She looks very healthy in this picture. She more than likely comes from biological parents who are small.

My little niece is 36" and 26 pounds, turned 3 the end of September. Her mother is 4'11" so we know where the petiteness comes from. This child eats like there is no tomorrow! Healthy foods, lots of fruits and fresh vegetables, and there isn't a food she won't eat.

Wonder if she has been receiving speech and therapy to help her with her delays? I hope so as it is unfair to any child who needs help in an area and the parents don't reach out to obtain it for their child. IMO.

Of course now, we need to pray she is found safe. There is something that LE knows or suspects to have arrested the father. We see too many of these cases of missing young children where the parent is not immediately arrested.

Shades of Malik, and so many others...

Maybe Dad saw her at 3AM, but they didn't realize she was missing until hours later? I know that's not likely, but possibly? I don't like the sound of all this either. Says the Father has been arrested for neglect. (sorry if posted, I am catching up!~)

No one in their right might would leave a young child outside at 3am like that. It's just not what a real parent does. If I saw my 4 year old outside at 3am I would have a heart attack....not ignore him and act like all is well. (No clue what REALLY happened in this case, of course. But it's all kinds of messed up!)

I also had a feeling it was some type of punishment, that could have went wrong. I read this just a minute ago....

"A friend of someone who knows the family said the father was “teaching her a lesson”. She posted that comment on the original post on FB from NBC DFW."

Not sure if this is new info: father arrested for child endangerment (was he solely responsible? Why wasn’t anyone else arrested?). This article says child was seen “beyond the fence”.

http://www.fox4news.com/news/police-arrest-father-of-missing-girl-for-child-endangerment

From above:

"Wesley Mathews is charged with Child Endangerment regarding the disappearance of Sherin Mathews. Her mother has also not returned from questioning at the Richardson Police station and investigators have not said whether they believe the girl was abducted. All three vehicles were towed from the family home.

Sherin’s parents told Police they last saw her beyond the fence of their backyard around 3 a.m., off Sunningdale, near Centennial Blvd.

Neighbor Thi Nguyen says that confuses him, “How can a kid get out of the house at 3? How is that possible?”"

"She's a tiny baby and she's very active. A very smart girl," said Cherian.

He, and other church members, searched the field and railroad tracks behind the family's home, and prayed. As the Sherin’s parents were taken in for questioning, investigators went door-to-door, talking to neighbors and collecting surveillance footage.

"We are doing interviews with them and re-interviewing them and so we're trying to get some more details from them," said Sgt. Kevin Perlich.

"I hope and I pray to God that she is safe and she will be returning home. Somebody please bring back the baby, wherever she is," said Cherian."

I think the father knew she was out there, and left her out there, hence the endangerment charge. Perhaps he was trying to use "tough love" to teacher her a lesson or force her to communicate. Like "If you want in, you need to say 'let me in.'" And then he left her out there, fell asleep, 5 hours later she is completely gone and they call police...

In my understanding, traditional Indian families are highly patriarchal, and the men rule the house. I know nothing about SM's family and how traditional they are, just sharing information. Perhaps SM was being aggressive (sometimes children with communication delays get frustrated at not being able to communicate, or at being misunderstood, and act aggressively) and her father wanted to discipline her?

Interesting point, but Sherin Mathews was adopted. Assuming she is Asian/Indian...are her adoptive parents Indian? If not, they may not necessarily share the traditional Indian views of parenting.

Yes, parents are Indian. Media has reported SM was adopted 2 years ago from Indian orphanage. Investigation online shows family is Indian.

I don't think I want to read the rest of this thread. I'm afraid of what might come out.

I just don't understand.... such a precious little girl. Saved from an orphanage... why? I really hope this isn't going where I think it is. I have several friends who have adopted special needs kids from orphanages.

Snipped by me. Somewhat OT....My son was 7 lb 6 oz at birth, a perfectly uncomplicated pregnancy with a very long delivery. He was always smallish for his age. Speech and language impaired, ADHD (perhaps high functioning Aspergers), seizure disorder.

By 12 his growth (height and weight) stalled so we were referred to an endocrinologist. Diagnosis : failure to thrive. Lots of tests, appetite stimulants. His human growth hormone levels were 10.4 (fda approval for growth hormone shots was 10.0). If we retested he may have fallen within the range, but son wasn’t interested.

As a sophomore in high school, he was 5’1” tall and weighed 95 lbs and wrestled in the 103 lb division. The endocrinologist thought the diagnosis was “constitutional growth delay”. Puberty arrived late, at 17, and growth continued well into his college years.

Fast forward to now. He is 22 and still has articulation issues (mispronunciations, but not debilitating). He’s 5’7” and weighs 150, muscular build, serious facial and chest hair, somewhat socially awkward, just graduated with a BS in Forensic Science. I’m not sure where I’m going with this, other than developmental delays are a tricky thing.

I hope this sweet girl wasn’t harmed - accidentally or otherwise - because of frustration over her non verbal issues.

Thank you for this Elle. It gives me hope for my boy. At his current rate he will be shorter than ME! Maybe if he continues growing through college he will be a bit taller. Prediction with both of our heights was 5"9. Prediction with his growth curve is 5"0. He could qualify for growth hormone based on that, though his testing was normal. Kids stress us out for sure.

I'm wondering if her outside a 3am (putting her outside as punishment) is based on some element of truth. Maybe she still wouldn't stop crying or whatever, and he brought her back in and hurt her, or maybe even threw her in the car and took off somewhere...?

Likely scenario. I think parental frustration at not being able to reach a special needs child may be at the root of things. Perhaps dominant male's frustration at not being able to control her? Just supposition. Any way it went, it is Horrible.
