TX - Uvalde; Robb Elementary, 19 children and 3 adults killed, shooter dead, 24 MAY 2022 #3

<modsnip> But people there are very angry and still very angry today at the way Peterson acted. And he did know there were shots being fired - the other guy in the golf cart that was with him testified that he heard the gunfire and left on the golf cart. There were never shots fired outside - Cruz waited until he was in the building and put the gun together in one of the stairwells - and - here's a story for you - another student came into that stairwell while he was doing that and Cruz looked at that kid and told him something like "you need to get out of here now - its going to be bad". That kid took off and was unharmed. It was all over so fast that NC was done shooting - ditched the gun and walked out (blended in) with the other evacuating students. He was arrested like an hour or so later and a nearby McDonald's.

As for PA - what he did - is far way worse than what SP did. And you are right - he was certainly not fit for duty. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

People are tired of this - all of this. Its society's norm to go to the "blame game".

I was 25 miles away - in Broward county - when Parkland happened. I watched it all unfold for days, weeks, - it was scary, and heartbreaking, and agonizing. And, SP was almost immediately thrown to the wolves.

But what PA did - he TOOK COMMAND - SP never really engaged with any other LE on scene. PA made decisions, issued commands, requested assets and/or resources. And now, to find out he disarmed and removed another LE (whose wife was in the room and dying) from the scene. No. To me - and this is JMHO - that crossed the line.
We heard that the teacher (wife) died in the ambulance - so she was still alive even when the breach happened but it had gone on so long that she died en route to the hospital. And there was another little girl reported on - she had been shot in the kidney / back and the doctor told the parents she died of exsanguination (blood loss) - so she could have been saved if they would have breached earlier.

Don't get me wrong - SR is 100% responsible for the death and destruction that day. However, under the command of PA (or lack thereof) in response to that incident caused more deaths than would have otherwise been injuries.

Interesting that the guys testifying now are from the LE licensing board for the state of Texas. Seems they not only want PA's license - they want to make sure he NEVER WORKS IN LE ANYWHERE, EVER AGAIN.

The Attorney General is the one that is going to decide whether or not to pursue PA. It was mentioned in McCraw's testimony about a Grand Jury - but had said that one had not been established yet.

JMHO
PA's license - they want to make sure he NEVER WORKS IN LE ANYWHERE, EVER AGAIN.

I agree he needs to be fired and hopefully sees jail time.

I'm speechless.

What's the truth?

Was Chief PA blatantly, flat-out lying to the Texas Tribune two weeks ago when he made these statements?

Did an officer really put a key inside the classroom door before entering?

June 10, 2022

  • The Uvalde schools police chief said he tried over 26 keys to access the room where the gunman was.
  • None of them worked, he said, and eventually another officer found the right key.
  • His lawyer said the school's key system was kept on a ring "that's got to weigh 10 pounds."
Uvalde schools district police Chief Pete Arredondo told the Texas Tribune that he had called for the keys and a tool to break down the door, which he couldn't kick down because it was reinforced.

While the breaching tool never came, the keys did, per the Tribune. Arredondo said he was given a set of six keys by a janitor, and tried each one fruitlessly on the door of a room connected to where the gunman was.

Another key ring with about 20 to 30 keys was later brought to him, and he tried all of them one by one, he said, giving a total of at least 26 attempts.

[..]

Eventually, Arredondo was informed that another officer had found the key to the room, he told the outlet. More than an hour passed before officers on the scene took down the gunman.

Chief PA lies...and continues to lie. Why?

Here's something I want to throw out there. It was something that was brought up many times yesterday - IIRC even one of the professionals testified about it.

I have my own thoughts about it (and they probably aren't the "most popular" thoughts).

SOCIAL MEDIA

Snapchat, instgram, facebook (but not so much anymore) and the new BIG one tic-tok.

Yesterday they talked about social media. McCraw answered questions about the 15 yr old in Germany that SR had texted the day of:
"I'm going to shoot my grandmother in the head"'
"I shot my grandmother in the head".
"I'm going to go shoot up an elementary school".

This girl did not know SR and it is believed that he didn't even know she was in Germany (not the in US).

This girl called someone she knew in the states and they called authorities (wasn't made clear just who he/she called).

The girl in Germany just blocked SR and went back to sleep. (it was night time over there)

I believe there is a serious problem with this. It has taken over our children (and a lot of our adults too!)

Where I used to have kids say, when I asked, what do you want to do when you grow up? I would get doctor, veterinarian, fireman, teacher and of course the singers, actors, - but in the past 7-10 years that has changed to - and this is the one I get the most - I want to be a "you-tuber" or a tic-tok star or a professional gamer.

