On Thursday, Mr Justice Sweeney sent the jurors out to continue their deliberations at the Old Bailey.

They were told that one of their number had been discharged due to ill health.

The senior judge reminded the remaining 11 jurors that they are under no pressure of time.

If they have not reached verdicts by the close of December 23, they will be asked to return after the Christmas break on January 4, he said.

Harrison, from County Down, Northern Ireland, was also found guilty of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration - a charge that Nica, from Basildon, Essex, admitted, although he denied involvement in the fatal journey.

Two other defendants, lorry driver Christopher Kennedy and Valentin Calota, were found guilty of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

GOOD. Can't wait for the sentencing. It is clear that they had all been making a lot of money for a good long time.

From the Guardian:
"Hughes, an Irish haulier, who alternated between legitimate shipments of waffles, soft drinks and wine from warehouses across Europe and illegal smuggling of alcohol, cigarettes and people. He often undercut other haulage firms to secure legitimate work so he was able to appear to be running a reputable business"

Maybe legit businesses need to look twice when something appears too good to be true. And get on the phone when a consignment arrives having been clearly used for people smuggling.

From Sky:
"Prosecutors are now considering charges against a further three people" I wonder who? Presumably the haulier who was Kennedy's employer? There was another missing suspect, Draghici, but he seems to be missing...and who else?

BBC: Essex lorry deaths: Two found guilty of killing 39 migrants
"Mr Justice Sweeney adjourned sentencing of all the defendants to 7, 8 and 11 January" All 6: Robinson and Hughes, Hanga and Nuzi, who all pleased guilty and the convicted Harrison and Nica.

Heartbreaking detail from ITV: Lorry deaths: 'We didn’t know they were found hand-in-hand until now' | ITV News

BBC NI:
"Kennedy became a lorry-driver in his late teens, despite a number of driving convictions, including one when he was aged 13.
In May 2018, when he was 22, he was stopped in a lorry with the wrong number plate in Belfast and was later issued with an eight-month driving ban"
So Hughes was using dodgy drivers with bans (Kennedy) and drunk driving convictions (Harrison). As if driving a 44 tonne lorry isn't potentially lethal to other road users.

There's Draghici, Gormley and possibly the unnamed man from Northern Ireland who was arrested at Stansted airport? Always wondered what happened to him. There's plenty of other truckers who drove for Ronan Hughes too.

Essex lorry deaths: Wanted man is arrested

A man wanted in Belgium on suspicion of smuggling a number of Vietnamese migrants found dead in a lorry in Essex has been arrested.

The man was located by National Crime Agency officers in the Redditch area of Worcestershire on 15 December.

He is subject to extradition proceedings and has been remanded in custody until a hearing on 12 March.

Four men have been found guilty of their part in a people-smuggling ring that led to the deaths in October 2019.

The arrested man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is suspected of having been involved in transporting at least 10 of the 39 people found dead in Essex, moving them from a safe house in Anderlecht, Brussels, in taxis to a location near the French/Belgian border before they were put on to the lorry.

After hearing the migrants had died, it is alleged the man fled Belgium and initially went to Germany before moving to the UK.

A European Arrest Warrant was issued by a Belgian investigating judge.

Details of the arrest have been released following the conclusion of the trial at the Old Bailey that found Eamonn Harrison, 24, and Gheorghe Nica, 43, convicted of manslaughter.

Christopher Kennedy, 24, from County Armagh, and Valentin Calota, 38, of Birmingham, were found guilty of conspiring to assist illegal immigration.

Ah yes, Stansted Man. Could that be Gormley? I would have to look back at his company details to see how old he is. It said that Stansted Man was from NI.

There was also Dalston Man.

I think Draghici is still missing having fled to Romania?

Meanwhile - Priti Patel, Home Secretary, could have caused the trial to come to a halt through her incompetence. Really shocking.
Essex lorry deaths: Trial was halted after Priti Patel tweet

"On 23 October, Ms Patel, MP for Witham, Essex, posted: "One year ago today, 39 people lost their lives in horrific circumstances at the hands of ruthless criminals."
The trial was temporarily halted as lawyers in the case discussed what action should be taken.
In the absence of the jury, Alisdair Williamson QC, who was defending lorry driver Eamonn Harrison, complained about the description of "ruthless criminals".
He said: "It is unhelpful to say the least and a lot worse could be said." "

This link clearly implies that Gormley engaged Kennedy for illegal purposes:
‘No coincidence’ ejected migrants were among 39 later found dead, court told
"But he insisted he thought they were loads of cigarettes after agreeing with his boss Caolan Gormley to earn some extra cash"

This link says Gormley had been arrested and released:
"Team player” Kennedy, from County Armagh, was another of Hughes’ drivers, even though his actual boss was Irish haulier, Caolan Gormley, who was arrested and released under investigation"

But details of company directors indicate that Gormley is only 23, so too young to be Stansted Man, who is reported to have been interviewed and released.
