Rains County Justice of the Peace Don Smith presided over Monday’s detention hearing regarding the daughter.

“I have ruled we will hold her for 10 more days,” Smith told the Herald-Banner. “That’s 10 working days.”

In juvenile detention cases, the presiding juvenile adjudicator rules every 10 working days as to whether to keep a suspect in the custody of a juvenile detention center.

But Smith said he won’t be conducting any further detention hearings in the case.

“At the conclusion of the 10 days, or before, she will go before a district judge who will determine if she will remain in custody until trial,” Smith said.

I think it's obvious Erin Caffey will be held another 10 days, then another 10 days after that if this is what it takes. She will not be walking anywhere but between JDC and court.

After reading the story, IMO EC should definitely be charged as an adult. She helped plan the murders - told the killers where to find money and jewelry. On the night of the murders she quieted the family dog - told the killers to return later. She packed a suitcase for herself. She waited at the end of the road until the deed was done, then drove away with them.

I wonder where she intended to go with the suitcase.

Autopsy Shows Caffey's Alive During Fire

We have new information on the murders of a Rains County family. Preliminary autopsy results reveal that members of the Caffey family were still alive when the house was set on fire.
The mother, Penny, 13 year old Matthew and 8 year old Tyler, had all been shot or stabbed

above is the Caffey's obit. I wonder if Erin was allowed to attend the services? Probably would have drove home the reality of her actions. I wonder how many times she has wished for her mother only to realize she doesn't have her to comfort her any longer? I just wonder what really goes through her selfish mind.

I'm so happy to hear this. 16 year olds may be immature in many ways, but she KNEW what she was doing and knew right from wrong. She has absolutely no compassion for anyone except herself. And after killing 3 people (and giving a hell of a try at 4) for the "love of her life", I'm sure she's trying to blame it all on the other three.

Erin receives two life terms eligible for parole when she is 59. Wilkinson and Waid also avoided the death penalty in November by pleading guilty for their involvement in the killings. McDowell said both would likely receive life sentences with parole. Johnson was sentenced to 40 years in prison and may be eligible for parole in 20 years.....

The June 8th People Magazine (Melissa Joan Hart on the cover) has a story about this case, the focus on the dad who has tried to rebuild his life. If anyone has interest, take a look out for this article.

Of note--he has forgiven his daughter and "fought with prosecutors to drop their insistence Erin have no chance of parole, and she is now eligible when she turns 55, though Caffey hopes it will somehow happen sooner." Also, this quote from him: "Even when our children break out hearts, we still love them," he says. "She isn't some stranger; she's my flesh adn blood. It's my job as a parent to forgive her."

I shake my head sadly.....and say that Mr. Caffey is a person that I could never be in his situation. He genuinely has a big heart, even if I don't agree with his sentiments.

I just watched this episode and I have to say, it was well done. The concept reminded me of, 'The Lovely Bones'...artsy, but weird. I don't really like words and emotions being attributed to a dead person, but I guess the husband approved the dialogue? I live in east Texas, so I kept up with this case, even though there wasn't a whole lot of coverage. Just a sad, senseless case. There's 1 thing I was wondering, though. When Erin was 1st interviewed, because of her age, she was allowed to write out a statement, without an attorney present. Later, she was charged as an adult. IMO, these 2 things seem so at odds with each other, like a manipulation of the law. Not that I think she should have gotten off, I don't, but I was wondering if this was grounds for some kind of appeal. To be legally treated as a child, long enough for cops to get what they want, but then to be charged as an adult, just seems wrong and prejudicial.
