UK UK - Amanda Jane Hull, 42, Droitwich, 7 January 2025

  • #21
I live fairly close to where Amanda went missing from, and we have several mutual friends. The CCTV footage leaving Paddington Station on foot on 7th Jan, shows Amanda carrying the sleeping bag she bought in Worcester before boarding the train. If she bought a sleeping bag, this would suggest she didn't have any plans to stay anywhere. This has now been 5 nights, all in sub zero temperatures.
On the official FB missing page, people have suggested that maybe she wanted to see something specific in London, and didn't think beyond this.
She is now 5 days without any medication also ....

In your opinion, would Amanda have just slept on the streets in her sleeping bag or would she have realised how cold it was and headed to a hostel or shelter?

Not knowing Amanda personally, my judgement on this would be made by what family/friends have said. She was the last to leave the train at Paddington. Several commenting have suggested that she would've been sat scared not knowing what to do. However, the CCTV footage showing her walking out, doesn't show obvious distress. For example - if she'd spoken to someone working on the train/station, they could've helped. She is apparently quite talkative and wouldn't be scared to approach people to chat.
It is possibly worth knowing that her Father died a few years ago, and her FB posts clearly show how much she misses him. Her FB is public, I'm not a FB friend.
Christmas can be an emotionally charged time. It is noted that last time she disappeared it was when her father was very ill. Apparently he did travel to London for treatment, and would've taken that train from Worcs to Paddington.
As I say, this is speculation - but trying to give a picture.
With an ASD diagnosis, Amanda may not have thought beyond buying the sleeping bag and getting on the train .... and by now the lack of medication would surely be showing in her behaviour.
I am hoping that as CCTV is widely available in London, we will have a better picture by the end of the day?

Thanks for replying.

Did Amanda take much money with her do you know? What sort of places would she be likely to visit to get something to eat? For instance, would she head for the nearest McDonald's?

On Amanda's official FB missing page earlier, it said that she may have been seen in the Notting Hill area of London, although no details of when this possible sighting was are mentioned.

Latest Update:

Her family and friends have been walking in London – in the surrounding areas of Paddington Station. Hostels, shelters and churches have been visited by family members and charity organisations, such as the Salvation Army, have been contacted about Amanda’s disappearance. The Metropolitan Police – responsible for policing in the Capital – have also been contacted.

Reference has been made in the FB group to the fact Amanda went missing back in September 2024 and was found in Birmingham. For whatever reason, Amanda seems to want to be more independent, travel, live elsewhere?

Right now it’s important to find Amanda to ensure she’s safe and well. However, she has the same rights as anyone else to live her life in a way and with a support system that works for her. Her phone being left at home suggests that she wasn’t keen to stay in touch with anyone when she left.

This is jmo and ime but Amanda may have capacity and understands her choices and consequences they may have. This can be difficult for family members/friends/professionals to accept and navigate, when naturally those people want to protect someone who is considered vulnerable. Amanda leaving her phone at home, buying a sleeping bag and buying a train ticket to Paddington independently would imply that Amanda knows what she wants, where she wants to go. She's thought things through, has planned , retained this information and also acted on it.
I do not know Amanda, her family or any professionals that may know or work with her, so couldn't say that this is the case 100% but, on the surface this is what it appears to be.

Hoping Amanda is located safe and soon.

imo, jmo and ime

It might be that however much she wishes to be independent ,she actually does not have the necessary skills to look after herself and therefore is extremely vulnerable away from her family

Exactly this. I do have considerable experience working with people with a learning disability and there is often conflict between what others deem best and what an individual wants.

As a society we tend to infantilise people with a learning disability/complex needs and we label people as ‘vulnerable’ when it suits us, yet that doesn’t necessarily lead to providing support that might empower people to live the lives they want.

None of this is necessarily true in this case, however, and I reiterate that at this stage it’s about finding Amanda and ensuring she is safe and well.
All jmo.

Excellent news - Amanda has been in touch with family via the police and should be back home tomorrow. I doubt that we will find out much more, but I am sure we’re all relieved that she’s been found and appears to be ok.

Facebook update:
Amanda has been in touch
Carol has been visited by the police this afternoon and we understand that Amanda is going to be coming home tomorrow. They wouldn’t give us any further information at this stage but the important thing is that she got in touch.

(Carol is Amanda’s Mum.)

If she's in Redditch then she could have headed to the train station or nearby bus station, maybe even the Kingfisher shopping centre?

I wonder why she spent the night at a Premier Inn in Redditch last night instead of going home to Droitwich?

Why wouldn't they just take her home as they were nearby, even if it was getting a bit late. Makes no real sense. But she seems intent on going awol.

Surely the social worker was aware of Amanda's risk of going awol and should have ensured that she was not able to go missing from the hotel.
I suppose lessons will get again be learnt.
