I notice one of the articles mentioned that he is/was unmarried, which is very unusual for a man of his age in the Muslim community, and it seems likely that he has never been married since there's no mention of any children missing him. I was wondering therefore whether he is/was gay and struggling with that in a Muslim family and community. That might not necessarily lead him to suicide, but rather to move to a non-Muslim area of the UK.

The other thought that crossed my mind was whether he had decided to leave Islam but felt he could not do that in a Muslim family and community. Apostates from Islam can find themselves in physical danger if those around them adhere to the strict Islamic requirement for apostates to be killed.
Surprisingly forward thinking of Ali's family to even consider (and voice) the possibility of trouble not just with a female, but also a male, imo.
‘This disappearance is completely out of character. We’ve been asking: “Was there a girl? Was there a boy?” But there was nothing like that.''

Agreed, but even if the parents are relaxed about the possibility of Ali being gay this doesn't mean that the rest of the family are. It's not unknown for "enforcement" of expected norms to be driven by members of the wider family.

We see this in some cases of girls resisting arranged/coerced marriages, where the parents accept the girl's position but her brothers and uncles, the latter often egged on by aunts and the uncles' wives, engage in seeking to impose the family's choice on the girl. Boys/sons are in a stronger position to resist social norms but they are not immune.

We know that apostates from Islam tend to feel under sufficient threat for them to keep their apostasy secret from family and the wider community, often "coming out" only through online forums and communities and behind pseudonyms.

Do we know he is Muslim? I haven't seen it explicitly mentioned in the articles. I might have missed it though

No, we don't know he's Muslim, but the names mentioned for members of his family and the fact that his mother wears a hijab makes that very likely.

Hey,

Just to confirm yes he was a practicing Muslim.

He was also a graduate around 10 years ago and had quite a decent career in data science before leaving a company a few years back. He had some smaller jobs in the interim
But had been out of work a while.

He was super smart, and very tech savvy.

I think about him alot, this is very out of character.

It sounds as though you know Ali personally - is this the case? If it is, do you know of any tensions between Ali and his family?

I'm curious as to why someone with a degree and some years experience in data science was out of work. I would have thought that that area of IT would be very much in demand.

The job market has rapidly changed over the past few years, even in IT. Companies are laying off and having hiring freezes, and people searching for a new position have a lot of competition. Any advertised position is going to see hundreds of qualified applications. This is a difficult time to be out of work seeking a new full-time position. IMO.

I do know him personally. I was his manager and friend for many years.

We kept in touch after he left us - he left to recover after some medical issues. They were all resolved in the main in the coming years.

He had become a little picky on which organisations he would join due to his beliefs which had limited his career options more recently. He was very commerce thinking so doing his own business made sense.

Knew nothing of any tensions with family but never really discussed it.

A mother has made an emotional plea for help in finding her son six months after he disappeared.

Ali Durrani, 32, of Stirchley, Birmingham, was last seen on 6 February in the Northfield area of the city.

At a police press conference on Tuesday, his mother Mahjabeen Durrani said the family had no leads on what had happened.

Supt Susan Mabbett, from West Midlands Police, said Mr Durrani was last seen on CCTV at 17:30 GMT on Middlemore Road, Turves Green, at the same time as a woman with a young child and a black and white dog. She urged the woman to contact police.

Two days ago the police released the above article/appeal.

It was shared by West Midlands Police on their page and on facebook.

On the facebook 3 separate people claimed sightings that day in the same location near his home, sleeping rough potentially. The police contacted them and they posted they’d spoken to the police.

I assume the family immediately went to the mentioned area.

I checked today for an update on the facebook/police web page and the article and all history had been removed from
Both.

I hope this means he was found, but no way of knowing I guess.

West Midlands Police have released CCTV of a dog walker they wish to speak to as they continue to search for missing Birmingham man Ali Durrani. It is believed she may have been the last person to see Ali, who was last seen on February 6 2025 (Image: WMP)

''A vital update has emerged in the investigation into the disappearance of a Birmingham man.

Ali Durrani, 32, left his family home in Stirchley on February 5 after telling his mother he was going for a walk - he has not been since.

West Midlands Police are now appealing for a Birmingham dog walker to come forward as it is thought she is one of the last people to potentially have seen Ali the day after he disappeared.''

"We are appealing for a female with a dark jacket, walking with a young child and a black and white dog.

"We would really appreciate if she could get in contact."

''We also issued a picture of a woman walking a dog who was captured in the last CCTV sighting of Ali.

Thanks to the appeal, we have now identified the woman and our officers have spoken with her.

The 32-year-old was last seen around Middlemore Road and West Heath Road in Northfield, Birmingham, on 6 February.''

We ask that if you have any information, or if you believe you have seen Ali, to get in touch with us.

You can contact us via Live Chat on our website, or you can call 101 quoting PID number 452099.

We have also never been able to find Ali's phone. It was thought to be in the area around the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. It is a light-coloured iPhone 12, and we are hoping someone may have seen it or has the phone. If you find it, or even if you have the phone, we are asking that you hand it in. It could be vital to helping us find Ali.
