IMO, Routh is clearly ill and needs the help he should have been given months - if not years - ago.

If he's found guilty and sent to jail that's what happens, but if he's ill I don't think sending him to jail would bring about the best outcome for him.

HAHAHAH thanks for that! ^^ "smell the roses" While I understand your thinking, I do realize like stated above that many "hippies" from the 70s are now 40 years older but it always shocks me too! I'm in my early 30s FTR, not that it matters b/c ppl of all ages seem to enjoy weed these days. No judgement, just general facts. I do find it odd that everyone in ERR life smokes pot with him. How often was he actually sober? Mix in some meds and beers which we know of and it seems he barely had time to be "sober" enough to know what state of mind he was actually in. JMO of course.

I've been reading tweets on nbcdfw.com. Routh's sister testified that she & her husband had smoked pot with Routh one time but after their child was born, they decided no more. Routh's girlfriend has also been testifying this morning. They had fights because she wanted him to stop drinking, smoking pot, & smoking anything period.
So far it seems that his girlfriend & sister were the only significant people in his life who ever discouraged his potentially harmful habits. The others actually appear to have been enablers.

Some people use Xanax, Valium, or alcohol to 'take the edge off.'

Others use marijuana.

I agree with you about the part about turning prisons into mental hospitals. Back in the 80's, many of the state hospitals were downsized, and mentally ill people dumped out in the street, with the idea that outpatient treatment was more appropriate. Sounded good in theory, but reality was that many ended up homeless and virtually unable to care for themselves, and those with more violent tendencies (which could have been controlled, if they were kept on their meds and off alcohol and recreational drugs) ended up in prison -- and that's still happening today. I don't know about Texas, but I do know that many states DO have certain prisons where they direct those clearly mentally ill. And yes, some prisons do have psychiatrists on staff full time (a friend of mine had that job for many years).

Routh SHOULD have gotten help long ago, and since he spoke of suicidal and homicidal ideations, he should have been hospitalized until he were stable and no longer having these sorts of inclinations, and able to demonstrate that he was able to follow his medical regime and stay away from alcohol/drugs. But that's not how it works in today's world with mentally ill people. Insurance will usually only cover very limited stays. This sounds very similar to the Julie Schenecker case in some respects.

Sister thought Routh had traded his "ladybug car "for the truck until Routh said he had killed them for the truck.

Ok he killed them for the truck... he knew what he was doing.
