Aaron Campbell found guilty last month

Sixteen-year-old Aaron Campbell was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow last month following a nine-day trial.

He was unanimously convicted of murder despite having claiming to have nothing to do with the girl’s death.

Campbell could not be publicly named during the trial due to his age, but judge Lord Matthews lifted the ban following the guilty verdict.

Alesha was days into her summer holiday with father Robert MacPhail, 26, and grandparents Angela King and Calum MacPhail when she was snatched by Campbell, who tried to blame her father’s girlfriend for the crime.

Despite Campbell’s denials, CCTV from the killer’s mum’s house proved he left home at the dead of the night at the time of the killing.

Alesha suffered more than 100 separate injuries and died from “significant and forceful pressure to her neck and face”.

How Alesha's killer was named by judge

Judge Lord Matthews allowed Campbell to be named after he was convicted of one of the “wickedest, most evil crimes” Glasgow’s High Court had ever heard.

Defendants under 18 cannot normally be publicly identified, but the judge made an exception after twisted Campbell was convicted.

Newspapers had applied to be allowed to name Campbell because of the horrific nature of his crime.

Lord Matthews said: “I can’t think of a case in recent times that has attracted such revulsion.

“I intend to grant the application. The press may name the accused and publish images of him.”
