Police, ATF responding to reports of shooting at Texas mall

Police in McAllen, Texas, confirm that they are responding to reports of a shooting at a shopping mall.

The scene is unfolding at La Plaza Mall along Interstate 2 not far from McAllen International Airport.​

“The Hidalgo County Constable Precinct's office wrote on Facebook: "Active shooter at the McAllen Plaza Mall. Stay away from the area! Several law enforcement agencies heading to the scene."

The city of McAllen, Texas, tweeted regarding the incident.

"Please stay away from La Plaza Mall. McAllen police is on the scene. We will continue to update you," the tweet read.”

Shortly after the active shooter report, the McAllen Police Department told KRGV-TV that it was instead investigating an attempted robbery at a jewelry store inside the mall. ​

That robbery could have easily gone sideways and become a shooting situation. Glad LE got control of it quickly.

Excellent question. I think at some point, it would have escalated to gunfire. If they smashed the jewelry cases while threatening staff ... how the heck would they make it out of the mall?! Let alone to a "getaway" car?

my friend from Chi was in McAllen for a funeral and her motel was across from the mall. ppl were evacuated to the motel.
