TX - Unidentified victims of Dean Corll, Houston Serial Killer, 1970-1973

Honest question...how do we solve this mystery if we can't share and discuss the images that were in the envelope?

I haven't really paid that much attention during the 'Clown and Candyman' doc, but wasn't the snapshot from the envelope the olive-skinned boy on the bed? Which Derrick connected to the kid Corll and Brooks picked up in spring 1971? If that's the case, it's pretty easy to come by.

Candidate for Bobby French
"Investigators received a tip in the mail about the decedent possibly being a boy named "Bobby French". The tip also included several photos of Bobby that bore a “striking” resemblance to facial reconstructions made of the decedent. The tip has been looked into, but none of Bobby's family members have been located. The person who sent the tip has also never been located." The package was labeled “Photographs of Bobby French, Dean Corll's eleventh Victim, Taken by David Brooks Approximately Fifteen Minutes Before His Murder”

I have yet to find these pictures published anywhere, nor do I know their contents - it's possible they include the infamous suspected victim strapped to the torture board, as it is effectively public record by now and would make sense with the 'fifteen minutes before' portion, (I suspect they were sent by somebody else investigating the case who was putting forth their theory, though somebody please let me know if these pictures are anywhere) but I digress.

In an effort to find suitable candidates for this Bobby French, I utilized Ancestry. My parameters thus far hinge on the boy being from Texas, which is not certain, and I will be expanding the area of investigation in future. As I am uncertain whether it portends to Bobby French, the torture board photograph was not a disceditor, but likeness was taken into consideration on the chance that it should be. Taking into account that “Bobby” could be short for Robert, Bob, his given name, or a middle name, and with the knowldge that limitations include French being an adopted name, I searched those who fit into the parameters. I narrowed them down by making a list and excluding all those who had a record beyond 1973. This is what I have so far:
(The boy on the right, don't mind Ancestry being weird) Bobby French, born about 1957. His picture was in the Sophmore section of the 1973 Rayburn High School Yearbook, located in Pasadena, TX. The earliest this photograph could have been taken being 1972, this would make it chronologically improbable that he was Corll eleventh victim, and he does not resemble the boy in the infamous photograph, that said it is hard to make out and again, may not even be relevent to this search. He first appears as a Freshmen in 1971:

then does not seem to be included in the 1972 yearbooks, nor the 1974, all of which are on Ancestry. As he was a Freshmen in 1971 and a Sophemore in 1973, he may have dropped out for a year, or gotten held back. Searching his name in lists of alumni, I cannot find him in any graduating year. That said, those are online lists that depend on former students adding their own names, and it’s possible that he has simply not bothered or has died of unrelated causes in the 50+ years that have elapsed.

When I investigated the other possible Bobby French's, I began with their birth record. This was different, as I had only the yearbook photo to go on, which implies that French is not his birth name, or that he was born out of state. A preliminary search turns up no Bobby French born in that year from other states, so it’s possible he was born in a state which has not had their birth indexes uploaded to Ancestry. As of now, I cannot find any reference to this particular Bobby French in the U.S, Index to Public Records, nor the Social Security Death Index. He truly does seem to drop out of public record after 1973. There was a moment when I believed I had located records of him, but this turned out to be a diffrent Bobby French born in 1957. This is by no means conclusive, I can find no birth record nor family backround which would help a lot, but it's an intruging start. I do think he does look somewhat like the recreations of Swimsuit Boy, but perhaps I want to. Either way, he could be an entirely seperate victim, or the facial reconstruction could be flawed, as it's an imperfect art. There are many potential problems with this theory; maybe Ancestary simply doesn't have the record proving he is alive past '73, perhaps I have overlooked some key detail, but he has overcome the most glaring exclusions. I do believe it's suspicious that for all of the Bobby French's I found with records after Corll's death, the person for whom I did not attended school in the area Dean would have moved to in March, 1973. A school that, upon checking with maps, is a 7 minute carride from 2020 Lamar Drive.

If this is the Bobby French supposedly murdered by Dean, he would have been killed sometime during the lull between March and June of 1973. Though Corll was suffering from Hydrocele during part of 1973, I cannot find clear refrence to how long he dealt with it, and have no doubts he procured some boys by himself during the time that Henley relocated to Mount Pleasent in early 1973.
If anyone has information excluding, or adding to the possibility that this boy was one of Dean's victims, please let me know.
I would like to share this information with investigative authorities - first with with either NCMEC or the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, (not sure which I should contact tbh). But does anybody know if any law enforcement are still active on this case, and if so, which jurisdiction I might contact? If this is indeed an unknown victim of Corll, it does not mean they are necessarily Swimsuit Boy and I don't want this information to get thrown onto the heap should it prove useful

@hapka77 you could try DNA Doe Project and ask who their contact person was (before they stopped working the case)? I don't think we know which organisation LE is now working with, do we?

