UK UK - Alice Byrne, 28, last seen around 2am after beach party, Portobello, Edinburgh, 1 Jan 2022

  • #161
In the latest update from police, Inspector Keith Scott said: “It is out of character for Alice not to keep in contact with her family and friends. We are becoming increasingly concerned for her wellbeing and we are working to trace her as soon as possible to ensure that she is safe and well. Searches and enquiries have been ongoing since she was reported missing, and we are now asking the public for any assistance they can provide.

Here's everything we know so far about missing Alice Byrne as search to enter third week

bbm

Does that mean they do want the public to search for her now? Having previously asked them to stop?

What does that mean?

I hope they haven't killed their own enquiry's momentum.

I think they are asking for information not searches.

Like...Do you know anyone that attended the party? Share any common friends? Hear a rumor about the party? That’s what I think they are asking the public to provide. JMO

Was this her usual group of friends?

How did she find out about the party?
When did her phone break?

I think you are right.

I dont believe they would encourage members of the public to physically search at this point.

There was a kidnapping and rape in Portobello in 2009 and an attempted rape in November of 2021. The reporting on the second incident is shocking. I know the woman that was attacked and she is clueless as to why it is was reported as an "isolated incident" as they usually say that when the attacker is known to the victim. He wasn't. He didn't try to rob her, his intent was clear. He also hasn't been caught. There's also this assault from July of 2021. I think I could go on and on the more I look...

I'm strenuously hoping though that Alice has just gone on a mental health walkabout like a friend of mine did a few years back since all these other incidents happened late at night or in the wee hours.

13 registered sex offenders in Portobello alone. Which is a large number in a very small area (town)- anything could have haven't to this young lady. I don't feel in my gut (imo) she walked into the water...

It she did travel away from Portobello there weren’t many options available at that time of the morning on New Year’s Day. If she travelled by bus there would likely be some footage from the high street and definitely from the bus itself. If she travelled by taxi they would have seen the reports by now and mentioned it. Car is a possibility but then that would mean someone else knows where she went.

I just can’t understand how she could have disappeared into thin air in this part of town. I do wonder how confident police are that she definitely left the last known location at that time.

She couldn't have gotten on a bus with no money plus all bus services & taxis have been approached by police.

I did a google earth search of Marlborough St. (Just to see what it looked like AND the walking distance to the beach if she did head that way.

It's only 713 feet to beach entrance. I do not know what apartment she was in. So I just measured from beginning of Marlborough to beach entrance...that is not far.

The second pic is street view of walking down the street heading to the beach.

I am shook by the amount of apartments. The narrow street. If she had screamed I imagine someone would have heard her??

If she was sleep deprived or maybe hung-over it certainly would have added to her dampened awareness levels. (imo)

<modsnip: referenced post removed>
Ms Byrne, described as ‘vulnerable’ by a friend, was last seen wearing a long black T-shirt, black jeans and an orange/mustard hoodie.

If police had used that word, yes, I think the official definition - whatever it is in the UK - would have been helpful, but this was a friend speaking very early on.

Yes, and the distance from the doors of the houses (as opposed to the blocks of tenement flats) to the street is close enough that any Ring cameras would potentially pick up a clear image of those passing by. I would be stunned if nobody had cameras.

The area of the beach at the foot of the street is also likely to have been the busier part of the promenade. Busier by 8am standards anyway. The area between Bellfield Street and Figgate Lane is where most people tend to gather with the busiest area being the foot of Bath St.

There is a lane that runs off Marlborough Street as well which goes to Regent St.

True, and if she had a bus pass they would have found a record of it being used.

The Lothian buses CCTV is brilliant and has been used in loads of criminal cases. If she was on one they would have spotted her. No doubt about that.

If she made arrangements to go somewhere by car she would’ve had to do it using someone else’s phone, or go with someone who was at that same party. Alternatively, she could have taken a lift from a stranger outside but that seems unlikely, although not impossible.

Thanks. Aside from that being a definition from another country, it also wasn't a person speaking in an official capacity who labelled her vulnerable, it was a friend, who probably wouldn't have been using an official definition when she used that word. She would have been using the word colloquially.

IIRC it wasn't just a friend it was also family members.

This may seem silly, but 2 am after a beach party, where might a girl step aside to use the facilities if she could not hold on till arriving wherever she may have been heading ? speculation, imo,
