Update from the DDP:

"DNA Doe Project Case Announcement: Rebel Ray John Doe – Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas (1988)

Status: Research in progress

Who was Rebel Ray John Doe?
October 3, 1988 the remains of the deceased were discovered in a gully across from a wayside on Highway 29 four miles east of Georgetown, TX. A farmer called the sheriff after his dog dragged the skull into his yard. The estimated date of death was 1-12 months prior to the remains being discovered. The white male, possibly of Hispanic or Native American ancestry, was 27-38 years old, stood 5’2 – 5’5 tall, and had straight brown hair with some gray. His nose had been previously broken and his arms were most likely muscular. Due to the insignia on the hat found near the remains, he has become known as “Rebel Ray”.

Race: White/Hispanic
Sex: Male
Age: 25 to 40 years
PMI: months, likely inside one year

How did I miss this new recon?! I’ve silently followed this case for awhile and never saw the update.

Seeing this reminds me of Victor Howard Gray! A LOT. I’ve always thought he had a very distinctive look but never associated him with Rebel until seeing the new reconstruction! Victor was in the US on vacation from Australia...could that explain why a match has never been made? He also doesn’t appear to have DNA available for comparison but I think it could be Rebel!

I sense that the baseball-cap style probably isn't quite right for an Australian of that age-group and historic time. Australians didn't really start wearing baseball caps widely until much later. I lived in the midwest US at the time this UID was found and when I returned to Australia to live I remember really noticing the lack of caps. And those that did wear them were almost exclusively young, fans of particular music styles, or - rarely - US baseball fans.

BUT as an Aussie I would love to see VHG's case solved. So little is known about what may have happened to him. I had some incidental (and peripheral) work on his case a few years ago and it has stuck with me.

Thank you @Melt71 ! It’s good to have an Aussie’s perspective! Do you think it could have been a novelty type tourist thing?

Very neat to know that you’ve followed Victor’s case! I’ve not researched a lot about his disappearance but his face has always stuck with me. I’d like to see it solved as well. I know he was on a ‘vacation’ but never have known what would keep him in the States for 3 months? (hopefully he has a thread here and we can continue this there)

Since Corona Girl (Sue Ann Huskey) and Orange Socks (Debra Jackson) are both identified, Rebel Ray is now the only unidentified case in Williamson County left. Hoping that his time will come sometime this year.

Interesting to see on the DDP spreadsheet that his admixture came back at predominantly (something like 60-70%) native which in this context I think means native or Hispanic. Which had previously been a footnote in his file "may be of native or hispanic ancestry".

Do you mean Native American Indian/First nation with native and South America / Mexican Indian with Hispanic?

I believe on GED Match the "Amerindian" category covers from South America through Central America & North America native lines - but happy to be corrected. There are a number of specific admixture tools on GED Match for various different population groups - the best description I could find is Which Gedmatch Admixture to Use

** Edited to add that I see on today's spreadsheet update DDP have added another line "Oracle 4" and are uploading the more in-depth data behind the Admixture reports.

Interesting update!

From his Doe Network profile:

He may have lived at or worked as a "handyman" at the nearby mobile home park. He may have originated from Mexico.

Thank you for this info, very interesting. And you too @MadMcGoo, so more likely Hispanic (Mexican).

Yes I believe Amerindian refers to any native race between South America through Canada, I could be wrong though.

Has Erroll Wagner been ruled out? He doesn't quite fit but I can't believe how much the reconstruction looks like him

Update: I've contacted Natalie Murry and while they don't have any immediate records to compare, they'll be getting in contact with GBI to get in contact with family.

I noticed that the tattoo wasn't mentioned with Ray's case, but with Ray's case, apparently his 'limbs' were missing, which I'm not sure what they meant specifically.

IIRC, his skull was found first, followed by other remains. I think.

Weird. Since NamUs lists his remains as 'partial remains with soft tissue', but Doe Network lists him as partial skeletal

I think it just means that they didn’t find all of his bones, but the ones that they did find still had some soft tissue remaining. So maybe they’re both right. Or I’m completely wrong. :D

The DDP has posted a small update on this case: an updated reconstruction and contact details.

I remember it was said somewhere he is from Cherokee nation, but may be this information is not correct. I admit Erroll Wagner looks strikingly similar! Hopefully the comparison will not take long