Alternatively you could try the contact that was given out in media at the time DDP took on the case originally:

Agency of Jurisdiction Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences - Deborrah C. Pinto, PhD 832-927-5000 [email protected]

It seems the email address no longer exists - I shall have to do some digging
EDIT I believe I have found the current information

Bobby French is actually Bobby Harold French, Jr. born 7/27/1956 and died 9/11/2013. Found his junior high pic on Ancestry and it is 100% the Bobby French in that photo.

What's the policy on posting photos? After all, he has been gone 12 years almost.
I'll say that I agree it's the same BF, meaning it's highly unlikely he was one of Corll's victims. With that being said, there's no reason to post another photo of him. Unless LE states otherwise, I think we can put to rest any speculation regarding BF and these murders.

On a side note (not directed toward you or related to your post) PLEASE provide links when you're posting information as fact, and refrain from sleuthing innocent persons. Thanks!!

For those asking for specific reports and information, you may find it on a spreadsheet I created a while back. I've not updated it in quite some time and it may not make sense to you, but it was helpful during my research.

New leads in Lise Olsen's new book, 'The Scientist and the Serial Killer

I recommend buying this book, of course (it's more like a chilly scrapbook memory of a time long gone by, skillfully weaving in newer interviews, tidbits of socio-economic analysis, sexual politics, forensic science and conclusions, if you can stomach the heartbreak that bleeds through a lot of it), you can get it here: Amazon.com

New findings:

- another forensic mismatch cleared up, the last unidentified boy (in the official case, that is) is actually Willard 'Rusty' Branch as per new DNA analysis

- at least two more summer/fall 1971 victims (David Waggoner, Pasadena resident near Lamar 2020 & Donald 'Donnie' Falcon, possibly the boy with the swimsuit)

- bones belonging to a (possibly) 9-year old boy found by Sharon Derrick in the boat shed and match a pair of trousers still stored in Pasadena PD, this boy was mentioned as Corll's youngest victim by David Brooks in an off-hand remark to an investigator back in 1973, another search of the shed was not granted despite this, so this and maybe more additional victims will be probably lost to time

- several chilling encounters of youths with Dean Corll (some already known, but elaborated upon, some new to me), which sound much more frightening here and, most alarmingly, are from the late 60's period without Brooks or Henley present, you do the math

- more about Corll's inner circle from that time (Mark Scott's ordeal is detailed even more here, something i certainly didn't need)

- in an eery 1973 recall, one of Roy Ames's pedo partners was shot in 1998 by a young man in a manner similar to Henley shooting Corll

No idea about the child!

I've just ordered up this book; should be here on Wednesday.

Intriguing.

Do you mean Branch was Swimsuit Boy? Or someone else besides Body #12 from the boat shed?

He was mentioned in this archived 1985 article so surely would have been ID by now. Or was there a misidentification of another set of remains along the way?

The latter, the DNA revealed it. Problem was that there were small sets of bones that they could not handle in 1973. With Derrick's relentless pioneer work we know now that the 'real' Swimsuit boy (to whom the swimsuit belonged) was probably Donnie Falcon and Rusty Branch was the unidentified bones thought top be the last victim with no name.

There are still more bones than id's in the cluttered remains from the shed, like the very young boy i mentioned, but i don't think anyone is will put pressure on the owners of the shed to get it researched.

Is there any update on my idea that missing Jay Joggers is the boy on the photo found in the accomplice's camper? I think it was Henley. Even family members thought the boy resembled Jay very much.

Owners of the shed?? That thing still exists??

In this new book by Katherine Ramsland & Tracy Ullman, a whole lot of puzzling questions regarding this case receive answers and what's more, the grooming perspective (Henley was a willing interview participant) gains a much better understanding not only of the (often misstated) timeline, but also of the short, laconic and downright cruel confessions of both young accomplices back in 1973 (it's unfathomable today that there weren't more psychologically probing interviews, but that's the 70's for you).

