And they gave him time to run.

An APD memo said Clark has gone "AWOL" and is thought to be in Indonesia, KVUE has also learned. According to the State Department, the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with that country.

Oh my. That wasn't in there when I read it the first time. Only that he was on an international trip. Ugh is right!

I am sorry but what a 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 VonTrey Clark is. Not only a first degree murderer, IMO, but scummy to the woman he was living with, too. And to kill his own child when it is a viable life at around 30 weeks. Now he's purposely gone to a country with no extradition treaty! Probably the last search on his digital footprint. Unbelievable a guy like that could pass the psychological testing that I believe most LE departments use. Unless he is a true sociopath.

Just read this thread for the first time. What a terrible waste of oxygen some 'people' are.

RIP Samantha and your little Madeline. It's for people like you I really hope there is an afterlife.

Wow, these are some interesting and frustrating developments. I hope Samantha's family and friends can at least find some comfort in knowing some of these answers, and take heart in knowing that although that sociopath is seemingly outside the reach of our LE, he will never live a day without looking over his shoulder. That stress alone will most likely shorten his life. Given his apparent personality disorder, it will not be long before he is involved in something nefarious again, and as hard as he will try to cover his bases, he will be found out. It's karma, and it's a b!tch.

They have added his attorney's statement:

Clark's attorney tells KVUE that his client filed for FMLA leave and did not know it had been denied until after he had already left for Indonesia for medical treatment. He claims he will be back in the United States by mid-August.

"We would have never authorized him to go to Jakarta, Indonesia. He was not given permission, he knows he wasn't given permission," Acevedo said on Thursday.

In a statement, Clark's attorney said, "If Officer Clark truly intended to slip out of the United States undetected, there are more clandestine methods than booking an international flight in his own name and using his own passport."

If he is charged and refuses to return to the U.S., a lawyer tells KVUE that the Bastrop County District Attorney would be responsible for dealing with Indonesian authorities and the county would also likely pay the cost to extradite Clark.

I guess we'll have to wait until August to see what happens. I'm not holding my breath...

He wasn't being arrested at the time. He didn't have to be clandestine.

He won't be back in August. He knows what he is doing, he went to a country where he can't be touched by us.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo sets the record straight. Chief Acevedo responds to allegations his department dropped the ball and let a rogue cop connected to a brutal murder leave the country. "The misconception out there is the Austin Police Department is investigating Mr. Clark on criminal charges and the truth of the matter is it's outside of our jurisdiction," Chief Acevedo said. "We have very little say in the course and conduct of that investigation." Chief Acevedo says he did everything in his power to legally put the heat on former APD Officer VonTrey Clark. Clark is connected to the murder of Samantha Dean whose pregnant body was found in a Bastrop parking garage. Clark admitted to fathering the child. But now Clark is in Indonesia out of the reach of law enforcement and Chief Acevedo responds to critics who say he let him get away. "If he went to the airport and we watched him go through the check point we watched him go on the plane there would be absolutely nothing we could do," Chief Acevedo said. "There's a misconception out there that we have the ability as a police department to just take somebody's passport to prevent him. That's not the way this country works." There are also concerns APD's internal investigation took too long. "We could not act administratively because we didn't want to do anything to jeopardize the criminal investigation," Chief Acevedo said. VonTrey Clark is not charged with any crime. Clark's attorney says his client is in Indonesia for medical reasons. But Chief Acevedo says he isn't buying it and questions what kind of medical treatment Clark could be getting in Jakarta that he couldn't get here. "Mr. Clark knew without a doubt was advised by this department very clearly that he was not approved to be leaving on any type of medical leave," Chief Acevedo said. "We live in a nation where people come from around the world. World leaders come to the United States. Royalty comes to the United States. All these folks come here for medical treatment so I can't think of what he's going there for." Chief Acevedo says he expects see Clark back in the United States soon and his number one priority is to get justice for Samantha Dean, her unborn child and her family.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin police officer linked to Samantha Dean’s death is in federal custody in Indonesia. A spokesperson for the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office says VonTrey Clark, 32, was taken into custody in Indonesia by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the FBI will determine the timeline for his return. It is not clear when Clark was placed into federal custody.

Last month, Clark was suspended indefinitely when he refused to attend an in-person interview with Internal Affairs.

According to Austin police, Clark flew to Indonesia—a country with which the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty—on July 17, without approval from his supervisors. The Department classified Clark as absent without leave (AWOL) since they weren’t able to get in contact with him.

Clark’s attorney, Bristol Myers said in a statement, “If Officer Clark truly intended to slip out of the United States undetected, there are more clandestine methods than booking an international flight in his own name and using his own passport.”

Court documents revealed in early July details the relationship between Dean, 29, and Clark. Clark told homicide investigators he had “a sexual relationship” with Dean that was “off-and-on ver the last six or seven years, and that he believes he is the father of Dean’s unborn child, Baby Dean.”

Dean was found shot to death on Feb. 4. No one has been charged with murder in connection to her death.

"He was arrested last Friday by investigators in Bali," the secretary of Interpol's national central bureau for Indonesia, Brigadier-General Amhar Azeth, told AFP.
Bali police spokesman Heri Wiyanto said Clark arrived in Jakarta on July 18 on a tourist visa. He was later arrested at a north Kuta hotel.

Indonesia and the United States have no extradition treaty, but Azeth said arrangements were being made for Clark to be flown back to the US on August 13.

That's fantastic news, I guess they didn't want his kind running loose in their country. Come to think of it I don't want his kind running loose anywhere.

Same news as in the Statesman. Nothing confirmed, but this would be such a boost for the case.

The Bastrop County District Attorney, Bryan Goertz, says he is in talks with the Texas Attorney General’s Office about working with one or more special prosecutors in the capital murder case surrounding the death of Samantha Dean and her unborn child.

The longtime girlfriend of former Austin Police Officer VonTrey Clark has issued a statement regarding the investigation into Clark and his connection to the Samantha Dean homicide.

The attorney for Laura Tuten, Polo Gonzalez, issued the following statement on her behalf:
Laura was completely unaware of Mr. Clark’s and Ms. Dean’s relationship and is as shocked as anyone about the allegations being asserted by law enforcement. At this time, her concern is focused on the well-being of her children. We ask that everyone respect her and her family’s privacy during this difficult time.

The girlfriend released a statement after being identified in court documents.
