I thought video showed her go overboard.

So right & if video exists then surely companion/s or lack of them were videoed too.

I noticed the exact same thing. :(

So looking at the video in the news link posted above, and then looking at pictures of the railings, I think a tall person could manage to fall. Bear with me...looking at the balconies from the rooms, they're shorter. If I were leaning over or maybe drunk and not in my right mind and throwing up, then I could see falling over. Even over the chest level ones. I know this isn't how she fell, but I was just making a note of it.
How could you possibly fall over a chest high railing while standing on a deck? Without standing on something or climbing up on the rail, I just can't see how it's possible but would really like to read how someone thinks it could happen.

My daughter and I took a cruise in February and we discussed people who went overboard while on a cruise ship. We examined the railings on different levels and decided that it was impossible to just accidentally fall off the ship. You would have to lift, climb or be thrown off. Jmo

STOP sleuthing the family. They are considered victims until/unless they are officially classified otherwise.

Apologies. On Dateline and 48 Hours they always show how one should look at the spouse or partner first, then the possible money trail.

Can you please post the forum etiquette because I am a newbie and couldn't find anything related to this in the forum rules.

Rules Etiquette & Information

VICTIM FRIENDLY

Websleuths is a victim friendly forum. Attacking or bashing a victim is not allowed. Discussing victim behavior, good or bad is fine, but do so in a civil and constructive way, and only when such behavior is relevant to the case.

The "victim friendly" rule extends to the family members of victims and suspects. Sleuthing family members, friends, and others who have not been designated as suspects is not allowed. Don't make random accusations, suggest their involvement, nor bash and attack them. Posting their personal information, including names, addresses, and background data -- even if it is public -- is not allowed. That does not mean, however, that statements made by family members and other third parties cannot come into discussion as the facts of the case are reported in the media.

Carnival says no one saw Broberg fall. Her traveling companions say they raised the alarm at 9 a.m. when she wasn't in her cabin.

It wasn't until 5 p.m. Saturday after they had reviewed the surveillance footage and spotted Broberg climbing a railing and falling backwards off the ship, that they called the Coast Guard.

http://www.wtsp.com/news/nation-now...-after-passenger-plunged-into-ocean/198694022

Carnival said: "Ship’s command was notified she was missing early afternoon. A ship wide search and review of camera footage was initiated simultaneously. It is important to understand that with rare exception missing persons reports on a cruise ship are false alarms. The footage involved multiple cameras and many hours of video since it was not known when she may have gone over. Man overboard technology is being tested throughout the cruise industry. The technology has historically been unreliable with an excessive amount of false alarms. We are continuing to test it though. Foul play is not suspected and local reports about blood and a knife are erroneous. This was a very tragic event."

The company added: “Sitting on a cruise ship railing is akin to sitting on the balcony railing of a high rise hotel. It is very risky and dangerous and against our rules.”

So we can't discuss family's employment?

Never did I even suggest in the smallest likelihood that he had anything at all to do with the death

I wish we knew more about her on the railing. Were there any other people in the video frame? (If so, are they trying to identify them and just haven't said?). Was she trying to keep her balance when she fell? It's so hard for me to imagine her being alone out there at 2 a.m. if she was cruising with friends if she wasn't trying to harm herself. :(

I posted above that Carnival said that no one saw her fall.

It's not unusual for people to be out on deck 10 at 2 a.m. (after a night of drinking), or perhaps she couldn't fall asleep and went for a walk around the ship. I believe deck 10 and deck 9 are the two decks that have outside access that you could walk around the ship. Deck 5 also has outside access, but is just a promenade.

I also know that the crew moves all of the lounge chairs to the back of the ship, stacks them up for the night so there isn't really many places to sit. Why she would prop herself up on the railing to sit, is confusing. I'm wondering if this is her first cruise and she is unaware of what could happen to someone sitting on a railing?!? I'm also curious as to which deck her cabin was on.

Here's a view of deck 10:

For those who cruise it's worth noting that speedy man overboard technology is implemented in cruise liners that are more expensive. It's expensive tech so the really luxury liners provide it others don't.... I read this on the cruisecritic website yesterday. A delay from 2am-5pm is not man overboard tech. It's not tech at all actually.

The delay was caused because her traveling companions did not report her missing until Noon or so, whereas she fell overboard alone at 2 a.m. If she fell overboard in that same spot at 2:00 p.m. there would have been thousands of witnesses on the decks.

Once the crew was advised she was MISSING around NOON the next day, there were repeated calls over the intercom on the ship for her to report to the purser's office. They even posted a big picture of her I assume on decks where many people walked about in hopes that someone saw her. Once she didn't report to a crew member, the entire ship was subject to lockdown. Every guest was required to return and stay in their cabin. I believe from noon until 5:00 pm the crew was checking every inch of the ship and reviewing security videos. Once it was confirmed via footage of her falling from the ship, they called the Coast Guard.

I believe Carnival did everything they could have possibly done in this situation.

Like I said, you'd have to be goofing off or drunk I think. If somebody decided they were going to throw up overboard (because they're drunk), I could see them leaning over too far. I'm 5ft 9in and I think I could get my waist to that railing on tip-toes. My husband is 6ft 4in. He would have no problem leaning over too far.

I think she accidentally fell. Suicidal individuals would climb over the railing and jump, not sit on it and fall backwards.

While we were watching the Yellowstone story last night (about the calf that had to be euthanized because tourists picked it up and put it in their car), we saw more footage of people doing stupid things around wildlife. We were there 7 years ago and there didn't seem to be this level of stupidity then. My hubby said "what happened?! Why are people acting like this now?" I picked up my phone and showed him. People are all to eager to get a perfect selfie of themselves. I don't know if this was what Samantha was doing, but she could have been a little tipsy, decided to climb the railing and get a perfect selfie.

Our phones have become SUCH a problem. I don't know what the answer is ultimately, but it makes me so sick. Could a family have lost her because she wanted to take a picture? :(
