Prison Guards Find Nearly $18M Worth of Cocaine in Donated Bananas

“The substance was tested. Cocaine! 540 bundles, $17,820,000 worth, were on the shipment!” The TDCJ tweeted Friday.

The DEA and Customs continue to investigate, it wasn’t immediately clear who the sender or original intended recipient was.

Prison guards find $17 million of cocaine in box of donated fruit

Two sergeants at the Scott Unit set out on Friday morning to pick up two pallets of already-ripe fruit - 45 banana-filled boxes - from the Ports of America in Freeport.

When they arrived to grab up their load, they found one of the boxes felt different from the rest.

One of the sergeants snipped away the straps and rummaged around until he uncovered a bundle hidden under the bananas. Inside, was a white powdery substance.

U.S. Customs showed up to help, and positively identified the substance as cocaine.

That's bananas! Nearly $18,000,000 worth of cocaine found in boxes of bananas

The port offered two pallets of the fruit to the TDCJ since no one ever claimed them.

Sometimes, life gives you lemons. Sometimes, it gives you bananas.

And sometimes, it gives you something you'd never expect!

This morning, TDCJ was donated 2 pallets of bananas, 45 boxes, from Ports of America in Freeport. They were being donated due to already being ripe.

Two sergeants of the Scott Unit arrived to pick them up, and discovered something not quite right.

Maybe they're going to a-peel for someone to come forward and claim them.

Hmmm.... it seems somebody's chosen shipping method did not work out so well. The bananas sat around somewhere for so long they became over ripe. And then somehow a decision was made - by someone - to donate the banana shipment to the prison system.

I suppose someone thought the banana shipment distribution method was foolproof. But, alas, it was not. Fools!