Anybody out there want to share thoughts about this?

everyone wants to be famous...15 minutes of fame no matter what they must do to achieve including mass shootings.

Thanks, @WiseOldOwl for the details from the hearing. The most stunning things to me are the lack of the chief's understanding of the building and the whole keys/not trying on door/waiting for them. I have written here before of my professional knowledge of school shootings and protocols for shootings after Sandy Hook. The mayor should be less concerned with selective information being released and more concerned at the abject failure of his police force response and the lack of combined planning between the school board/police/outside agencies. In this day and age there is no reason for these failures to occur on such a grand scale. In the Oxford, Michigan shooting, the failure was school administration not LE. Here we have a cascade of failures that cost the lives of an untold number of injured in those rooms.

They got state and federal money to protect their buildings and programs. I will say that it makes sense to have state/federal guidelines about the training/level of training required/checklist on building requirements in order to receive monies. In this case, they were clearly not up to the task either in planning, training (in person and table-top), and use of outside LE. It is a damn shame.
Both PA & the mayor's days in their jobs are numbered. The mayor can say anything behind closed doors but in public he needs to support all fact finding. Better yet, resign.

Because leaders don't whine. They seek accountability that accepts responsibility even if there are some quibble points.

The mayor should know by now he will never win a PR war. 19 children & 2 adults are dead. There is no PR that can mitigate facts.

Honor the dead by seeking to learn, not add to the public arguments!

Uvalde school police chief on leave after mass shooting

Well well well......................
Seems Harrell is reading the writing on the wall. And, like I said, he (Harrell) is going to walk away unscathed.

At least something is happening.

But I thought the mayor said he is being scapegoated??? Yea right.

“From the beginning of this horrible event, I shared that the district would wait until the investigation was complete before making personnel decisions,” Harrell said. “Because of the lack of clarity that remains and the unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations, I have made the decision to place Chief Arredondo on administrative leave effective on this date.”

A spokesperson for the Uvalde school district, Anne Marie Espinoza, declined to say whether Arredondo would continue to be paid while on leave.

Another officer will assume the embattled chief’s duties, Harrell said.

Col. Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told a state Senate hearing on Tuesday that Arredondo made “terrible decisions” as the massacre unfolded on May 24 , and that the police response was an “abject failure.”

IMHO, the whole leadership needs to go---chief, superintendent, mayor. The lackluster performance on that day is the result of years of poor policy, poor training, and poor performance. There is way too much information out there about protecting schools from a LE perspective and school superintendent/prinicipal perspective. They did not do their jobs. The failures of each of these men were capitalized on/magnified by this gunman. The children and the teachers were sacrificed for their lack of forethought. Teachers complained about broken locks---superintendent/principals. Doors unlocked--superintendent/principals are the budget people and the last word on what gets fixed. Lack of training-- superintendent and police chief as this is their job to budget and protect. Key issue--lack of training which is a superintendent and policing issue. There are too many issues to count for the chief on the day of this massacre. Not a single person in leadership deserves to have a job. The superintendent is very, very well paid. The community can do much better for less money. There are very competent people who can do this job and provide for the students.

You know - Arredondo was at the capitol yesterday testifying while the other public hearing was going on. Remember I said that one senator that got so mad when he was given the timeline - that he left for a while - I an now wondering if that senator went to that closed door meeting and watched PA testify? That could have been where he went. And, I kinda that IS where he went.

I would have loved to watch THAT testimony!!!!!!! Wonder if we will ever get to see it.

I think the child abuse case for the Stoneman Douglas officer who did not act is coming up. This chief needs to get himself some legal counsel and probably needs to plead the 5th. He is at risk for civil and criminal cases to be brought against him.

Those kids, teachers, families deserved so much better from the people who cared for them. For goodness sakes, there were children who called multiple times for the police to come. They did all they could to stay alive and get help for their teachers and friends who were dying.

Apathy. That’s the serious problem I see, as you said - even in adults. Some days I feel like most people I talk to (outside of WS) are more worried about the long wait at the drive-thru for their Starbucks latte than they are about current events.

The Texas Education Agency is reviewing “every aspect” of the Uvalde school shooter’s educational history, according to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath.

Morath testified Tuesday as part of the Texas Senate’s ‘Protect All Texans’ special committee hearing. He told senators the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, became “chronically absent” starting in the sixth grade.

The commissioner said his agency is conducting what is essentially a behavioral threat assessment in chronological order.

“What did we know in sixth grade? Seventh grade? Eighth grade? Ninth grade? 10th grade? 11th grade? 12th grade?” Morath said. “[We are reviewing] all the information, sort of lessons learned, in order to improve the ability to train school systems around the state on recognizing and intervening.”