Some things remain dubious and the book all too often walks the raised-eyebrow edge when it comes to kind-of-absoluting Henley, who somewhat self-servingly repeats his mantra here that he only tried to please Corll. This may be an understandable psychological state for someone in his position after so many years (and he doesn't offer glib excuses), but when all is said and done, there's still an awful lot guilt to take.
Ramsland likely fell for all of Henley's 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬. You can see it in Lise Olsen's new book, about Mark Scott's death. I will take the liberty of drawing up an approximate plan of the entire murder on the basis of this statement with some quotes. The words in square brackets are my additions, which I thought were important comments on the case.

—"Corll thought Mark had been 'talking too much,'' Henley said.

—Mark was tied up and taken to Corll's bedroom.

—Corll held Mark for two nights and one day to torture and repeatedly rape him, Henley said.

—At Corll's command, Henley and Brooks both got high and participated in the sessions.

—"Mark Scott was messed with. He was beaten and burned with cigarettes. All three of us did it. Dean hated him,"

—Henley shaved him because he knew he liked his hair.

—Later, Mark picked up a small knife that his captors had used to cut him.

—There was that famous scuffle when Mark almost cut Corll.

—After that, all three took turns shooting Scott with a pellet gun, and Corll raped Scott again. [This is an important detail, because on the one hand it is a kind of reference to the case when Brooks accidentally shot Mark with a pellet gun even earlier, and on the other hand it finally shows which case led to the appearance of this terrifying detail in the memories of District Attorney Vance]

—Corll decided that Henley needed to "pop his cherry" and do the killing.

—At one point, Mark begged Henley to shoot him.

—Instead, at Corll's insistence, Henley tied a noose around Mark's neck and pulled as hard as he could. Corll ordered Henley to stand on Mark's back and use his leverage to tighten the rope.

—"It’s much harder than you think to kill someone," Henley told Derrick.

—Finally, Henley shot him twice in the head at point-blank range.

—After Mark Scott's murder, Wayne began to enjoy killing. “I killed them because Dean said to. I guess I enjoyed it or just didn’t care anymore or I was just trying to please Dean. It was not something I was forced to do." [A statement that is consistent with Henley's earlier statements (a 1976 interview), but in many ways contradicts his statements for Ramsland's book]

This description opens up new possibilities for analyzing the criminal behavior of all three during the murders, because previously many details of torture and abuse remained unclear. The most important, it seems to me, is the fact that all three participated in the commission of the crime, none were merely present (as Brooks claimed in his confessions).

Ramsland likely fell for all of Henley's 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬. You can see it in Lise Olsen's new book, about Mark Scott's death.

I would rather say you fell victim, but not to Henley's bs, but to the well-established pattern of basing a systematic investigation on an irrelevant question, or in this case a succession of wildly confusing reasonings.

Btw, i tried several times with some goodwill to distillate something, but it only got worse. First of all, what on earth could adding minutiae details to a single murder case possibly help you in "opening up new possibilities for analyzing the criminal behavior" for a serial murder case this sprawling?

All you get is more awful details about the ordeal this poor guy suffered - and there's virtually nothing new here but added details from police reports (which were in essence published long before). Instead you find it necessary to single out lots of incidental details as if they mean something: 'Mark was tied up and taken to Corll's bedroom' - i mean, what's next, the color of Corll's doormat?

You can't just line up lots of newly published incidental stuff and proclaim its mere presence a gamechanger - and then say it contradicts a wildly different psychiatric evaluation spanning 50 years and involving highly complicated concepts like trauma or memory corruption.

But it's not even this, it seems all you took out from this very evaluation (you recall, an examination of grooming dynamics and the unformed brain was a major topic) is to use it as springboard for ripping quotes out of conversations that were never contextualized like you suggest.

'Dean made me do awful things' is not attached to any literal course of action or as a blanket guilt remover, it's a Henley statement loosely used by the author as a bracket term in particular spots of the book to describe a dynamic (it vaguely connotes the sexual sadism, as i recall). We could make a point that she does use such stuff to Henley's advantage a trifle too often, yes.

But what we categorically cannot do is inventing a new bogus case against 'EWH, the Liar' as if you found him saying he didn't strangle Scott or didn't participate in all that torture crap - it's literally all in his 1973 statement - or as if you found a completely new explanation for his behaviour, like EWH was born bad (the most commonly interpretation of the 70's, the decade where they didn't even professionally examine either living participant).

So, after this long diatribe, i am genuinly curious: what do you think is your own motivation to devalue a rather well-reasoned new psychiatric insight (even if you would object to certain phrasings)? Does it bother you the guy may become too humanized by its findings as a result?
