Tragic doesn't even come close to describing this case...

I'm very curious about the meds found.

This affidavit does not say he was arrested for the murders, or am I overlooking something? Just wondering whether the media is blowing this arrest out of proportion, and there was no murder arrest (yet)?

He's being detained in Colorado on a capital murder warrant from Texas. He'll be extradited to Texas and get arrested/booked on the murder charges there, I believe.

No, what happened was that Glendale Springs police arrested him for the speeding and no proof of insurance. That affidavit is for that arrest.

Ft Worth police then hurriedly put together an arrest warrant for the murders so that he could be held in CO without being released.

It's interesting how this must have gone down:
1. CV tells CO police that his wife and kid were murdered.
2. CO police call FW police to confirm that story. FW police probably say, he's in CO??? With guns and gas cans in his trunk??? Do whatever you can to hold him until we can put a warrant for murder together!
3. CO police probably said we will do our normal thing but if he bonds out, we have to cut him loose. So you better hurry.
4. FW pull out all the stops, maybe drive with sirens and lights on to a Judge's house to get his signature as he stands there in his PJs.
5. FW calls CO and says we have the murder warrant! CO says oh, he already bonded out... just kidding, he's still here.

Fort Worth attorney Steve Gordon has been hired to represent Craig Vandewege, whose wife and baby son were found murdered.

The timing of the FW PD getting the warrant info to CO LE is pretty amazing. I mean, moments later and he would have been in the wind.

Curious to see the PC statement for the arrest warrant for the actual murders. What a vile monster.

CV had to have been strung out on something. You don't tell a convenience store clerk that you're on the run from police if you're in your right mind.

If he had been able to keep his mouth shut, he would still be free tonight. FW police had not issued a warrant for his arrest yet. Even if he had been stopped for speeding and no proof of insurance, he would have been given a ticket and sent on his way.

But it's sentences like, "My wife and child were murdered a week ago and everyone thinks I did it" that will trip you up every time.

HLN covering it now.

This case is being discussed right now on Primetime Justice on HLN.

Vandewege had his wedding ring & numerous condoms in pocket when arrested. Said he was headed to Vegas.

Definitely NOT a grieving husband!

Does it look like he may have a "healing" black eye?

Totally knew this would be the outcome. Not surprised at all. Beyond sad for SV and DJ's family. His FB pic with him holding the axe was totally creepy. Hopefully he gets the death penalty. Thanks to FWPD. Job well done!

What an evil, stupid sorry excuse for a man. . . Texas will punish him without a doubt.

RIP Shanna and precious baby boy. Prayers for Shanna's family and friends, this will be heartbreak on top of heartbreak for them, I can't even imagine.

Perhaps he sedated both of them with those medications. Would make the puzzle fit with them being in their beds but he was at work during the daytime and called at 9:30 p.m. or he killed them in the night and then went to work, but either way maybe he did sedate them so they never had any awareness. Cruel evil devil.

It sounds like he was preparing for a siege of some sort. Camouflage clothing, gas cans, guns and ammo. That 911 caller in Colorado may have averted a catastrophe.

Some may be confused at the reference to "misdemeanor" above. Every state has an obligation under the Constitution to return to another state, a person who is charged with a crime in that state.

So states have their own "fugitive from justice" laws on their books that are there to comply with the Constitution. Colorado's fugitive from justice law is in itself a misdemeanor; that's not to say that the out of state warrant from TX is a misdemeanor, because it isn't. It's a felony murder charge.

His work is 3 minutes from his home. He could have easily killed them on break or lunch and returned back to work. I'm sure cops probably have him on surveillance video.

  • #378
Yes, the 'fugitive from justice' misdemeanor is separate from the capital murder warrant.

So, I believe that CV's court date tomorrow will be regarding the local CO charges and he'll be transferred to Texas to face the murder-related felony charges.

Do you know for sure that CV worked at the new Costco near his home, Angie? I've been trying to get confirmation of that since the case first broke. But, the only source I can find is SV's dad saying that CV worked at Costco.

I would add "stupid" to your adjectives for him, if your theory is correct. He would have to know that toxicology tests would reveal the drugs in their systems - thus undermining his staging the scene as a murder by strangers.

Besides, he could have skipped the throat slitting altogether, and just overdosed them both until they were dead, making it look like a murder/suicide carried out by his wife.

I guess the other option is that he did drug them to make the murder easier, and then slit the throats to make it appear to be an external murder, knowing he would eventually be caught once the toxicology came back. But that would buy him a month or so of time to walk around free and carry out whatever plan he was cooking up for those items in his trunk.
