A new docuseries about the murder of Mexican American singer Selena Quintanilla Pérez is stirring controversy among fans and her family.

The two-part series, “Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them,” which debuts on Oxygen on Saturday, features extensive interviews with the singer’s killer, Yolanda Saldívar from prison. Saldívar was convicted of first-degree murder in 1995 and is serving a life sentence. (Oxygen is owned by NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.)

NBC News has previously reported that Saldívar unsuccessfully appealed her murder conviction in 1998 and will be eligible for parole next year.

Selena superfan turned killer Yolanda Saldívar has filed for parole after being locked up for 30 years for fatally shooting the musical icon.

'Queen of Tejano' Selena Quintanilla-Perez, 23, was murdered by Saldívar, 34 at the time, in a Corpus Christi, Texas hotel room during an argument on March 3, 1995.

Saldívar, now 64, was the president of Selena's fan club and had embezzled $60,000 from the group. The superstar was planning on firing her.

After nearly three decades behind bars, Saldívar has filed paperwork to be released from prison in March 2025.

Inmates at the prison where Saldivar is being held told The Post that she is constantly a target, forcing her to be housed in protective custody.

“Everyone knows who Yolanda Saldívar is,” says Marisol Lopez, who served time alongside her from 2017 to 2022. “There’s a bounty on her head, like everyone wants a piece of her. The guards keep her away from everyone else, because she’s hated so much. If she were out [in general population], someone would try to take her down.”

The woman convicted of killing singer Selena has lost her appeal, a prosecutor said Thursday. Yolanda Saldivar, 38, confessed to the 1995 shooting death of the Tejano music star at a Corpus Christi, Texas, motel. She appealed her conviction, claiming that prosecutors had coerced the confession. Saldivar's lawyer also said a prospective juror was improperly dismissed and that jurors never heard about the criminal record of a key witness. Prosecutor Carlos Valdez announced Thursday that the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston has rejected the appeal. Saldivar, who rose from fan club president to running Selena's clothing business, is serving a life sentence at a women's prison in Gatesville, Texas. She is not eligible for parole until 2025.

To this date, I don't think YS has ever taken responsibility for her actions. Not exactly a good look for an inmate wanting to make parole! JMO...

According to sources inside the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, where Saldívar is currently housed, the convicted killer’s notoriety has made her a marked woman. Former inmate Marisol Lopez, who was incarcerated alongside Saldívar from 2017 to 2022, told The Post that "everyone knows who Yolanda Saldívar is" and the animosity toward her is at a fever pitch.
There’s a bounty on her head, like everyone wants a piece of her,” Lopez said. “The guards keep her away from everyone else, because she’s hated so much. If she were out in general population, someone would try to take her down.
Yesenia Dominguez, another former inmate, echoed Lopez’s sentiments.
Everyone was always like, ‘Let me have five minutes with that b—h,’” Dominguez recalled. “Everyone wanted to get justice for Selena. There’s a target on her back.

According to the Texas DCJ, the parole process includes a review of the offender’s file, including letters of support and protest. The incarcerated person will also be interviewed and an entire summary package will be provided to a parole board to vote on.

If she’s denied parole, she’ll be eligible for parole review again in 1-5 years, according to a Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles who spoke with Corpus Christi’s Caller Times.

Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar. While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.
Selena’s legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit. As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves.
We thank Selena’s fans for their unwavering support throughout the years. Your love has been a source of strength and healing. We will continue to celebrate Selena’s life — not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same.

Yolanda Saldívar, who shot and fatally wounded Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez almost 30 years ago, has been denied parole.

A statement from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles said the reason for the denial was the nature of the offense.

“The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety,” the statement said.

Good. Based on statements reported, the perpetrator sees herself as a victim. After 30 years of incarceration! No acknowledgment of contrition. Zero potential for rehabilitation.

Although I do agree with this decision. I've seen a lot of documentaries where murderers and those that conspire to murder are released during parole. Due to nature of the crime, IMO, none of them should be released. I'm investigating why some are released and some are not. Good behavior should not even be considered, IMO, because they can fake it until they make it out.

Welcome to Ws @Jovial!
Wondering if YS might be safer just staying in jail considering Selena's popularity? speculation.
