Driving near the coast here in Wales at sundown this evening, and a car was waiting to join the other carriageway opposite me - it looked grey at the sides as it had a fine coating of dust and the only light coming from the sky was such that it picked up the dust colour only. As it turned I could see that it was metallic dark blue. So this colour COULD POSSIBLY look grey just at sundown, but certainly not white, imo.

Drove down A487 after this just as it became dark. Road closed through Ceinws and down that side of the valley. Access for local residents and business only.
On the whole LE presence in Mach (that I saw) this evening consisted of 4 police vehicles - one a minibus of police, but search centre (sports centre) was quiet - but this was after it went dark. Not sure if searches are carried out at weekends now. River level v low.

Drove around Bryn Y Gog estate. Distance from A's house to garages is much shorter in real life than looks on streetview. Actually not far at all. Unsurprisingly, no children around at all. The streetlight is an older coloured orange one.

Was the A487 closure through Ceinws due to search?

Thanks for all the excellent local info you post here - it's gold :-)

People were out looking for him specifically at that point as the left hand drive thing was made public earlier in the day. CS lives on Bryn Y Gog estate - waaaaay too far for just walking with a friend, imo. I think she and friend were searching - as were ALL the people for MILES amd MILES. I can't express the extent of public participation in this from around 8pm Monday evening (1st Oct). On Tuesday when CS saw the man with a black bag, searches were being carried out all over the town and surrounding area. She was searching (and happened to be chatting to her friend when the man appeared on the shale) and not out for a walk.

I reckon you're right on the money here, as you say, people were out from the Monday night, and lots were not locals but people who heard on the news or through social media. CS is friends with VF so she would have known who to look for.
Just can't imagine what would go through your mind in this situation, someone you know, was in relationship with your friend, local and dad. It must be like a very bad dream.

I took another virtual walk around the the (Police cordoned-off) quarry area I linked to in post #351 and saw that if a person was going back to town on foot from the quarry area they would probably take a short cut via this steep shaley patch to get down onto the minor road that leads down the valley to Mach. Now THIS looks familiar. I think this is where CS and her friend saw the man with the black bag.

2nd image here looks like it, and 3rd image shows a tree in similar position, imo:

I had my doubts, partly because it says in the accompanying article that the slope "leads down to the river", but yes, in the second image there are two saplings forming a 'V' (in the background) above the head of the policeman in the foreground, going off the top of the picture. The same are visible in street view. Could be coincidental,of course.

It's not the "gulley leading to the water's edge",though, that Carwen Sheen describes as there is a field and the road between the pictured slope and the river.

I agree that the women's position is a bit of a puzzle.

The third photo seems to be taken from the air.

Also agree that no one was likely to be simply "out for a walk" on that Tuesday morning.

Search teams looking for missing Machynlleth schoolgirl April Jones are to set up a more permanent base in a nearby industrial estate in an attempt to return the town “to some level of normality”.

April has not been seen since she was spotted getting into a vehicle as she played near her home on the town’s Bryn y Gog estate on October 1 – four weeks ago tomorrow.

And ever since the five-year-old disappeared, the Mid Wales town has been swarming with police and specialist search and rescue teams.

For the first two weeks the market town was also under intense media scrutiny as journalists from as far away as Japan came to report on the youngster’s abduction. More than 225,000 stories have appeared in the world’s press, Dyfed-Powys Police’s Chief Constable Jackie Roberts has said.

But now, the officer in charge of the search, has told WalesOnline the operation’s headquarters is to move to an industrial estate just outside Machynlleth.

It could just be that the photographs show a different search area. It reads as though it's the place reported by Ms Sheen, but as we all know, the media often get things wrong.

Thanks LB :)

It was after sundown and any search activity (if still happening there at weekends) was not taking place. The road closure seems to be a deterrent. If I had really wanted to I could have moved aside the signs and bollards and gone that way, but I didn't want to risk driving straight into the LE, though there was no sign of them that I could see. There were loads of house lights on in Ceinws. The leaves have fallen from the trees and I could see from the A487. I had previously expected it to be a place where many of the homes were summer holiday homes, empty for much of the year (like so many here in small communities in Wales), but actually was surprised at the amount of people there.

I think jigzy meant that the minor road was closed, not the A487. Ceinws is not on the A487 but on a smaller road that branches off from the A487 further south. It runs parallel to it, but on the other side of the Dulas.

Drove down A487 after this just as it became dark. Road closed through Ceinws and down that side of the valley. Access for local residents and business only.

Just over the top of the slope is the quarry that was closed off that I posted links to recently. Also a yurt company. Just to the right of the slope is a brook that goes under the road and down to join the River Dulas.

Not sure if searches are carried out at weekends now.

Yes, according to Dyfed Powys police, searching is continuing this weekend: "17 teams out searching with 10 CSI [Crime Scene Investigation] dogs and a range of equipment".

(Source is the police's own Twitter feed)

Thank you, that is extremely interesting.

Just to say again thank you especially to jigzy and veggie (and other locals if I forgot you) for your posts which add so much to this thread. We know that what you post is accurate and it is detail which we would not otherwise have and which is invaluable to form an overall impression of the case, and of course the ongoing search for the little lass. :-)

News today from Melbourne -

JILL Meagher's accused killer was recovering in hospital after severely injuring himself while on remand at a maximum-security prison.

The Herald Sun understands Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, had surgery during the day after injuring himself in what was thought to have been an attempt to take his own life.

Mr Bayley was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital's secure unit after being found bleeding requiring surgery for extensive wounds.

A Department of Justice spokesman confirmed an inmate had been taken to hospital suffering what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries, but would not reveal the identity of the prisoner or extent of his injuries.

Mr Bayley, of Coburg, was charged with the rape and murder of Ms Meagher after she disappeared while walking home from a night out with friends in Brunswick on September 22.
Meagher's death sent shockwaves through Melbourne resulting in unprecedented displays of public grief, which psychologists have likened to those shown for Princess Diana.

I think you've posted this in the wrong thread .....

No, I intended to post it here because there is a parallel between both accused which is the huge public interest in the cases and hostility to the accused - not only at court appearances but mainly the social media response including 'hate' pages set up on FB etc. and threats to family of the accused.

Yes, according to Dyfed Powys police, searching is continuing this weekend

I have to say I'm full of admiration for those search teams. With temperatures not far above freezing in the last few days, it must be bitterly cold on those exposed hillsides.

I wish there was another charge in the UK Crimes Act apart from the 'perverting the course of justice, concealing a body' that MB is already charged with, something like - 'tormenting family and endangering the lives of searchers (two and four legged) due to being a mongrel and not revealing where victim is'.
Not to mention taking valuable police and other resources away from every other place they are needed.
Volunteers are away from their family and jobs, employers are without the staff member, these search organisations rely mostly on donations and fundraising to cover operating costs.

Have to put it in proper legal terminology of course but you get my meaning.:banghead:

Any offender who does this for whatever selfish and warped reason and is subsequently found guilty does not deserve one millisecond of mercy.

Unfortunately, with the clocks going back, leaves falling off trees and icy weather forecast for the near future, searching for any evidence will become increasingly difficult - to impossible.
