Yes it does sound like leakage of the truth into lie. When I first read this it seemed to me that it may have meant 'out in the open' fields, as opposed to be sheltered in any other setting.
That is an important point I think. For a family so immersed in social media, they didn't even bother to post a missing person which you would do as soon as she didn't come home late on the 18th. I'm a member of lots of facebook local groups and there are regular requests for 'have you see

? His parents have not seen him since 10am last night' only to get to the end of the comments and he's already been found. They did none of that. Didn't phone round, didn't knock on doors, didn't have her older siblings out checking, didn't enlist friends and family, absolutely nothing until 21st when they asked the Police if they should put something on social media. These are two people who either didn't give a **** about BW's welfare or didn't want to waste their time. We kind of guess why ScW would be thinking like that but the sacred bond of mother and child appeared to mean nothing to SaW. Having said that, I left home at 17 and never returned unless I wanted something. I was very capable of looking after myself. BW was an introvet and socially awkward, and disappeared with nothing to sustain her, no bag, no money, no clothes and not even her phone. If it had been my daughter the alarm bells would have been ringing by midnight on the 18th.
