Dallas police enlist help of FBI after second transgender woman killed in 2 weeks

"Dallas police say they are "concerned" and have asked the FBI for help after a second transgender woman was slain in two weeks. Chynal Lindsey, 26, was found dead Saturday with "obvious signs of homicidal violence," Dallas police chief U. Renee Hall said at a Monday press conference. CBS Dallas/Fort Worth reports Lindsey's body was pulled from White Rock Lake."

"Lindsey's murder comes just two weeks after another Dallas transgender woman, Muhlaysia Booker, was found shot to death on a road bordering a golf course less than a mile from where Lindsey's body was recovered. Booker, 23, had been assaulted in an unrelated incident in April and video of the brutal attack went viral, drawing national outrage.

"We know this is the second individual who is transgender who is deceased in our community and we are concerned," Hall told reporters Monday."

One article raised the possibility that previous victim may have worked in prostitution. If the second victim was also a prostitute, that could be the connection.

As a side note, that general area of Dallas is very diverse income wise and safety wise. Areas in the general location can range from extremely wealthy (old money style), to upper middle class, to lower income but safe, to iffy, to downright dangerous.

Likewise, the characteristics of the various sub areas can change very quickly- almost block to block in some cases and do not always follow the usual progression curve of high income to middle class to working class etc.

"Blogger Monica Roberts writes a variation of the same headline over and over again. “Number 3- Rest in Power and Peace Muhlaysia Booker.”

Roberts is often the first person to report a transgender murder in the United States on her blog Transgriot, in which she has documented violence against the LGBTQ community for the last five years.

But the death of Muhlaysia Booker, 23, in Dallas on May 18 felt different. It was personal, occurring in Roberts’ home state and just three weeks after Booker survived a brutal mob beating.

“Now she's dead and her family is now planning her funeral,” wrote Roberts, who drove 262 miles from Houston to Dallas to attend the funeral of a woman she had never met."
Less than a week later, Dallas police pulled the body of Chynal Lindsey, 26, another black transgender woman, out of White Rock Lake in northeast Dallas. Police offered few details about what happened but said her body showed signs of “homicidal violence.”

"Lindsey was the seventh of eight transgender murder victims this year across the U.S. and the fifth in Dallas in four years. In addition to Lindsey and Booker, Brittany White, 29, was found dead in a car last October; Karla Patricia Flores-Pavon, 26, was strangled in May 2018; and Shade Schuler, 22, was gunned down in a field in 2015. In April, an unidentified 26-year-old transgender woman survived a stabbing in south Dallas.

“At this point, we’ve gotten beyond being sad about it,” Roberts said. “We’re angry here in Texas. We’re angry across the entire state.”

"(CNN)A man has been arrested in the death of transgender woman Chynal Lindsey whose body was found in a Dallas lake earlier this month.

Dallas police said on Thursday that Ruben Alvarado, 22, was arrested "after a thorough investigation."

"Arrestee Alvarado was transported to the Dallas County Jail where he is being charged with murder, a first degree felony," Dallas Police said in a statement...

Lindsey's body was found in the lake on June 1, according to police. She was found two weeks after Muhlaysia Booker, another transgender woman, was found shot to death in South Dallas...."

Dallas Police Make Arrest in Transgender Woman's Murder

"Investigators say Alvarado is refusing engagement with detectives.

Lindsey's counsin, Tamaya Lindsey has a message for Alvarado.

"I just want to know how did you feel about after you realized that you took another human beings life? Or do you just feel bad now because you're caught and you're trying to figure out how to get out of it, which you're not," she said. "And I just want you to know I'll be at every court appearance, even it it's just me."

Earlier this month, police arrested a different man and charged him with the murder of transgender woman Muhlaysia Booker. 33-year-old Kendrell Lavar Lyles was being held without bond in the Collin County Jail in McKinney. Lyles faces two other murder counts in the deaths of Leticia Grant and Kenneth Cichocki.

