GUILTY UK - Ashley Wadsworth, 19, Canadian, murdered 1st Feb 2022, Chelmsford, Essex *Arrest*

  • #81
Does he mean he didn’t want her to talk to them and she was using alternative accounts to reach out? Ugh

Also
“But Seaman said Wadsworth had recently been reaching out to him and friend groups across North America, who were putting her in contact with people in England "that could help her and work with the authorities."

Uhhhhh that’s scary.
I also took it to mean that despite the typo. For her to have been a recent convert to LDS is telling. She probably had a messed up life and then she found this thing that was really great for her and she wanted to share it with someone else she thought also just had a messed up life but he turned out to be a messed up person

She probably wanted somebody to also convert along with her and the two of them to enter into the church as a completely new church family but he saw the church as a bunch of people (whom she really liked) competing with him for her attention. I hope everyone on both sides of the ocean get their pound of flesh from this guy.

Seems a lot of press have chosen to use the picture of him with what looks like a black eye
Well there’s something definitely unique about his eyes…almost lizard-like. IMO

I can't work out if this young lady was naïve, or if she was groomed online, then taken advantage of by a really nasty piece of work. Maybe a mixture of all of them.
She was too young to die, he is too young to be a killer. What a sorry case it is.
RIP.

Just horrible. I’m not an expert on the Mormon religion but I don’t think they approve of sex before marriage.
Now maybe they weren’t having sex, but she was living with him in his apartment. Something just seems fishy when they say she wanted to meet him to teach him about her religion. IMO

ITA & was thinking the exact same thing! And she was originally planning to stay w him for 6 months…..that just can’t be a good idea no matter what. I doubt he was terribly interested in learning about her religion either. Could be totally wrong but jmo.
How flippin sad that he killed her…..she was going home this week fgs!

This is just an awful case. One of her friends, in a tribute, said that she'd had a hard life.

So then we have a situation whereby that young woman has an online relationship with a young man in another country and then making that huge decision at only 19 to live with him.

I feel desperately sorry for his family too. Based on Ashley's FB page photos, they did their best to make her feel welcome.

"Her friend Ana-Marie Taylor told DailyMail.com that Wadsworth initially planned to stay with Sepple until April after arriving in November, but recently changed her mind and was set to return Thursday.

'She cut it short because things were not going too great,' Taylor said, who added: 'She really did love him. Things were amazing at first.'

A neighbor in Chelmsford told DailyMail.com that Ashley's family had actually paid for her plane ticket to return to Canada - which would have been on Thursday - after she had called and told them she wasn't happy staying in Britain.

Taylor said she was not aware of any abuse in the relationship, nor did she elaborate on why their relationship began crumbling. She said the couple met online in 2020; according to other reports, this was the first time they met in person. "

"Her boyfriend Jack Sepple, 23, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court today charged with murder.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the short hearing.

Sepple was remanded in custody to next appear at the same court on March 7 for a plea hearing.

A provisional trial date was set for September."

He seems to have a "bulging eyes" syndrome.
It usually indicates problems with thyroid.

I think it’s a bit of both as you say. I think he knew she was kind and willing to help and took advantage of her good intentions to rope her in and get whatever it is he wanted. And I think she was naive about how unhinged some people can be. I think she genuinely thought that what had worked for her (religion) would work for him, but didn’t realise that some issues need professional intervention, and he wasn’t just troubled but also violent. Which again, is probably part of his manipulation. Being a long distance relationship, he could have embellished things and only tell her what he wanted her to know.

This really sucks because I believe that she had nothing but good intentions and he exploited that until she said no more.

Obviously this is just speculation, I don’t know what really happened, just my opinion based on the info that is available.

I wish she had known about Clare's Law.

That’s the law that allows you to request information about previous domestic violence right? Do we know if he had previous convictions for domestic violence? Or does it work with arrests too?

Man, 23, accused of murdering his Canadian Mormon girlfriend is set to go on trial in September | Daily Mail Online

Sepple, dressed in a yellow and blue prison-issue tracksuit, today sat with his arms crossed across his chest and spoke only to confirm his identity via video link during a seven-minute hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Is there a reason he was in yellow and blue prison issue tracksuit rather than the more usual grey?

It seems to be happening almost routinely atm, even though it's supposed to be an extreme measure for prisoners specifically assessed as likely to try and escape. I think it's to do with Covid and prisoners at court having to be kept in rooms that aren't optimally secure, for distancing reasons. Wherever possible, prisoners are appearing by videolink atm, but a first appearance at crown court has to be in person iirc.

The report stated that he did appear via video link.

The report stated that he did appear via video link.

I'm surprised, as first appearances are usually in person afaik, but perhaps that's a Covid thing too. I would read that as meaning that access to the videolink suite at wherever he's being held involves moving around the building in a way that gives concern about an escape attempt.

I don't have firsthand knowledge of this, but I think it can potentially include any information held by police or any of the agencies they collaborate with. It's usually described as "any information about a partner's violent history" or "violent past" so is quite loosely defined, and might include previous convictions or charges, or even arrests and allegations. Information held wouldn't necessarily be disclosed though, so, hypothetically, an allegation dismissed as malicious wouldn't necessarily be allowed to keep popping up automatically.

That's my understanding anyway.

Regarding what went wrong, I assume they both had the best of intentions - but perhaps their intentions were not aligned. She became a mormon last March. She was in regular contact with the friends from Utah who introduced her to those beliefs.

It sounds like she intended to introduce him to her mormon beliefs and friends. We know from the article posted here yesterday that he did not want to communicate with those friends.

It sounds like his intention was a life together, where he introduced her to his family, his country and culture.

If he wanted a future together and she wanted him to meet her mormon friends and adopt her beliefs - depending on how earnest they were with their separate intentions - that sounds like a potentially volatile situation. He might have said that he has given her everything she wanted, other than joining her mormon friends, yet she's still leaving. There's the conflict that resulted in murder.
