(We really need a Fort Hood sub-forum, at this point.)

Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old soldier is dead after collapsing during a training exercise at Fort Hood in Texas, officials announced Friday.

According to a press release from the installation, 25-year-old Pvt. Corlton L. Chee died Wednesday after collapsing during a training exercise last week.

Chee was from Pinehill, N.M., and joined the Army in February 2020 as a tank crewman. He had been assigned to 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since July 2020.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

According to the Army, Chee collapsed during physical fitness training Aug. 28 and was transported to Baylor Scott and White Health in Temple, Texas, Aug. 30.

Chee died at the hospital with family by his side.

The Army said an autopsy will be conducted by the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Well, civilian autopsy is a good start.

Chee is Navajo and a fitness buff according to this article:

Family shocked by loss of Fort Hood soldier who collapsed during PT

Chee is the 30th soldier to die while assigned to Fort Hood this year, with more than one-third of soldiers’ deaths caused by an accident either on or off the base, according to information provided by Fort Hood Public Affairs Office. However, five of those soldiers’ deaths were ruled homicides, which has generated heightened scrutiny for Fort Hood and resulted in two Army-directed investigations into base leadership.

Johnson said the family is aware of the difficult year that Fort Hood has faced, but they will wait to decide exactly how to feel about Chee’s death once they have all the answers about why he died and the circumstances of that morning.

Yet, she admits it is difficult not to feel angry.

“But we remember him as a strong, brave, caring man,” Johnson said. “He was loved, and he will never be forgotten. He was our true Dine’ [Navajo] warrior.”

Really worried about Fort Hood & everyone assigned there!

Will blame really, truly be set where blame belongs, or are scapegoats being set up???

I just checked (it's 8:30pm EDT here now) , and the current temp. at Fort Hood, TX, is 82 degrees F. Tomorrow's high there is 94 degrees. It's Texas; it's hot at Fort Hood. Many military bases are located in locations that are not good areas for development -- hot and swampy, boondocks, etc. -- Fort Bragg, NC; MCRD Parris Island, SC; Fort Polk, LA, for examples.
.... resuming my post ....
The soldiers are used to it, if that's possible, but you never know -- we've seen that kind of thing before -- with G.I.'s, football players, runners, or other athletes during practice, or outside workers, etc. Heat can be a killer.
Let's hope the autopsy will tell us something.
And now I think about all the parents, spouses, and other relatives of those soldiers at Fort Hood, some wondering who might be next.

Apparently, this gentleman grew up in a beautiful area with rather brutal climate:

The straight north-south lines are the borders dividing Arizona & New Mexico, and New Mexico & Texas.

Heat, Mr. Chee was used to that. Humidity -- nope.

Waiting impatiently for more information!

Heat and humidity can be so dangerous in the south. We live in south Louisiana where humidity can reach up to 100%.

Family of Fort Hood soldier believes he was targeted and killed after collapsing at training, later dying

In an exclusive interview, Chee’s sister and mother say they are unconvinced that the father, son, nephew, and soldier simply collapsed while in physical training. His sister, Carma Johnson, feels with no doubt that her brother was targeted and killed.

“Something doesn’t add up. I’ve been saying that I believe my brother was murdered. I believe my brother was killed,” she said.

From the moment Johnson and her mother Jeanette Coho saw the lifeless body of Corlton in the hospital, they knew something seemed off.

“My thought was why from falling will it be like that? It shouldn’t be like that,” said Coho.

The bruises, the scrapes, and then the knot on his head, that doesn’t look like a fall. That does not look like he was just sprinting and he fell on a flat hard surface," said Johnson.

Being raised in the Ramah Navajo Community in New Mexico, Johnson says they were used to living and working in extreme, dry heat with little to no water at times. So, she knows the Central Texas temperatures wouldn't have caused his alleged fall. The sister says the conversation she had with Corlton the day before his collapse confirms her suspicion.

The day before it sounded like he was going up against something. He was saying that he didn’t want to go run that morning. There was a reason why. There was a reason why he was saying that three white boys are after him. There’s a reason why, they’re trying to do something to him. He knew it,” said Johnson.

Congress Investigates Fort Hood Following Soldier Deaths

Congress will launch an investigation into sexual assault, disappearances, deaths and the leadership’s response at Fort Hood after 28 soldiers stationed at the U.S. Army base in Texas died this year, two subcommittee leaders announced Tuesday.

According to data from Fort Hood officials, the 28 deaths include five homicides, as well as accidents, suicides, deaths related to illness, cases still under investigation and one combat-related death.

The subcommittees will jointly investigate if recent deaths “may be symptomatic of underlying leadership, discipline, and morale deficiencies throughout the chain-of-command.”
