A three-year-old Texas girl may be the youngest patient ever to have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which is normally later onset than Type 1 and associated with diet and obesity.

The little girl weighed just over 77 pounds when she was diagnosed. After medical advice to her parents (both obese themselves) she lost 75 per cent of her body weight and interestingly for medical research, the illness seems to have completely reversed and she is now healthy and diabetes-free.

The girl, from a Hispanic family, was diagnosed in Houston, Texas, by Dr Michael Yafi, a paediatric endocrinologist with the University of Texas. In a written presentation to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference in Stockholm, Yafi said she had been brought to his clinic because she was obese.
