Dallas mother joins search for son who disappeared days before his new soldier Army orientation

A Dallas mother is desperate to find her son who disappeared while with family in San Antonio days before his new soldier Army orientation.

Cohen said she lost contact with Reyes two or three days before he disappeared.

“He was supposed to go to New Soldier Orientation on Dec. 14 and then on the 15th, I couldn’t reach him,” Cohen said. “I wanted to see how his orientation went. So, I called his dad and stepmom and they said he had gone missing on the night of the 11th or the morning of the 12th.”

Cohen said she then reached out to his Army recruiters.

“They told me he was a no-call, no show,” Cohen said. “I checked his phone records and activities and nothing. He left his phone, his wallet. He left everything behind and that is not normal. He is just gone!”

“There is very little to no leads but the detective on this case has been amazing,” Cohen said.

Texas EquuSearch, a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to searching for missing people, is also assisting the family with the search.

Cohen said she and her family have been searching around bodies of water in the 200 block of Lake Crystal Street, near the home of Reyes’ grandmother, where he was last seen.

Cohen (Samuel’s mother) said his grandmother saw him last and recalled him saying “someone was coming to get him.”

“She reported that the night before he disappeared, he called 9-1-1,” Cohen said. “Police came to the property but didn’t know why. She told them he was disoriented and was hiding in the closet and was saying someone was coming to get him. The only thing I could think of was that he was maybe under the influence or something happened. Like why would he do that? Then for him to disappear with the door open, it makes you fearful that somebody did come and get him.”

Cohen said she was told drugs may be involved in her son’s disappearance.

Cohen (his mother) tells News 4 San Antonio for the last six months her son has been spending time with family in San Antonio. In late November Reyes made a life changing decision by enlisting in the Army.

Just says before his new solider orientation Reyes disappeared. Cohen says on the night of December 11th her son who was staying at his grandmother's house on Lake Crystal on the East Side called 9-1-1 around 11:30 p.m.

"He said he was having a panic attack was having anxiety, he told them that he thought someone might be coming to get him, " Cohen added.

Reyes stayed at his grandmother's home that night, but the next morning just after 7:00 a.m. Cohen says her son was seen on surveillance camera at a church along Highway 87 near Rigsby, about a twelve minute walk from his grandmother's house.

"Somehow he ended up at the church on foot, he was only wearing socks, he didn't have any shoes, he didn't bring his phone, his wallet, anything, " said Cohen.

50 days later and 32-year-old Samuel Reyes’ family is still searching for answers in his disappearance.

He was last seen wearing a black long sleeve hoodie, black shorts, and white socks, but he had on no shoes. His family says he may have been limping as well.

Sunday morning a team of family and volunteers with the help of the Chainbreakers Search and Rescue team searched through wooded areas near Tealer Park hoping to find clues close to where Reyes was last seen.

His family says leading up to his disappearance he appeared to have been having some type of mental health episode. They haven’t heard from his since, and now they’re starting to fear the worst.

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to his whereabouts.

“Sam was very excited about joining the Army. He enlisted the end of November and we don’t really know what’s going on or where he could be but no one has heard anything,” Reyes’ mom Lanay Cohen said. “I know that Sam’s out there calling for us to help him. He wants us to find him.”

Missing since December 12, Reyes was last caught on surveillance camera at a pawn shop along highway 87 on the eastside of San Antonio, not far from his grandmother’s house where he lived.

“There’s been no activity on his phone, bank account, social media, nothing and that’s not like Sam. He always calls me every couple of days even when something is wrong,” Cohen said.

Find Samuel Reyes~Missing From San Antonio, Texas!DiscussionGroup!

A video is included in the post. It’s the last time Sam was seen. It shows him at the church he was spotted at along Highway 87.

I wasn’t aware he actually went into the church. I assumed when it was stated he was spotted passing through surveillance video at a church, they meant outside (possibly in the parking lot or on the sidewalk).

An admin at Find Samuel Reyes FB group provided an update stating their search for Sam has ended, sadly. :( Sam's remains were located approx. 3 miles from his home. There doesn't appear to be any evidence of foul play, although the investigation into his death continues. I've not found official confirmation from LE or in MSM as of yet. My thoughts go out to his loved ones.

Rest in eternal peace, Sam.

San Antonio Police say a missing man was found dead in a drainage ditch wearing no clothes, last week.

San Antonio mother speaks after missing son found dead | kens5.com

@swedeheart thanks for sharing this update.

According to police, on April 21 people were surveying a land on south Foster Road when they noticed a foul smell. Police said the people kept looking and found Reyes inside a drainage ditch with no clothes.

The family still has a lot of questions about what happened.

Cohen said she is doing her own investigating and is continuing to ask questions. She doesn't suspect foul play, but she is not ruling that out. She said the night her son went missing, police showed up to his grandmother's home where Reyes was staying. She said Reyes said something unusual to the police.

"In the body camera footage, he did state in front of the officers, I don't know why somebody did this this to me," Cohen said. "I don't know why somebody gave this to me."

Later on, that December night, he left the home and his family would never saw him alive again.

His body was found very close to the grandmother's home, it is only about three miles apart.