Booker's father told NBC 5 that Lyles knew both his daughter and Chynal Lindsey."

"DALLAS (AP) – A judge has set a $500,000 bond for a 22-year-old man charged in the killing of a transgender woman whose body was found in a Dallas lake.

Ruben Alvarado made an initial court appearance Friday morning after his arrest Thursday. He’s charged with murder in the death of 26-year-old Chynal Lindsey. Sgt. Warren Mitchell says Dallas police haven’t identified a motive.

Judge to rule whether Muhlaysia Booker will be identified as man or woman during trial

"DALLAS - Lawyers for a man about to go on trial for the assault of a transgender woman say the victim should be identified by their birth gender and name.

In May, Dallas police found Muhlaysia Booker shot to death.

But a month before the murder, the transgender woman was beaten and injured in an apartment complex parking lot.

Prosecutors want the indictment against the assault suspect to read Muhlaysia Booker, but defense attorneys for Edward Thomas object.

The disagreement is over the name jurors will hear and see.

Though Booker is dead, a trial is set for October for the man accused of assaulting her. There is video evidence and there are witnesses.

Defense attorneys argue that if Booker is presented as a female to jurors it tips the scales unfairly against their client, because of bias against men hitting women.

Edward Thomas is facing an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge against "P." Booker,” according to the indictment.

Muhlaysia’s birth name was Pierre.

“In this case, you have a situation where the issue is what name do we put on that indictment, and how do we identify that person,” said attorney Demarcus Ward, who is not involved in this case.

Prosecutors asked Judge Hector Garza to rule the name in the indictment could read Muhlaysia. He said yes.

Defense attorneys object, writing: "Pierre Booker is legally a male by gender. To name him 'Muhlaysia' Booker could have the jury wrongfully conclude that Pierre is female...This is prejudicial against our client ,who is male."

“There could be a big difference for some jurors when there’s a man sitting in that defendants chair fighting for his freedom, and the person on the other end of that thing identified as a man or identified as a woman,” Ward said....

Both sides will argue the merits of their position before Judge Garza next week."

"DALLAS - A Dallas judge has ruled that a transgender woman brutally beaten in an apartment complex parking lot can be identified to jurors by her chosen name and gender....

Prosecutors asked Judge Hector Garza to allow Booker to be identified as Muhlaysia, while defense attorneys for the man going on trial for the apartment complex attack objected.

The state won this round in court, but one law school professor said the issue is much bigger than this trial....

Judge Garza granted the name change request....

Howard added that he expects this issue to go before the U.S. Supreme Court at some point.

The defense lodged a running objection to the judge's ruling, looking to establish grounds for appeal if there is conviction.

This trial is set for Oct. 15. There could be more motions filed before then."

"A trial begins this week for a man accused of attacking Muhlaysia Booker about a month before her death, leaving the transgender woman with a broken wrist and a concussion.Edward Thomas, 29, is charged in the April 12 assault on Muhlaysia Booker.

Police said Thomas was one of the attackers caught on a video that went viral. In an arrest warrant affidavit, police wrote that Thomas was offered $200 to beat Booker....

After the attack — which happened about a month before 23-year-old Booker was found shot to death — Debra Booker said her granddaughter wasn’t afraid, but she did feel angry and betrayed....

Police said at the time of Thomas’ arrest that they planned to review video and audio records to see how many people were involved in the beating and who may have offered Thomas money to beat Booker.

It does not appear any other suspects were arrested in the assault. Dallas police did not respond to questions about whether investigators were still looking for other suspects or why the two other named suspects had not been charged.

On May 18, Booker was found facedown on a street in Far East Dallas. She had been fatally shot, police said.

Another man, Kendrell Lavar Lyles, was charged with murder about a month later....

Thomas has been awaiting trial in the Dallas County jail since May, when he was ordered back behind bars. His electronic leg monitor recorded him at several unapproved locations on May 16, the day he was indicted, court records show. He has been held without bail ever since.
