UK - 39 bodies found in lorry container, Essex, 23 Oct 2019 *Guilty* #3

We’re launching an appeal for information to find the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ in our investigation into the deaths of 39 Vietnamese nationals who were found dead in the back of a lorry in #Essex.

Marius Draghici is suspected of being part of the network which co-ordinated immigrants’ journeys to the UK both in connection with the deaths and on a number of occasions prior to 23 October 2019.

DCI Louise Metcalfe said: “We strongly believe Draghici is linked to the conspiracy which tragically ripped apart the families of the 39 innocent Vietnamese men, women and children who died on our shores in 2019.

“The actions we believe he is responsible for cannot go unpunished.”

Interesting that they're finally going after Draghici, but they may have left it a bit too late. Can see him being a very well connected/protected criminal to have evaded prosecution for so long.

Presumably back in Rumania. Or A.N.Other country, disappeared as soon as the tragedy struck, and may not have been here then anyway.

I wonder how they publicise the appeal? Truck stops? Haulage companies? TruckNet amongst the drivers? Rumanian press?

Bingo! They have Draghici!

Romanian that led 39 Vietnamese migrants to their deaths is arrested

“Marius Mihai Dragici, 48, has been detained by Romanian police in the city of Bucharest, said Essex Police.

Last month Essex Police made a public appeal to trace the Romanian national, who is suspected of being part of the network which co-ordinated immigrants' journeys to the UK….

…The force said on Thursday that 48-year-old Draghici has been detained by Romanian police in the city of Bucharest.

It follows the execution of a European Arrest Warrant, and an application is now being made to extradite him to the UK.

“Draghici, who also goes by aliases Marius Mihai Selaru and Marius Lupu and was born in the Romanian city of Onesti”

I wouldn’t be surprised if he had had other operators in addition to Hughes and Nica. In Vietnam, Romania, Belgium /France it was a big network only to be feeding the Hughes / Nica operation.

Well done Essex Police, once again.

I wonder if that is the full trial, or a preliminary hearing?

There is still an Irish haulier on the list for trial, Kennedy’s boss.

Can’t read it all .

A plea hearing was set for 3 February next year with a provisional date for trial in November.
Mr Draghici will face trial together with Caolan Gormley, 25 of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, who is charged with a single count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Gormley, 25, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, has previously denied the charge of conspiracy to assist illegal immigration and was not required to attend the hearing.

It is alleged he allowed vehicles in his road haulage fleet to be used to transport migrants into the UK.

During the hearing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC set a further plea hearing for February 3 next year.

A four-week trial for Draghici and Gormley will be heard before a High Court judge.

A trial date of November 6 next year is expected to be confirmed at the next hearing.

Draghici, who spoke only to confirm his identity, was remanded into custody.

Gormley remains on conditional bail.

A career criminal was forced to hand over £630,000 in bling including bullet "artwork" after being investigated over the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants in a lorry.

Thomas Maher, 42, was a suspect in a massive people smuggling investigation in Purfleet in October 2019, after the mass tragedy in a lorry registered in his wife's name.

No further action was taken but it sparked a probe into Maher's finances by the National Crime Agency, which found he was shifting cocaine into the UK and Ireland from Holland using his haulage firm, while laundering cash in Europe.

I think the police cracking the Encrochat network was also key in establishing the extent of his drug smuggling and money laundering. Hopefully his wife can survive on her hairdressing income. ;)

Draghici has pleaded guilty.

On Friday, Draghici pleaded guilty to the charges at a hearing at the Old Bailey before Judge Richard Marks KC.

In 2021, four other defendants were jailed for their roles in the deaths of the victims, two of whom were aged just 15.

Following Draghici's guilty pleas, prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones KC noted the defendant's basis of plea.

Mr Emlyn Jones said he was "disinclined to accept there was no financial reward" for Draghici's involvement even though he could not point to any money being handed over.

Judge Marks remanded the defendant into custody to be sentenced at a date to be fixed.

Defence barrister Gillian Jones KC said her client would prefer to be sentenced "sooner rather than later". “

I wonder where that leaves the trial of Gormley?
