Rowley Regis murder: Man found dead at industrial estate named as father-of-five Carl Woodall

A man whose death at a Sandwell industrial estate sparked a murder inquiry has been named as father-of-five Carl Woodall.

Mr Woodall, aged 44, was found dead at around 4.50pm on Monday, June 28, at a unit in Doulton Road.

His family today paid tribute to him in a statement, saying: "Life as we knew it changed when Carl was senselessly killed.

“The loss is hard to bear and we continue to work to come to terms with him being lost to us in such an unforgiveable manner.

“He leaves behind five children who now face a future without a loving father.

"Quiet and unassuming by nature this is a tremendous loss to us and the friends around him.”

A post-mortem examination, which was carried out on Wednesday, showed Mr Woodall died from multiple injuries.

A forensics tent was put up next to a blue Subaru Impreza in the corner of the industrial estate and a number of police vehicles, forensics and an ambulance were at the scene on Monday. While a blue tarpaulin had been put up on a caravan on Tuesday.

A man has denied murdering a father-of-five who was found dead at a Black Country industrial unit.

Mark Campbell pleaded not guilty to killing Carl Woodall when he appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The 39-year-old, who appeared via video link, denied the single charge at his plea and trial preparation hearing on Tuesday (October 20).

It comes after two further men also denied murdering Mr Woodall, 44, when they appeared at the court last month.

Campbell will face a four-week trial alongside Simmion Goldbourne, 28, and James McGhee, 27, next year.

Judge Michael Chambers QC said: "Your case is being adjourned for trial. At the moment, the likely trial date is April 26."

(27th May 2022)

Three men have been jailed for their part in the death of a man who was stripped naked and beaten to death in an industrial estate.

Mark Campbell, Simmion Goldbourne and James McGhee were jailed today at Wolverhampton Crown Court for inflicting fatal injuries on Carl Woodall, 44, in Rowley Regis, West Midlands in the early hours of 28 June last year.

Mark Campbell, 40, and Simmion Goldbourne, 28 were both sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 36 years each.

James McGhee, 28, received a sentence of 15 years' imprisonment for manslaughter.

The judge said the victim had been subjected to "unimaginable horror" and "tortured" in the sustained attack which lasted about two hours and involved the use of a machete, two knives, and a sledgehammer.

Mr Justice Jacobs said: "All three of you gave evidence that you had no idea that anyone would actually be living at the premises where the drugs and money were to be found, and that this was no more than a burglary of unoccupied industrial premises.

"I am sure that all of that evidence was untrue."

Sitting at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Mr Justice Jacobs said: "Your previous friendship with Carl Woodall’s stepson had resulted, a few days earlier, in your meeting Carl Woodall by his home on the estate and seeing his storage unit. You Campbell believed that Mr Woodall stored substantial quantities of drugs and drug money there for the benefit of his stepsons.

"You also believed that this would be an easy job. You could surprise Mr Woodall at night, and a degree of violence would then persuade him without too much difficulty to lead you to the drugs and drug money."

Just days before the violent murder, Campbell 'organised' to rob the storage unit next to a caravan which Mr Woodall lived in at the Rowley Regis site. He shared his plan with 'willing participant' Goldbourne who then recruited his friend McGhee to act as a driver and lookout.

There was never any evidence Mr Woodall was hiding drugs and any ill-gotten gains at his unit but the court heard how the trio split £8,000 blood money between them. Mr Justice Jacobs said: "There is no evidence that this money represented drug money, rather than Mr Woodall’s personal savings - he did not have a bank account.

Lots more detail at the last link, including enough about the injuries to make 36 years seem low; they were really horrific. McGhee was the getaway driver, hence the lesser conviction, I guess it wasn't proved that he directly participated in the attack.
